To be sick of people on FB selling old shite in the name of handcrafted "gifts"

MrsCantSayAnything · 27/10/2012 23:01

Is it just me or is everyone trying to become the next Cath bloody Kidston or Martha Stewart?

MULTIPLE people on my FB seem to be flogging their old tat that they've knocked up whilst on maternity leave or during their lunch breaks!

One friend is selling "Fabulous teacup gift sets" which consist of a charity shop teacup and saucer, filled with Ferero Rocher and wrapped in clear plastic for a tenner!

Another does "Adorable Baby hair bands for your little princess" consisting of a fabric flower tacked onto a pound-shop hairband....6 quid thank you very much!

I've seen multiple badly painted wooden letters (un-sanded) with little bows and shit stuck on "£3 per letter" if you please.

Like people can't make this stuff themselves!?

Really? I'm ALL for selling crafts but have these people no shame? Or no judgement? Or am I a caaah?

Grin loving regretsy!

YANBU. My cousin has started doing this. Her latest creation was a personalised iPhone cover which looked like she'd covered it in glue and chucked it in a bead and novelty plastic bead box. I cringe when I see her 'creations' and even more when I see what she is charging. Hmm

Fair play to her and all that for trying to make some extra money but she does come across as quite arrogant over her 'talent'. She has also started selling other people's creations and unusual baby clothes she has bought from other sellers at an inflated price. What she probably doesn't realise is that any conversations she has with these other sellers show up on my news feed so that you can see what she originally paid for it and moreover where you could just buy it direct yourself Confused.

expatinscotland · 28/10/2012 13:52

I bought some absolutely beautifully made, personalised rosettes from FB.

I bought one each for my surviving childrens' birthdays, and 4 that read, 'Happy Birthday, Aillidh' to our child who is not with us, to give to a friend who is like her mother and my mum and sister and for us to wear them on her birthday.

Also ordered one for a mate who lost her daughter as well, to wear on her birthday. She was really moved.

They are absolutely gorg and very well made.

expatinscotland · 28/10/2012 13:53

I like those bags! Lemme like the page and have a looksy. DD2's birthday is coming up in December. She'll be 7 and those look fab! :)

IDismyname · 28/10/2012 13:55

MrsCants

I love the bit where she says that her 2 year old 'refuses to wear shop bought hair clips'...

I mean WTF??

GhostShip · 28/10/2012 13:59
Thanks
UrsulaBuffay · 28/10/2012 14:00

What annoys me is do any of them pay tax on their income? Thought not.

D0oinMeCleanin · 28/10/2012 14:01

My Dad does wooden, painted sanded letters, they are sanded I know this because I was conned into buying the electric sander for him Hmm

They seem to sell quite well, so clearly someone wants them. My sister paints them for him, she has an art degree and lives and breathes art.

He has now extended into rocking chairs (they seem to sell well) and hand crafted dolls houses. These don't sell well because people believe they are too expensive, so I'm not sure where he is going to sell these. The roof alone on the one he is currently building cost over £60 to make, he was going to sell them for around £200.

GhostShip · 28/10/2012 14:01

I don't think they should have to, a little thing on the side like that

BUT, we have put tax away in a bank account ready to pay.

Whooooosualsuspect · 28/10/2012 14:02

I doubt they earn enough to pay tax.

flamingtoaster · 28/10/2012 14:05

Simply regard them as a great source of presents for people you don't really like but have to give a present to.Grin Even better copy the worst ideas so it doesn't cost much.

mamamibbo · 28/10/2012 14:10

one of my friends was selling personalised buckets... why would you need a personalised bucket?

TheProvincialLady · 28/10/2012 14:16

I get this, but more with cakes than crafts. There are three people on my FB who make vegan cakes. One is amazing, one is ok, and the other one makes things that look and sound absolutely repulsive. I applaud anyone who tries to make a bit of cash for themselves with their talents (I it myself as it happens, only not with making things as I am generally rubbish at that) - but they have to be of a saleable standard and they have to be paying tax on it if they should be and I am sure a lot of people don't.

D0oinMeCleanin · 28/10/2012 14:17

I don't think my Dad makes enough to pay tax, how much would you have to earn before paying tax?

On a good week he can come out with £60 - £80 but this is not all profit, around a third of that covers the cost of materials for his next project, except his dolls house, I pay for the majority of that because he is making it for dd1 for Christmas. These dolls must be sodding millionaires is all I can say Angry

He can go for weeks with only making £10 - £20 a week, again some of this covers the cost of materials, either for his next project or what he owes me for the products he's already sold.

He was utterly pissed off when someone told him they were thinking more along the lines of £50 when he quoted them £180 for a slightly smaller version of the dolls house he is making. Cheeky beggars. It's taken him months to make and cost near to £100 up to now.

TheProvincialLady · 28/10/2012 14:17

mamamibbo a personalised bucket would come in handy if you saw some of these vegan cakes.

TheCraicDealer · 28/10/2012 14:21

To put all your other personalised toot in, obviously Grin

piglettsmummy · 28/10/2012 14:23

This is a little mean! There are some people that sell absolute shite on fb but then the majority are decent! I bought a personalised dummy clip not Long back! Yes I cud have made it myself but I cudnt be arsed and I didn't have the time. Anyone can make a table or curtains if u wanted but do you? No you know why because it's there to be bought. You'll always be paying more for something you buy because you pay for labour!! My gosh tommee tipee charge like 5quid for a dummy clip which probably 1000 other babies will have too! I no someone who personalises accessories for pushchairs it started of as a hobbie but she now has we own shop and it is a
Full time business. I'd love to be able to do stuff like this earn a bit more cash especially as I can't go out to work! And to everyone else that moans about these pages you actually have to like the majority of them! As with selling pages! It's very mean to Join them for 'entertainment?'laughing at someone's attempt to make money is awful! Would you laugh at a disadvantaged kid at school who was shite at art but had dreams of beig an artist? Exactly!.....

TheDeathAndGories · 28/10/2012 14:24

The key is to only have friends who make decent things such as this , this and these

(none of these are mine btw. I have no such talent sadly

peeriebear · 28/10/2012 14:38

I sell the odd thing on Etsy when I get around to making and listing. It's good fun. I'll never make my fortune but when somebody likes what you've made enough to part with cash over the internet, it's good for the old self esteem and makes me feel less of a faceless Mum, more an individual with a bit of talent :)

degutastic · 28/10/2012 15:00

this is awesome Shock Grin

TheDeathAndGories · 28/10/2012 15:03

It is isnt it degu. My ds3 has one and always gets compliments. (it's a monster that looks surprisingly like the guffalo though and not the gruffalo you understand Grin )

MrsCantSayAnything · 28/10/2012 15:09

No no...it's not THE Gruffalo of course! It's Very cute! I have no issue with people making money but I am surprised that people actually buy some of the shit on these pages.

Each to their own eh!

MrsCantSayAnything · 28/10/2012 15:14

Doin maybe your Dad should consider doing small houses? Ones with little rooms? As big as a shoebox say....but with nice detail and painted and papered?

OP posts:
CuriosityKilledTheCrap · 28/10/2012 15:18

There is one on our FB page that sells normal sweets surrounded in crepe paper to look like a bouquet. Hmm It seems everyone loves them and goes nuts for them.

MrsCantSayAnything · 28/10/2012 15:20

Oh we have one of those too Curiosity ours makes "trees" out of Quality Street...and now it's Halloween she does "Eyeball Trees" etc.

Terrible looking things...some of them are made of sweets with no wrappers so you know she's mauled them all whilst jabbing them onto cocktail sticks.
