To be sick of people on FB selling old shite in the name of handcrafted "gifts"

MrsCantSayAnything · 27/10/2012 23:01

Is it just me or is everyone trying to become the next Cath bloody Kidston or Martha Stewart?

MULTIPLE people on my FB seem to be flogging their old tat that they've knocked up whilst on maternity leave or during their lunch breaks!

One friend is selling "Fabulous teacup gift sets" which consist of a charity shop teacup and saucer, filled with Ferero Rocher and wrapped in clear plastic for a tenner!

Another does "Adorable Baby hair bands for your little princess" consisting of a fabric flower tacked onto a pound-shop hairband....6 quid thank you very much!

I've seen multiple badly painted wooden letters (un-sanded) with little bows and shit stuck on "£3 per letter" if you please.

Like people can't make this stuff themselves!?

Really? I'm ALL for selling crafts but have these people no shame? Or no judgement? Or am I a caaah?

(disclaimer that is not actually me... welll... )

FiercePanda · 28/10/2012 22:13

Shit the bloody bed.

Those gorillas are the most sinister creatures I have ever seen. I find all those "reborn" dolls a bit icky at the best of times, but gorillas? So you can have a really hairy baby substitute? [hhmm]

Chaoscarriesonagain · 28/10/2012 22:14

Yanbu. I love this thread

OscarPistoriusGirlfriend · 28/10/2012 22:33

So are there any MN crafters who would like a stall at a Xmas fair in Tameside then?

I love the sweetie trees and the babygrow bears.

OldMumsy · 28/10/2012 22:40

They are trying to sell shite and YADNBU not wanting to buy said shite.

MrsCantSayAnything · 28/10/2012 22:46

Oh Oscar Grin

Reborn Pugs? Why???????

BloodyReallyMadmMolar · 28/10/2012 23:06

A lot of people who craft do it not only for the money ,but in the pleasure of making, opinions are welcome but turning a thread rancid with half cocked comments really does set my teeth on edge ,go and hop back into your Chelsea Trackters and toodle off into the sunset,I might start a site for selling Elbow Grease.
I was in the Lanes in Brighton the other day the difference in the shops, produce and styles was amazing ,until I came across a shop selling supposed designs by Girls Aloud( that's girl band that won a some such prize) oh ........dear

expatinscotland · 29/10/2012 00:44

I'm pleased with the stuff I've bought of FB sellers, most of whom come recommended.

I like the quality of GoldShip's bags, too. They look better than some others I've seen for the same money.

If it bothers you, you don't have to buy it. You can hide or restrict or defriend.

expatinscotland · 29/10/2012 00:47

this is where I got the rosettes and they are worth every penny.

Exceptionally well-made and now I've bought a few for bereaved parents and had such positive feedback, my plan is to buy one for every bereaved parent whose child's name I know as a gift for them to remember their child on his/her birthday.

I bought them for my surviving children, too.

SmoothOperandus · 29/10/2012 07:42

BloodyReallyMadmMolar, very well said. Such is the pathetic state of the high street right now...

MrsCantSayAnything · 29/10/2012 08:18

The rosettes are very pretty indeed. I am not denigrating people who make lovely things but people who make utter crap and then flog it all over facebook with no shame.

MrsMangelfanciedPaulRobinson · 29/10/2012 08:27

Hmmmm, I think the teacup set you've described sounds rather nice.

I think YABU. You don't have to buy anything. People are simply making use of FB as a sales and marketing tool, and it seems to be a very effective one at that if some of my friends' businesses are anything to go by.

freddiefrog · 29/10/2012 08:48

I used to have a Facebook business page as I used to make wedding cakes for a living. Well, I still do not as much as I used to

I'm self employed and pay tax, I'm also registered with Environmental Health and fully insured.

So many people now have started up selling cupcakes and don't bother registering or getting insurance as they think it's a cheap way of making a few quid.

MaureenCognito · 29/10/2012 09:00

those bags are vile

MackerelOfFact · 29/10/2012 09:08

YANBU. I have a FB friend who sells sock monkeys. They make me feel a bit queasy. By all means recycle your old socks and make something for your DH, DCs or (preferably) dog, but don't try and sell the disgusting things to your 'friends' for £8! I would be so embarrassed accepting money from a friend for something like that.

I also have the obligatory cupcake sellers, and a maker of beaded jewellery, of the type that might be fashionable in the over-60s.

MrsCantSayAnything · 29/10/2012 09:11

Mackrel I think people buy new socks for the monkeys...cheap ones for a pound or so. They don't recycle them! Grin

mamamibbo · 29/10/2012 09:12

i make sock monkeys out of new socks lol not used ones

EasilyBored · 29/10/2012 09:17

I've got a couple of friends who sell stuff on FB and Folksy/Etsy, but it's decent quality (crayons and some hand sewn stuff). There is a A LOT of shite out there though.

I do love the keepsake bears, but I'm quite good with a sewing machine so do a get a bit 'I could give that a go!' with some things.

ZiggyPlayedGuitar · 29/10/2012 09:18

I have a friend on mine who gets tea cups from charity shops, fills them with candle wax and sells them on for £10 minimum! They don't even smell of anything!

mmmerangue · 29/10/2012 09:18

There are multiple friends on facebook I would happily defriend for the quiet life RE; chocolate candy trees, sock cupcakes (baby socks rolled into rose shapes Hmm ) random badly knitted tat and fake pandora bracelets if I didn't like nosing through their other stuff so much , but there is one or two I am totally in love with.

Example one: You can buy for half the price or GUESS the pattern for these, cute they may be but a rip off! : Sock Monkeys

Example two: A beautiful, unique gift idea that works well through social media and seem to be pretty busy!: Handmade bears from baby's first clothes

expatinscotland · 29/10/2012 09:29

Which bags, Cognito?

MackerelOfFact · 29/10/2012 10:11

Well I stand corrected on sock monkeys, but I still think they're a weird thing to sell. Grin Would rather have the socks TBH!

MrsCantSayAnything · 29/10/2012 10:13

I know Mackerel...I think the thing is that they're SO easy to make that a multitude of people thought "Ooh...my sock monkey looks SO good I'll sell them!"

Even though they are so easy that everyone can make their own anyway!

Oh piss it! One of my friends has started spamming the wall with tag blankets and nappy cakes. I forgot about the woman who makes dreadfully garish giant cupcakes and cakes with a barbie stuck in them! Heeeeelp!

I feel another culling session coming on!
