To think dishwashers are a waste of money and don;t save you that much time/work?

We've just moved into a new house with a dishwasher which I used for the first time today.

The cycle took about an hour and the dishes were no cleaner than if I had washed them myself. It took a while to load/unload, meant we had dirty dishes hanging around in it until it was full, and some of the cups had silt in them after the wash, also ou can't wash pots and pans in there.

It takes me on average about 5 minutes to do the dishes by hand,

AIBU to think dishwashers are an expensive waste of time?

Baumatic is an excellent make, clean the filter and run it once with tablet and squirt of lemon juice on hot cycle without any dishes in it, I am sure all it needs is a good clean.

garlicbaguette · 29/10/2012 00:45

Agreed. Don't know if this is still the case, but Baumatic were manufacturers for Bosch.

HopingItllBeOK · 29/10/2012 01:05

Since this seems to be the home of the dishwashers experts, perhaps someone can help me?

I absolutely adore mine, it was a condition of my moving in with DP when expecting our DS as that would make us a family of 5 and I was buggered if I was going to hand wash that much, but... We use a fair amount of Ikea kids cups and bowls over the course of a day and at least 40% of the time they get tipped over during the cycle and get water and silt in them. If I just tip it out, they dry with manly white marks inside so need hand washing.

Where am I going wrong with my dishwasher stacking technique? I have tried putting them on the bottom shelf upside down and right side up, top shelf between the cup racks and top shelf wedged underneath the pulled down wine glass holder so they can't ping up and flip. It makes no difference to how often they spin and flip.

I know it isn't hard to hand wash a bit of plastic but I am immensely lazy and frankly, I have better things to do than stand in front of a sink for any longer than I have to.

Morloth · 29/10/2012 06:08

I love my dishwasher, if I had to choose between my dishwasher and my husband I would probably choose my husband, but it would be a close race.

I also only book self catering places for holidays if they have a dishwasher, I am not bloody well washing up when on holiday. I take my Nespresso as well on self catering holidays we are driving to.

Quite enjoy stacking it, is a bit like tetris. It is DS1's job to empty it. I have a newish one that has the cutlery drawer on the top. Is fantastic.

Couldn't give a fuck whether it costs more or less or uses more or less water, or even takes more time.

I am NOT washing up.

exoticfruits · 29/10/2012 06:28

My mother always said that but has changed her mind and admitted she was wrong since I have had mine. I am the same on holiday- I won't waste time washing up and always look for a cottage with one.

I need to try the chocolate vodka

cheesesavory · 29/10/2012 12:27

garlic if it makes you feel better we had to spend more than the cost of the dw to buy the correct fittings for the door because it's an integrated one Grin

WitchesTit · 29/10/2012 12:34

Rename it "The Magic Cupboard", you put dirty pots in. Clean ones come out!!

What's not to like? Dp hates doing the washing up but he'll happily stack the dishwasher in the most aesthetically pleasing yet ergonomic and effective way, make sure it's got rinse aid and salt and even wipes the thing down after its through and he's emptied it!

janelikesjam · 29/10/2012 14:51

Its totally and absolutely amazing and when I had one it changed my whole life completely . I do not know honestly how I coped before. I don't know how the rest of the non-dishy-washery world copes tbh, frankly I feel sorry for them ...

Couldn't resist it, sorry

P.S. I had one once, what a waste of time. You even had to wash the dishes before you put them in!

BellaTheGymnast · 29/10/2012 15:11

I want one. It's not fair. Envy

ProbablyDoingTheWrongThing · 29/10/2012 15:20

I've just ordered one, it was a bargain. It's my first and will be beautiful.

here she is, i'm actually looking forward to christmas day now Shock

lubeybooby · 29/10/2012 15:30

lmao at washing dishes before you put them in - er no. Total myth and unnecessary. Who does that? I certainly don't. Just scrape any massive bits off into the bin same as you would when washing by hand.

It was in my wedding vows to my husband that we got a dishwasher :o. I couldnt live without mine.

There used to be 5 people in my house, now down to 4. Still no way, I would wash up. Cleaner and 20 times more hygienic than washing by hand.

The person who said they would rather have a dishwasher than a cooker must be related to me :o

SparePants · 29/10/2012 17:40

I've never had a dishwasher, and when we go on holiday to places with them it always seems like such a bloody faff, and it takes loads longer than washing up in the sink. And aren't those little tabletty things really expensive?

There are some real vehement anti washer-uppers on this thread. Vacuuming, ironing, floor washing I can understand, but washing up? meh.

exoticfruits · 29/10/2012 23:30

You would find it much quicker if you were using it everyday.

Morloth · 30/10/2012 02:51

I don't do any of those either SparePants Wink

I hate housework, except bizarrely putting the washing away, don't mind that.

No rinsing dishes here, just scrape the chunky bits off, the machine takes care of the rest. I don't know how and I don't want to know.

I put the dirty stuff in, I push the buttons, I take the clean stuff out.

Lavenderhoney · 30/10/2012 03:40

Op, maybe your dishwasher needs salt, and the finishing lotion? mine does that either before or after it needs it. Mine comes with the apartment so it's old and only has one setting. it doesn't need rinsing first etc, I do get big chunks off bu that s common sense.

I love my dishwasher. Who invented It? I even pop the kitchen cloths in occasionally if theres a bit of space, plus the sheets from the extractor fan.

It saves time, I am not faced by washing up after bedtimes, and the tabs aren't expensive. It gets things a lot cleaner, I can be with the dc instead of washing up and drying cutlery everywhere.
