to think this is a bit naughty of Tesco?

So I'm browsing online with eldest DS (teaching him to shop per kg) and spotted this;

Tesco everyday value 12 meatballs 216g £1.50
Tesco 12 meatballs 360g £2.00
Tesco swedish style meatballs 350g £2.00
Country menu meatballs 367g £2.00

Now I know none of it's cheap (and I don't even buy meatballs) but am I wrong in thinking that it's a bit naughty for the 'Value' ones to be the most flippin expensive? And not by just a little bit either!

I really hate it with veg, one kind of broccoli x per kg and another just priced per piece.

They're hoping that people on a tight budget will pick up the Value range automatically. I'd imagine though that people on a budget will do price comparisons and weight comparisons.

It is cheeky though.

They are the dearest by weight, but the cheapest per pack.

Not suprising. I tend to look at price per 100g as this is generally clearly labeled on the shelf.

Sainsburys does this too. It makes me really angry that they do it with the "value" range, as they are ripping off the people who are least likely to have money to play around with.

They normally have the price per 100g as well, that is what I look at.

I think it's a really abhorrent business practise - they're basically screwing poor people who are going to buy the cheapest pack (not because they're too stupid to work it out but because they can still make a meal, albeit a less filling one, from the cheapest pack - they literally don't have more money to buy the bigger pack)

It's the same as charging poorer people more for electricity metres because they can't afford direct debits.

It's a loathsome (and common) capitalist practise.

Some times it is cheaper to buy 2 small packets of something that the larger equivalent sized value pack. It is cheeky

Oh I really fancy some meatballs now. Will have to make my own though as shop meatballs never have fennel seeds in them and what use is a meatball without a fennel seed I ask you!!

ooh he's found another one..came marching in declaring that the steak mince is £0.43 cheaper per kg on the meat counter and that the woo hoo half price offer is the expensive choice..

What have I started?

LFC - and don't forget people who can't afford a years worth of car tax in one go, so have to pay a premium for buying 6 months at a time

or bus fares that work out exorbitantly in single/daily journeys rather than purchasing weekly/monthly tickets.

The poorest in out society are usually screwed over the most it seems.

One tube cost 98p.

They often don't give both the prices per 100g, they do some by weight and some by piece. And if anything is on offer, they only state the price per weight based on the old price, so you can't compare the new one.

I am also irritated by packs that give nutritional information by weight, but then don't tell you the weight of what's in it. Either give the info per item (eg small cakes in a box) or state the weight of the item/whole box so you can work it out.

I think this sort of thing should carry fines.

I am a human calculator when shopping send him to a morrisons to find the best prices on their goods 'on special offer'.... its an eye opener for sure.

I always look at the price per volume, but I agree the "value" range should always be the cheapest. Tesco should price more carefully at this time as they are losing market share, and this is one of the issues that irks people.

The value ones are cheaper for 12 meatballs. Yes, they may be smaller but a price per KG is kind of irrelevant with something like this where you serve up a number of items rather than a portion IYSWIM. The difference in size per meatball is probably not very noticeable.

If you are serving dinner for 3 children with 4 meatballs each, the cheapest is the value version (depending on how many are in the servings for the others).

again £0.60 more to buy value product. That's it, never mind DS1 I'm on a mission now..

I always compare prices between packs, but have never looked at the prices between the packaged meats and the meat counter - so thanks to your son I will now be checking that as well.

I also compare ingredients and the fat % etc between the brands and the value stuff, usually they are identical, sometimes the value stuff is 'better' (less fat, less salt etc).

12p value rice pudding here too!
