To be sick of people on FB selling old shite in the name of handcrafted "gifts"

Is it just me or is everyone trying to become the next Cath bloody Kidston or Martha Stewart?

MULTIPLE people on my FB seem to be flogging their old tat that they've knocked up whilst on maternity leave or during their lunch breaks!

One friend is selling "Fabulous teacup gift sets" which consist of a charity shop teacup and saucer, filled with Ferero Rocher and wrapped in clear plastic for a tenner!

Another does "Adorable Baby hair bands for your little princess" consisting of a fabric flower tacked onto a pound-shop hairband....6 quid thank you very much!

I've seen multiple badly painted wooden letters (un-sanded) with little bows and shit stuck on "£3 per letter" if you please.

Like people can't make this stuff themselves!?

Really? I'm ALL for selling crafts but have these people no shame? Or no judgement? Or am I a caaah?

ghostship I think....I think that Cognito didn't realise that the maker of the bags was on thread...but that someone had linked to some random bags.

Your bags aren't shit imo. I bet she's blushing now if she realises!

GhostShip · 29/10/2012 20:49

Thankyou

I don't mind her having an opinion at all, just constructive please ;)

GhostShip · 29/10/2012 20:49

Butterfly I like that stuff!

You may get a message from mumsnet though, we're not allowed to link our stuff (even if its on topic) x

bumperella · 29/10/2012 22:26

Being sold anything by freinds/acquantances is toe-curlingly awful. In that regard YANBU.

MrsCantSayAnything · 29/10/2012 22:46

butterfly your things are beauteous. I like the blossom earrings a lot.

bumper that's how I feel! How can I possibly bear to order a crappy delectable item from a mate and pay then a fiver or whatever...it's embarrassing somehow.

Just seen the comments about nappy cakes. What's wrong with them? Is it the whole nappy cake thing or just the badly done ones
This is a snap of one I did (not a site selling it just a picture)
img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/vikkilouise/nappycakebespoke.jpg
Which had this in it img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/vikkilouise/nappycakebespokeingredients.jpg

Anti nappy cakes or anti some nappy cakes?

MaureenLove · 30/10/2012 07:32

They're fucking stupid

MaureenLove · 30/10/2012 07:33

Yup I am. They GOP the bags. EW pink shite

MaureenLove · 30/10/2012 07:35

Lol at the flowers. Guys. Take a deep long hard look into your souls. Is this what you've become ?!

MrsCantSayAnything · 30/10/2012 08:09

picture I don't mean to be...mean! Some people love nappy cakes whilst others feel it's silly to spend more money on items just because they've been folded into a special shape.

Can someone pm me a link to the bags too please?

TheDeathAndGories · 31/10/2012 14:34

Goodness
I can see why you have to pay for advertising on mn it really does work. I'm glad it's boosted sales for my friend because she is fab though anyone I see now with a not a gruffalo child I will automatically suspect is an mner

nickeldaisical · 31/10/2012 15:00

i was given a nappy cake.
i thought it was really cute.
and had useful stuff in it.
apart from the nappies - there were 2 sizes - we used the small ones but never used the bigger ones because we went cloth after a fortnight.
would have made more sense for all the nappies to have been small.

You've got to be a bit dim to fall for that fridge or new to vintage stuff. I remember buying a 50s style wiicker bag from primark and a week later someone listed the same one as Vintage on Ebay.

It looked vintage to the untrained eye. I reported her but they left it on!

There's a woman selling the painted jute bags in my extended circle of friends. She charges about £20. Now I am sorry, but there is no way that the material and labour come to £20. The bags are about £2 in hobbycraft (I've bought some for the kids to make bags for grandma. God help the poor woman, they're not the most artistic of souls:o )and it doesn't take three hours to copy an identikit drawing of a bobblehead on the side and scrawl a name up the side. She is just being greedy!

MrsCantSayAnything · 01/11/2012 16:48

Does she shift any Spooky?

I spat my tea out when the pic of that hideous wooden bird thing loaded! £30!! pmsl

SpectralMissSpooky · 01/11/2012 17:43

She seems to have a lot of people twittering on about them, but ice non idea if anyone is stupid enough to buy them at that price!

MrsCantSayAnything · 03/11/2012 20:13

I saw a kid today in Liverpool with one of those handpainted bags!

It said "ELLIE" in purple glitter and had one of those generic large headed girls painted on it. It was quite cute actually.

SpectralMissSpooky

£20 is about fair actually. Bags, £2/3. Postage £3ish, the paint is expensive, then there's the bits that get stuck on ours including ribbon, diamantes, bits like butterflies and stars, the brand logos are quite expensive too.
And it can take 2+ hours for each bag. It looks a lot easier than it actually is. We thought it would be wayyy easier but it turns out the drawing and painting stage is quite hard on the jute bags, then you have to wait for it to dry. Then stick accessories on, the diamante names are pain staking if the names are long. Then you've got paypal fees, packaging fees. AND then there's the time you've took to communicate with customers, sometimes it's like blood out of a stone.

I would have probably thought the same as you had I not tried it for myself.

The profit margins are small.

SpectralMissSpooky · 03/11/2012 22:02

These ones are unadorned, paint + bag, and from what I've seen she just makes and sells locally. I'm sure there are lovely examples, but the ones that float past on my feed aren't >_< :o

MrsReiver · 03/11/2012 22:08

That's for the small one, the "enormous" one is a bargain at £170!
