To think dishwashers are a waste of money and don;t save you that much time/work?

We've just moved into a new house with a dishwasher which I used for the first time today.

The cycle took about an hour and the dishes were no cleaner than if I had washed them myself. It took a while to load/unload, meant we had dirty dishes hanging around in it until it was full, and some of the cups had silt in them after the wash, also ou can't wash pots and pans in there.

It takes me on average about 5 minutes to do the dishes by hand,

AIBU to think dishwashers are an expensive waste of time?

Mine is bay Aric and is fine - perhaps yours needs cleaning out a bit - I sometimes put one of the cleaner things in it. The cycles are quite long but I don't care. I've had a dishwasher or the last 5 years or so and wouldn't be without one now.

AntiqueTable · 27/10/2012 19:22

Baumatic, not Bay Aric, thanks iPad!

WilsonFrickett · 27/10/2012 19:24

YABSooooU

We don't have one at the mo, for the first time in years and we're going nuts. DH is dreaming about the new one.

oldraver · 27/10/2012 19:26

Give it good clean by running it empty with vinegar or soda crystals, give the filters a good clean and put salt in it.

Some dishwasher tablets say they replace having to use salt but I think if you live in hard water you still need salt and sometimes rinseaid

Mymumsdaughter · 27/10/2012 19:27

Is there any where to learn how to stack I'm always amazed how people get everything in If I could load mine proiper it would be worth it

skaen · 27/10/2012 19:27

YABU. We've rented cottages etc without dishwashers and DH and I are arguing and getting snarky with each other within days. Much easier to put things in as you go, hide the dirty stuff while it waits for a clean and then put it on.

What sort have you got PiggeryJokery? Mine takes about an hour and a half on a normal wash.

TheMummyLovesAScareFest · 27/10/2012 19:29

do you have any/many dcs? no waiting for it to be full here!

Mintyy · 27/10/2012 19:30

Right, so you've used a dishwasher once ...

Do you really do your washing up after a normal meal in 5 minutes? I don't believe that for a nano-second.

LadyEdith · 27/10/2012 19:30

I think that is the most U thing I have ever seen on MN Shock

Meglet · 27/10/2012 19:31

yabu.

Mine is just a cheap one and it nukes all the dirt. If it fits it goes in there.

SCOTCHandWRY · 27/10/2012 19:33

I wouldn't be without one. There are 6 of us so there is no "waiting for enough dishes to fill it", there are enough after every meal. Pots, pans, everything goes in otherwise what would be the point in having one?

MinkSlink · 27/10/2012 19:34

Haha! I am deffo going to give it another go, revise my stacking technique and clean it out, my life may never be the same again, thank you women of mumsnet!

amillionyears I have this one although I got mine 4 years ago so some of the spec may be different now. Not cheap but really worth it.

valiumredhead · 27/10/2012 19:37

Put salt and a cleaner through it - it sounds like it needs a good clean if things are coming out dirty.

I would never be without one now as they keep the kitchen so tidy even if you don't put it on straightway. And they use less energy than washing by hand iirc as they use so little water.

I have never manage dot do the dishes by hand in 5 mins!

Mrsjay · 27/10/2012 19:37

why cant you use pots in it I love my dishwasher more thanmychilden anything Grin

Our dishwasher occasionally doesn't wash well - you need to make sure all the water jets are clear and the filter is clean too.

Can it really take only 5 minutes to wash up? I remember DH standing at the sink one day saying "I want a dishwasher!" as he always had the job of washing up.

I wouldn't be without mine. When the last one exploded it was an emergency dash to the shop to get a new one - they delivered the next day while we wept with gratitude..

When the washing machine blew up it was a minor issue by comparison.

valiumredhead · 27/10/2012 19:38

My brand new fangled Miele (MASSIVE boast!) does a 40 min quick was which is amazing!!!!

Willabywallaby · 27/10/2012 19:38

I have specifically booked our mobile home for holiday next year with a dishwasher, not a holiday if I do more work than at home.

Mrsjay · 27/10/2012 19:39

wash pots* i would love a melle Envy

valiumredhead · 27/10/2012 19:39

The actual washing up isn't the issue for me - it's the having to do it straight away or the kitchen is a tip - having a dishwasher been it's all cleared away and tidy super quick!

picnicbasketcase · 27/10/2012 19:39

I bloody love having a dishwasher and will cry when it finally dies on me because I don't think we can afford another one. The only thing it's no good for is a saucepan that's been used to cook scrambled egg, aka the most stubborn substance on earth.
