To think drivers who beep me are complete idiots who should have more respect for for others?!

I am a fairly new driver. As such sometimes I prefer to wait until there is a slightly larger gap before pulling out of a side road / entering a roundabout / turning right etc. I am such I will improve with experience and confidence.

This morning I was waiting for a gap to turn right. I was on a fast road, it was dark and rainy so I was struggling to judge whether I had time to go or not and waiting for a gap. The t*at behind me aggressively gave me the horn. This has happened before. AIBU to think drivers should show more patience and respect for others who might be newer drivers?

You also don't get failed for hesitation if the only other option is pulling out into oncoming traffic and causing a accident. You get failed for being dangerous then.

GiveMummyTheWhizzer · 26/10/2012 08:31

Your OP suggests that this is happening frequently which make it seem like YABU and perhaps have a little too much hesitation.

Why not take a couple more lessons or an advanced driving day to improve confidence?

RobotLover68 · 26/10/2012 08:31

my Dh told me when you're at a roundabout only look at the car in front until you KNOW they've gone, THEN start looking for your opportunity - it stops rear ending people who are still sitting at roundabouts when 73 opportunities have passed

Oh and you can get failed for hesitancy because I did

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2012 08:35

Robot that's sound advice from your DH. Leads to disaster when one is concentrating on the roundabout and see a gap...that the person sitting in front of you does not!

It's never happened to me (thus far,I'm not perfect!) but I've seen it happen so many times!

mutny · 26/10/2012 08:45

mutny you fail tests for hesitation when you've left great big gap for no reason
I mid read the quote I quoted. Oops.

You also don't get failed for hesitation if the only other option is pulling out into oncoming traffic and causing a accident. You get failed for being dangerous then.

But this^^ is not hesitation. This is waiting. The fact that this seems to happen often to the OP suggests she is hesitating.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2012 08:57

mutny on your second point, that's true. I mentioned that because the OP said she has been beeped whilst waiting for a safe moment to turn.

It's hard to tell whether it would be hesitating or not in real life. But in that situation, cars behind can't see what you can so shouldn't beep really. Unlike at roundabouts where everyone can see. I have never beeped stone for hesitating at a roundabout. Never. .

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2012 08:57

*someone not stone!

valiumredhead · 26/10/2012 09:00

You do get a point for hesitation in your test.

I would suggest P plates OP :)

I disagree you need more lessons, it takes time to get 'nippy' in traffic - it comes with practise.

BlingLoving · 26/10/2012 09:04

Sorry but yabu. If it happens a lot I would imagine you are doing this a lot and to extreme levels.

Contrary to popular belief, most people don't hoot very quickly so I think regular tooting is a sign. I would get some extra lessons or get someone to drive with you a bit more.

Unfortunately, slow, supposedly risk averse drivers can be as dangerous as those who drive crazy.

Untrue where I live!! Lived in London years and tears and people don't tend to hoot - moved out and my God the difference her is incredible. Dh has been driving since he was 20 and has an HGV licence and driven huge great big arctics so very experienced and even he is shocked at quickly you get beeped at for nothing here. Visiting family have said the same - all experienced drivers.

So depends where you live entirely ime.

valiumredhead · 26/10/2012 09:09

And worth remembering that NO ONE should be hooting at anyone to hurry up, that isn't what the horn s there for.

germyrabbit · 26/10/2012 09:11

nope i doubt you need extra lessons, people just hoot more these days as someone said earlier they are all so much more important than you dontcha know.

you passed your test, you are allowed to drive!

People are just bloody rude once they get into their car. Don't worry about what they are doing, concentrate on your own driving. It'll get easier once you've been driving a bit longer. As others have said, maybe get yourself some new driver plates. That should help to get the impatient nobheads people off your back.

Alameda · 26/10/2012 09:12

just go

the other cars have brakes and the drivers can see you

germyrabbit · 26/10/2012 09:13

eveyrone has their hates on the road, my own personal hate is audis who drive up your arse at 100 on the motoway

a little consideration for all drivers (with all their faults) is required

Babs you do realise that 60 is a limit not an instruction?

Alameda · 26/10/2012 09:17

I wouldn't beep but I do start chewing the steering wheel in private, frustrated despair

Chandon · 26/10/2012 09:20

I always try to guess the OP title, yours said" aIbu to think drivers who beep me are compl..." I always try to fill in the gap, and I assumed it would read:

"Aibu to think drivers who beep me are complimenting me on my driving style?"

Or complimeting me on my looks.

Right, I am back off to lala land.

Anyway, just take your time, people are so impatient!

nametakenagain · 26/10/2012 09:28

Stick with it, and ignore the beeping because it may pressure you into making a mistake. Take the time and space you need.

differentnameforthis · 26/10/2012 09:31

At least we know who causes the accidents....many of you admit that you would be more patient with drivers who display the P plates, perhaps you need to be more patient FULL STOP. Why is it hard to sit behind a driver who is waiting for a gap to cross a busy road? 30 seconds? What's the hurry!

OP, as long as you have confidence, don't change the way you drive Waiting for a gap that is right for YOU is sensible. Don't drive for other people, drive for yourself. Juts be safe to all around you.

mutny · 26/10/2012 09:31

Babs you do realise that 60 is a limit not an instruction?

That's not what she said though is it. Someone who drives at 40 regardless of the speed limit is either and nervous driver (verging on dangerous as they speeding) or not paying attention.

differentnameforthis · 26/10/2012 09:34

But that driver's hesitancy would have caused the issue as it is perfectly normal to anticipate the traffic to move when the way forward becomes clear

I don't understand how you nearly hit them. Did you expect them to go & they didn't, thus having to break hard? In that case, it is only your fault because you should have waited until they actually moved & not just expect them to go when you wanted them to.
