Is there any downside to this?

I read that it's very normal in Scandanavia and it seemed very healthy to me. She's 11 months and is wrapped up very well. Normally in a weather proof all in one then her foot muff etc. Warm hat.

She's outside for I suppose 1 hour twice a day. Sometimes on a walk or just out the back.

Now that the weather is getting cold is there any downside? Anything I haven't thought about?

i have done it with mine as well, especially if they fall asleep when out on a walk, i just park the from out in the front garden adn leave the door open so i can hear them if htey wake. if it rains they have the raincover on, they are always well wrapped up. i have done it from when they are tiny babies, checking on them occasionally.

i wasnt going to start bumping the pram up the step into the house as they would always wake up, i still do ti with dd now at 22mths.

My nanna told me about putting them outside my ds slept like a log bless him!

MrsKeithRichards · 29/10/2012 13:34

Inspired by this I put my baby out today. I've not done it much with ds2, only really if he's been sleepin on way back from walk.

Anyway, he went over with no fuss at 12 and is still sleeping!

This is the box who takes 20 minutes at best in his cot during the day!

valiumredhead · 29/10/2012 13:35

Nice one! Grin

Whatwhatwhat · 29/10/2012 13:57

That's great. It really seems to work for some babies alright

Until DS was around 18m, he would ONLY nap in a moving pram or car. So every day twice a day, rain, shine or snow we walked him in the pram and he never came to any harm - cant see any difference if you have a baby that will calmly nap in a stationary pram in the garden :)

RobinSparkles · 29/10/2012 14:28

Does anyone remember the Channel 4 program, that was on a few years ago, called "Bringing Up Baby"?

There was a childcare "expert" on there called Claire Verity who used the Truby King method of child care.

This thread has just reminded me because she used to put the babies outside to nap.

MrsKeithRichards · 29/10/2012 14:30

He slept for just shy of 2 hours (he's 6m) which is a record! He will sleep for as long as that curled up on me but sometimes I'd like to, you know, get off the sofa!

Longdistance · 29/10/2012 14:49

I couldn't leave my dd's outside, as there were foxes living in the back garden of the neighbours that backed ours.

My inlaws used to do it to my dh, and sil's.

Abra1d · 29/10/2012 15:58

I remember that programme. I didn't agree with all of CV's approaches, but fresh air is a good thing for babies.

mummytowillow · 29/10/2012 19:14

A midwife of 32 years told me to wrap my daughter up and put her in her pram in the garden every day apart from rainy days.

I used to get loads done as she would sleep for ages! Wink

MissCoffeeNWine · 29/10/2012 20:22

I feel inspired to put the baby outside now. I have an enclosed garden out back I can see from the window. Would it be weird to do it with a chair or crib though because I don't have a pram?

ivykaty44 · 29/10/2012 20:32

I wouldn't be happy with a chair or crib - as they are not enclosed to the elements like a pram is.

MissCoffeeNWine · 29/10/2012 20:42

Oh really that's a shame. What is it about a pram that makes it different? It would be weird to buy one just for this wouldn't it!

ivykaty44 · 29/10/2012 21:11

what do you take your baby out in if you go shopping or for a walk?

A pram has a hood, sides and is weather proof - whereas a chair is open to the elements like a crib would be - plus they would be on the ground rather than higher up like a pram on wheels

Pudgy2011 · 29/10/2012 21:17

It works in warm weather as well, I take DS to the beach to get him off to sleep and sleeps like a log on a sunbed (in the shade of course) - it's the breeze that he likes I think. Fresh air is wonderful for helping them go off!

Whatwhatwhat · 29/10/2012 21:18

My lady is in a city mini gt. I call it a pram but maybe buggy is more appropriate. Is that what you mean by a chair? With a footmuff etc it's perfect I think.

I do it :) DD looks like she is snuggled in a little nest in there :) I feel quite jealous most often.

McHappyPants2012 · 29/10/2012 21:28

I would be to nervous

MissCoffeeNWine · 29/10/2012 21:43

We only use a sling when out so just have a bouncy chair which I agree is a bit low. Do you think a moses basket would work or still too flimsy?

Whatwhatwhat · 29/10/2012 21:47

I wonder would a bouncy chair be too cold and not sure about a Moses basket cause they're so open weave.

I do this all the time. In secure back garden, suitably dressed etc. they seem to love it and both sleep better. I park the pram just outside the window so it's easy to check.
Personally I LOVE sleeping outside! Love being all snuggled up in a sleeping bag. Or, pre kids, I used to come home from work on sunny evenings and snooze on my hammock, bliss!

fluffie · 29/10/2012 22:03

I always used to do this when my boys were babies, however, DS2 got sunburn on his face in early March when he was about 7 months! It was awful, we'd been for a walk on a lovely cold but sunny day, got home, DS2 was fast asleep, so I left the pram on the doorstep - I even turned the pram towards the sun in case he was too cold!! I felt awful,Sad took him straight into the GP ( who was lovely about it, just made me cry even more!!) all was fine in the end, still felt like the worlds worst mother!
Still left them to kip in the pram outside tho but was fanatical about keeping it in the shade.

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/10/2012 22:08

you mean your babies are not attached to you by sling 24/7. Shame on you.

MissCoffeeNWine · 29/10/2012 22:21

what a strange thing to say Funnys [hconfused]
