To season my food before tasting it?

I put salt and black pepper on almost everything I eat. I don't put it in cooking so dc's don't get salt in their food but like it on mine.

Would you be offended if someone came for a meal at your house and did this? Dp says its rude (he never put salt on anything, whereas I think I'm addicted to it!)

I didn't realise this was rude until I was about 24. I was at a family meal and part of it was mashed potato. I rarely use salt but love a sprinkle on top of mash. My uncle's mother went up the wall (she was not the cook btw). She went on and on and on throughout the entire meal about how rude I'd been. It was awful.

Stuntgirl one of DP's dear old school friends is like this, he turns up once in a while on his way back from meetings in London, drags DP out for a pint and then has fish and chips/chinese/indian/kebab/whichever takeaway had the shortest queue on the way home and gets through half a family size bottle of ketchup, every single time.

I read somewhere that professional cooks often over season their own portions of food because they spend so much time tasting that their taste-sense gets blunted.

And I have been offended when a guest put salt all over his food before eating a mouthful. And laughed when he admitted weeks later that it had been a bit too salty by the time he'd finished!

Thanks for replies, I know I eat too much salt and I really need to cut down. Is that lo-salt any good? In replies to people asking if I salt bacon etc, no I'm a vegetarian so don't eat anything like that. I do seem to be putting more and more salt on these days though on literally everything, not good Sad

I would be offended if someone put ketchup all over food that I had cooked so I can see why some people would have the same issue with salt. Has anyone gone cold turkey?

Another salt addict here. Too much on everything :/

DontmindifIdo · 28/10/2012 20:37

I would start with making yourself eat the first half of any meal without salt, hopefully you'll start getting used to the taste of stuff rather than just the taste of salt.

It's not good for you, yes you need a little for your joints, but it's in cheese, bread, stock cubes, soya sauce etc, you probably have enough salt from your normal food anyway.

valiumredhead · 28/10/2012 21:16

I don't care what anyone does with their own plate food - salt or not is none of my beeswax!

Wandawingsthe2nd · 28/10/2012 21:23

Can I ask, those that salt everything in extremes, are you smokers? I only ask as my mum is a smoker and has food as a side dish to her salt.

Disclaimer - I am not smoke or salt bashing!

PickledFanjoCat · 28/10/2012 21:24

I love salt. Lash it all over everything.

sashh · 29/10/2012 06:21

I have a friend who does this. When she comes for a propper sit down meal with the posh table cloth and everything I put the salt and pepper grinders on the table and then put the cooking salt on her place setting.

Shutupanddrive · 29/10/2012 06:30

wandawings no I don't smoke Smile

If you have lots of salt, you can get desensitized to it. It happens to chefs. I have had dishes in good restaurants that have been so over salted they were inedible to me.

I add very little salt when cooking, so I wouldn't be offended if someone asked for the salt, but it's generally considered rude to salt food without tasting it first.
