To season my food before tasting it?

Shutupanddrive · 28/10/2012 16:26

I put salt and black pepper on almost everything I eat. I don't put it in cooking so dc's don't get salt in their food but like it on mine.

Would you be offended if someone came for a meal at your house and did this? Dp says its rude (he never put salt on anything, whereas I think I'm addicted to it!)

I don't put salt on food but have blackpepper on everything.
I love it.

WorraLiberty · 28/10/2012 16:29

I always season before eating if I know the person who cooked it didn't add any salt.

It seems lots of people, even restaurants would rather cook bland tasteless food than add a bit of salt whilst cooking.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 28/10/2012 16:29

Some people get so offended about this I have found in my years on mumsnet.

I don't care. You would have to be incredibly precious if you got worked up at someone putting salt on their own food. Some people like things salty. It's not a crime.

I am the same re black pepper.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 28/10/2012 16:30

So many people do cook without salt. I don't like saltless food.

makinglemonade · 28/10/2012 16:31

Oh I hate when people season before tasting. DH does it with everything and it gets my goat!
I add seasoning when cooking and very rarely add salt or pepper afterwards.

How can you know what it needs without tasting it!

NettoSpookerstar · 28/10/2012 16:32

Nah, go for it.
Some people really are precious about food. I love it and love cooking but if I'm cooking for others, I just want them to enjoy it, and if that means them adding salt and pepper, so be it.

Mrsrobertduvallsaysboo · 28/10/2012 16:32

I just know everything needs black pepper Grin

NettoSpookerstar · 28/10/2012 16:33

Saying that, if I haven't cooked it, I taste first, so I know how much seasoning I feel it needs.

I do cook with salt now, but didn't when DD was little.

maybenow · 28/10/2012 16:34

depends on whether it's something that you'd expect to be seasoned during cooking like stew, soup or rissotto.. then i'd taste first.

but we all know what chips, boiled eggs and baked potatoes taste like and whether we prefer them with salt.

Icelollycraving · 28/10/2012 16:37

I put salt on our food before eating it. Both dh & I like it. My family don't use salt & whenever we eat with them I either ask for salt & get a 'lighthearted' lecture on the evils of salt or just not bother.
I do understand it is considered rude to add before tasting but I do wonder if it's more rude to add once you have tasted!

We had a Chinese takeaway while we were on holiday recently (self catering). I had to abandon it and go out again for salt from the shop, I just couldn't eat it!

Purple2012 · 28/10/2012 16:39

i love salt, and would put it on most things

mutny · 28/10/2012 16:43

It wouldn't bother me. If other people have cooked I would check first I case they have seasoned it.
But if you were trying to follow the rules of etiquette it would be considered rude. As though you assume it needs it.
But I don't know anyone who worrys about this sort of thong.

LadyEvilBeagle · 28/10/2012 16:44

I eat too much salt Blush
If I eat out though, I do taste first but nearly always have to add salt.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 28/10/2012 16:48

I like not having heart issues so I don't eat salt.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 28/10/2012 16:56

I eat too much salt. My mum tells me it will be the death of me.

I put salt on everything. I don't try anything without it. It's just a habit I have now.

I don't like gravy which gets more of a reaction then a me using salt

SecretNutellaFix · 28/10/2012 16:59

Yes, I would find it very insulting.

If I have gone to the time and trouble of cooking a meal, please taste it before piling on extra salt and pepper. Some friends of mine didn't taste once, salted their food and couldn't eat it as they had made it too salty.

So now, I don't bother.

nooka · 28/10/2012 17:11

I don't usually put salt and pepper on the table so I would be somewhat surprised if you attempted this at my house (you'd have to get the cooking salt and pepper from beside the stove).

If you feel such a strong need to add salt to takeaway Chinese food I suspect that you probably have somewhat skewed taste buds, and you might want to get your blood pressure levels checked.

Having said that dh went through a stage of refusing to eat any seasoned food and it was awful. I don't think that adding salt and pepper afterwards has the same effect as seasoning during cooking in any case. A little bit of seasoning at he right time adds more flavour than a pile of salt at the end.

GhostShip · 28/10/2012 17:13

I only realised it was rude because of Come Dine With Me!

I don't like eating without salt (except takeaways and spicy things) so yeah I season without trying first.

GhostShip · 28/10/2012 17:14

I used to actually have salt on toast until I realised what an utterly disgusting habit it was.

LadyEvilBeagle · 28/10/2012 17:18

If I'm cooking for people I'll always put salt and pepper on the table, it's polite.
It's rude to force your tasted on other people.

Petsinmyputridpudenda · 28/10/2012 17:18

I don't cook with salt (health problems) but I have no problem if guests put loads on, I get it's a personal taste thing so I do tell peole I haven't added any.

Dh puts on loads of pepper, the topof the meal is black!
