To season my food before tasting it?

Shutupanddrive · 28/10/2012 16:26

I put salt and black pepper on almost everything I eat. I don't put it in cooking so dc's don't get salt in their food but like it on mine.

Would you be offended if someone came for a meal at your house and did this? Dp says its rude (he never put salt on anything, whereas I think I'm addicted to it!)

This is such a rude thing to do, I think it was hammered into me as my mum was a chef. But if you are eating food that someone else has cooked for you and you season without tasting, you are just insulting that person and their cooking and basically saying that their food is bland and tasteless, without even trying it.
If someone did this to me, I would be so mad. I dont care if you eat loads of salt or pepper thats fine but taste the food first. I also use a lot of seasoning, blending of herbs etc but you wont know that unless you taste it first.

I went to the doctors the other day, he said there's a potentially a problem with my heart... have to have an ECG next week.

I wonder if the salt has anything to do with it, because I'm only 21. Blood pressure is fine though.

I can understand your point, but thats not it at all. You can't assume this is what people are thinking. I add salt because I love the taste of it ALONG WITH the other flavours.

NathanDetroit · 28/10/2012 17:25

I think it's a bit rude and a bit weird. My DP generally adds black pepper to some meals before he eats them which one day I am going to catch him out on! I wouldn't salt something without tasting it unless I was really in a mood for salt, which I rarely am. I try not to eat too much of it as it's so much food already. Saying that, I rarely eat pre-prepared food or crisps anyway so I could probably do with eating a bit more!

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 28/10/2012 17:28

It is considered rude, yes. But if you were eating with me I wouldn't even notice! Though if you were at my house you'd have to ask for it as it's in the cupboard and I wouldn't even think about getting it out (excpet for certain friends who I know will want it). Then I don't spend hours fussing over food for guests, so not really much to be offended over Grin

I'm a bit worried that you feel the need to put salt on a chinese takeaway though - it does show the level of 'saltiness' you 'need' on your meals so you must be ingesting an awful lot of it and it's really not good for you.

VirginiaDare · 28/10/2012 17:28

If you have cooked without any salt or pepper your food is bland and tasteless.

Salt actually opens your tastebuds to allow you to taste more flavour.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 28/10/2012 17:29

Ghostship sorry to hear that... I hope it's all OK x Though you might have to give up your salt habit :( You really do get used to less salt after a while.

MrsCantSayAnything · 28/10/2012 17:30

I get that you like salt...I do too....but some food has plenty in already and you don't need more. YABU to not taste first and probably unhealthy too.

BellaVita · 28/10/2012 17:30

What annoys me about this is.. My brother ALWAYS asks for salt WITHOUT tasting my food first. He puts loads of salt all over it. Now I think THAT is rude.

I season whatever I am cooking, am not precious about putting salt into food or using it once it is cooked, but for god sake, taste I first!

Pi1978 · 28/10/2012 17:32

Surely it's ruder to season after tasting? If seasoning before tasting implies that you are assuming it will be bland and tasteless, then seasoning after must imply that it is bland and tasteless.

GhostShip · 28/10/2012 17:33

Thanks chipping I'm sure it will be! And defo will be stopping it, it's got to the point where I'm adding it sneakily when I'm at work because people look at me, mortified. Need to stop

IneedAsockamnesty · 28/10/2012 17:33

i would concider it rude unless its something like chips or eggs.

i dont think its rude to add after tasting but doing so without tasting winds me up.

sorry to hear that ghost ship, hope all goes well.
I love the taste of salt also in some things, it does make me snurk though when DP overadds as he hasnt tried it first :P

Flojo1979 · 28/10/2012 17:36

Yes my ex used to drown his food in salt before tasting it and it used to piss me off no end maybe thats why he left

halloweeneyqueeney · 28/10/2012 17:37

knowing how rude it is considered and how it makes people never want to bother cooking you anything but chips every again, is it really that hard to take ONE BITE to taste before adding the salt?

DontmindifIdo · 28/10/2012 17:39

Actually it is rude to salt without tasting first when someone else has cooked, also, normally if cooking for grown ups you add salt in cooking, you could end up with over salted food so you cant taste the other flavours...

I would try to get in the habit of tasting first when eating food someone else has cooked, even if you know you'll add salt after the first mouthful, it's best to have one mouthful of unsalted food than offend your host.

DontmindifIdo · 28/10/2012 17:44

actually thinking about it, do you think we're raising a load of DCs who'll be less salt addicted as adults? My parents thought nothing of adding salt to our food when cooking and then adding again if wanted it, where as my DS has low salt everything and DH & I add salt to our meals (wouldn't dream of letting DS have salt added). I wonder if they are just not going to get the taste for it to the same levels...

Rhiana1979 · 28/10/2012 17:47

I add salt when cooking, I never add extra salt to my food once it's on my plate. I don't even have salt on chips. My local chippy always gives me strange looks when I decline salt and vinegar.

I would rather someone taste my food and then decide they would like extra salt than just adding it. What if I'd over salted it in cooking?

GrumpyOldWomanToo · 28/10/2012 17:50

If you really like black pepper, try this chocolate and black pepper ice cream. www.davidlebovitz.com/2008/11/milk-chocolate-and-black-pepper/

I personally don't put salt or pepper on anything. Well, maybe a little on eggs. I think that people have become so accustomed to seasoning that they really don't know what food tastes like. So there.

Butkin · 28/10/2012 17:53

If food is naturally salty ie contains ingredients like bacon, ham etc why would you not taste it first before adding salt.

Whilst I understand that i eat salt in meals prepared by others and in processed foods like crisps etc I don't add salt to anything. It is so harmful to your health that I'd rather go without. I do love pepper though and there are other seasonings like herbs, chilis etc.

Binkyridesagain · 28/10/2012 17:55

There are only 2 times I use salt, on Boxing Day on my turkey sandwich and on a tomato sandwich, when tomatoes are in season.
I don't cook with it and the only person to ask for some to put on their meal was SIL, who is a salt addict, and that was for her chips.

marriedinwhite · 28/10/2012 17:55

If you don't taste the food first, how do you know how much salt and pepper to add? I would find it rude if you were my guest and why would there be an issue about taking one mouthful first before you decided to add extra seasoning? Would you add salt to bacon, or to a ham joint or cod baked in a salt crust?

TheBigJessie · 28/10/2012 18:13

I thought that this would be a reverse AIBU!

Adding salt/pepper/mustard/vinegar etc to your taste is fine as long as you try the food first.

StuntGirl · 28/10/2012 19:33

I have a friend who drowns everything she eats in tomato ketchup. Lasagne, bolognaise, cannelloni, pasta bake, pizza...everything I've ever cooked her ends up covered in the stuff.
