To put my baby outside for naps.

Is there any downside to this?

I read that it's very normal in Scandanavia and it seemed very healthy to me. She's 11 months and is wrapped up very well. Normally in a weather proof all in one then her foot muff etc. Warm hat.

She's outside for I suppose 1 hour twice a day. Sometimes on a walk or just out the back.

Now that the weather is getting cold is there any downside? Anything I haven't thought about?

I don't know how I'd reconcile it with FSIDS advice about having the baby in the same room as you for naps - don't think I'd be willing to sit in the garden with him!

Iggly · 28/10/2012 18:52

11 months is old enough to be alone for naps?

cheesesarnie · 28/10/2012 18:57

no downsides.
mine all liked to nap next to an open window.

MistressIggi · 28/10/2012 19:25

Iggly - yes of course Grin
I'm betting hardened outdoor nappers start early though!
Does it matter where you are in the country though, or do you just layer up for a Scottish baby and down for a Cornish one?

Whatwhatwhat · 28/10/2012 19:39

She's on the other side of the patio door!!

My house is tiny. No question of me being in the East Wing.

gosh I'd hate to snooze outside.

waltermittymissus · 28/10/2012 19:41

Very common here years ago. Don't really know why it died out...nothing wrong with it at all! :)

MistressIggi · 28/10/2012 20:03

Can I be the first to mention the cats with murderous intent??

ThePathanKhansWitch · 28/10/2012 20:11

I did, but not on foggy weather, my mum say,s its bad for their chest.I have no idea of that's true.

pigletmania · 28/10/2012 20:12

I just couldn't sit in my nice warm and cozy house and my baby outside in the freezing cold. I personally hate to sleep in te cold outside, ephyrae would a baby Hmm. I can see it if te weather is fine, but not in this horrid cold weather

CassandraApprentice · 28/10/2012 20:19

"but my DD tells me quite a few of her peers as new mums wouldn't leave the house with the baby for about 4-6 week! I don't know what they thought would happen! "

Probably had the HV I had - one who came after first DC was born. She basily told me that - I had to ignore to get supplies from the shop and after speaking to a friend risked groups l-ike new parents groups -as well.

I use to have to walk outside with eldest Dc in a moving pushchair. Getting her inside could be a problem so in good wether I'd put her directly by an open back door and potter in the kitchen. Did same with second DC by time of thrid we has new house and she could be left in the garage.

MIL use to leave DH ouside in their garden - which doesn't sound to bad till your told garden was no where near the infilling house and she couldn't see or hear him. Neighbours could and used to tell her not to do it - but she thought it was great as she could get house work done.

JudeFawley · 28/10/2012 20:23

I can understand doing it in the summer, but in cold weather, it seems odd to me.

Sabriel · 28/10/2012 20:24

StepAwayfromtheEcclesCakes sure she exaggerates it a bit else it would be cruel. They did do that, and it was cruel :( My mum left me at the end of the garden, or shut in a room, so they couldn't hear me cry, because they had to wait 4 hours between feeds.

Mum was desperate to put my babies out in the garden but unless it was summertime they stayed indoors.

hopenglory · 28/10/2012 20:31

Yes, I did it. Outside under the tree in the summer so it was nice and cool, and snuggled up warm in the winter. We all sleep with the windows open, even in the middle of the winter

surroundedbyblondes · 28/10/2012 20:39

We're in Sweden and indeed, babies sleep outdoors. Decent outdoor clothing (for all ages) is a big investment each winter but well worth it. We spend a great deal of time outside.
With DD2 it depends what we're doing as to where she sleeps, but she has certainly slept happily outdoors in both rain and minus temperatures.
It was particularly useful when DD1 needed collecting from pre-school during DD2's nap time. We would take a walk, DD2 would continue sleeping in the garden and I would just walk with the buggy to go get DD1. Simples Smile

pigletmania · 28/10/2012 20:42

I just couldn't do it, it's a bit out of sight out of mind kind of thing

ScabbyColdCrustyCatPuss · 28/10/2012 20:52

Ive done that. They always slept really well. I love sleeping outside. When I am ill, I always prefer being outside, I can just

ScabbyColdCrustyCatPuss · 28/10/2012 20:52

breathe easier.

Abra1d · 28/10/2012 20:54

Both my two had naps outside. And we had long walks with the dogs every single day, unless the weather was vile. I think they need fresh air to help them sleep at night, too.

But, i agree about fog. My son caught pneumonia after going out in the fog for a walk with me. He had had a very mild cold a few days previously, insignificant, really, we had thought. Following pneumonia he caught bronchiolitis.

CaurnieBred · 28/10/2012 21:13

I did this with DD - I followed the "She who must not be named" routine, but all DD's naps were in her pram outside rather than the prescribed dark bedroom. If the weather was really bad then she would be in the garage with the door to the back garden left open rather than in the actual garden itself. We did this until she was around 2/2.5 and starting to get a bit big for the buggy.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 28/10/2012 22:29

I will try this. DS (5 weeks) is very poor sleeper. Having said that, he'll fall asleep in his pram but wake up about 10 minutes after entering the house.

MistressIggi · 28/10/2012 22:37

At only 5 weeks he's not meant to be a great sleeper! Please don't leave your tiny baby on his own outside.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/10/2012 22:45

This is very interesting! Never knew babies slept better outside!

ivykaty44 · 28/10/2012 22:55

Carshalton hospital used to put the children from the ward outside to sleep at night if they were naughty Grin

I used to walk both of mine in the pram dd1 more so than dd2, but dd2 was placed in the garden to sleep most days. They both slept well at night and I am sure it was the fresh air in the day.

CH is not good for any person for sleeping, so a warm house in the day is not a good place to be sleeping. Though neither is foggy or damp air good for sleeping and as babies breath much more quickly than adults they would take more air in and its not good - same with smoke they breath quciker and take in more polutants
