To think dishwashers are a waste of money and don;t save you that much time/work?

We've just moved into a new house with a dishwasher which I used for the first time today.

The cycle took about an hour and the dishes were no cleaner than if I had washed them myself. It took a while to load/unload, meant we had dirty dishes hanging around in it until it was full, and some of the cups had silt in them after the wash, also ou can't wash pots and pans in there.

It takes me on average about 5 minutes to do the dishes by hand,

AIBU to think dishwashers are an expensive waste of time?

I used to think this with a vengeance. And then I got one. I was wrong.

theodorakis · 27/10/2012 21:44

They don't run on self righteous dust, try using all in one tablets and even you may convert. Did you also have a 2 year labour without pain relief? It's kinda the same.

KenLeeeeeee · 27/10/2012 21:47

I hate my dishwasher. The one in our old house was amazing and made everything shiny and beautiful. This one is a pile o'shite and even after rigorous cleaning, new salt, dishwasher cleaner run through repeatedly, it STILL doesn't get things properly clean. Hate hate hate it. If I could be bothered, I'd have a bash at nagging the landlord into replacing it.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/10/2012 21:48

YABU. I would literally die without my dishwasher. It's on now, washing the dishes. Everything goes in it whether it should or not. I don't own anything thats not dishwasher proof

Crikeyblimey · 27/10/2012 21:48

Our dishwasher was THE best thing we ever bought!! It is somewhere to stash the dirty pots, while it washes up, I can do other stuff (like drink wine). Baking days and batch cooking is far easier cos I bung all my mess (nasty pans included) in there as I go and switch on when full.

It has been broken for 2 weeks and my mugs are already showing signs of tea stainedness inside them. On hols in Scotland (cottage with dishwasher) and believe me, ours WILL be fixed or replaced as soon as we are home.

LadyFannyJoGarden · 27/10/2012 21:50

YANBU - I think they are an overrated waste of space.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/10/2012 21:52

btw mine is a Smeg, vair good indeed. Nothing comes out dirty or wet. All lovely and clean and dry

BertieBotts · 27/10/2012 22:01

I hate washing up, so the dishwasher is a lifesaver to me Grin

How does it take you 5 minutes? Envy If washing up took me 5 minutes then perhaps I wouldn't mind it so much.

However the 15 minutes six fecking times a day is what gets me. I like to set and forget!

You still have to take dirty stuff to the sink and unload it from the drying rack when you wash up, so I never understand why people moan about loading/unloading when you have to do it anyway! Confused

In fact I think I have the solution: Get two dishwashers, buy just enough cutlery, crockery, pans etc to fill 1.5 dishwashers, and throw away all the rest. Fill one up slowly as things get used. Once this is full, switch on. When clean, use things directly out of this dishwasher, and put dirty things into dishwasher 2. By the time dishwasher 2 is full, dishwasher 1 is empty and you can start putting dirty things into this one.

If I was rich I think I would genuinely do this Grin

LonelyCloud · 27/10/2012 22:02

YABU.

Dishwashers are great. The time I spend loading / unloading is far less than the time I spend if I have to wash dishes by hand.

Yours isn't working properly. Try cleaning out the filter, checking it's got dishwasher salt in, and running it with some rinse aid. And then try it again with the dirty dishes.

lubeybooby · 27/10/2012 22:06

Adding another YABU - my dishwasher is amaaaaaaazing!

I did the washing up by hand the other week, thinking 'how bad can it be?'

FUCKSAKE! Never again. I cursed every second I was stood there. Ugh, it was awful and I am never ever doing that again.

Long as my dishwasher is stacked right, has salt and rinse aid, it gets everything completely perfect. I adore it, and I can put pots and pans in it.

applepieinthesky · 27/10/2012 22:40

YABU - I love love love my dishwasher. I had debated getting one for years and finally got one last month. It's one of the best things I ever bought.

Mine does a 35 minute quick wash which we have found is more than adequate for plates and cutlery. You can also put it on for an 8 minute soak if the dishwasher is only half empty and you don't want food drying on the plates before the dishwasher is full. We have never actually used the 2.5 hour intensive wash as we've never needed to.

valiumredhead · 27/10/2012 22:50

What's with the shocked faces wrt only booking holiday cottages with dishwashers? - so do I! Last thing I want to do on holiday is waste time slaving over a sink!

Scuttlebutter · 27/10/2012 22:54

We wouldn't be without ours. Had our first one when we were renting a flat near London about eight years ago. Thought I would never use it. Ha! A fortnight later, I was converted. Even for a household of two of us, it's brilliant and is fantastic when we have family to stay or entertain friends. Wouldn't be without it. Still hand wash my nice wine glasses etc but that's not a chore now that the bulk of the job is in the machine.

gaelicsheep · 27/10/2012 23:00

Oh gosh, having had one and now living in a place without I could not disagree more with the OP. Life is too short to be washing dishes all damned day, or so it feels. Plus our kitchen has no space for the dirty plates so they end up on the cooker, so I have to wash up before I can cook, then wash up while I cook cos there's nowhere to put the dirty pans. Oh it's making me shudder just thinking about it. Admittedly it is as much to do with the very poorly designed kitchen as anything else.

Smellslikecatspee · 27/10/2012 23:09

I desperately want one. . .

One of my friends friends is Orthodox Jew, and has a dairy and meat dishwasher, I envy her so much. . .

sashh · 28/10/2012 01:38

I only have room for a table top one - I would not be without.

Fine has a 'fruit' setting Confused

And you can cook in a dishwasher.

trixymalixy · 28/10/2012 01:42

YABU, I love my dishwasher!

musicalendorphins · 28/10/2012 01:16

Dh didn't really want one, but I did, he quickly learned to love it, we are on our second one now.

LonelyCloud · 28/10/2012 07:01

Cooking, sashh?

Does that sctually work?? [hconfused]

Sleepwhenidie · 28/10/2012 07:26

YABU I love dishwashers so much I have two and it is fantastic, my kitchen always looks tidy because when one dishwasher is full (which it always is, way before the end of a day) and on, we don't have to leave the following dirty stuff until it's finished.

I had hoped, as one poster said, to never have to put stuff away, but it doesn't really work like that in practice, it is actually easier to find things where they belong iykwim, rather than poke through the dishwasher to find them. So I do spend two or three minutes unloading Smile

RubyCreakingGates · 28/10/2012 07:34

I kept mine after it broke just because it was somewhere to conceal the dirty dishes until I could wash them!

I can't afford a new one and stupidly I haven't left room in my recent kitchen refurb for if the dishwasher fairy ever brings us a new one.

YABU

LtEveDallas · 28/10/2012 07:43

The only thing in my kitchen that I rate above my dishwasher is the kettle. I couldn't be without it now. It hides dirty dishes, it cleans better than my DH, it is energy efficient and helps the kitchen look tidier (even clean plates on a draining board makes me twitch)

I've cooked a salmon in it once and every Christmas make flavoured vodka in it.

I love it!

LonelyCloud · 28/10/2012 07:46

So how do you make flavoured vodka in a dishwasher?
