Aibu to think that an 11 yo smoking is wrong

ringodingo · 25/10/2012 16:59

This child is 11 years old and has hold of roll up tobacco and smokes them in the street with older sibling. It,s wrong to be doing this at such a young age and where did they get them from. Aibu to be worried about the health aspects for such a young child?

No. It is completely right. Don't be such a killjoy.

newmum001 · 25/10/2012 17:03

Of course yanbu to be concearned. Is it a child you know and could maybe speak to the parents? If you don't know him the best thing you can do is try to not think about it, it's sad but unfortunately very common.

Fishwife1949 · 25/10/2012 17:04

EdgarAllanPond · 25/10/2012 17:09

yanbu too, but different question: what to do?

newmum001 · 25/10/2012 17:10

I don't even think it's a case of having a sad home life. It wasn't so long ago that i was at secondary school (well it is but i remember it well) and most kids had tried smoking by age 11. Not that it's right at all but kids experiment. Hopefully his parents will cotton on and go ape shit like mine did. I have never seen my mum so angry. She phoned the extended family to cause maximum shame and embarrassment. I guess my point is i (and most people i know) tried smoking at a young age and i didn't have a sad home life at all.

shrimponastick · 25/10/2012 17:11

So sad.

YANBU.

Do you know the child?

SoleSource · 25/10/2012 17:11

If it was my child I would be furious!

Fishwife1949 · 25/10/2012 17:11

Dont think there is much you can do the type of people who allow a 11 year old to smoke wont take kindly to advice i dont think

valiumredhead · 25/10/2012 17:11

I don't see any kids smoking where I live - one good thing about making them SO expensive! I know 2 people who have been forced to give up as it's just too much money going out every week. Can only be a good thing.

Where is this child getting the money from -his older brother?

puds11 · 25/10/2012 17:13

I started smoking when i was 12.

Sparklingbrook · 25/10/2012 17:13

I started a thread a while back because there were children in uniform smoking outside DS2's Middle School. Not universal condemnation of it though.

YerMaw1989 · 25/10/2012 18:48

I was smoking at 11, but no its not right.

lljkk · 25/10/2012 18:53

Last year I told a dad I knew of several people who had seen his 10yo DD smoking. He looked absolutely devastated. :(

socharlotte · 25/10/2012 18:57

Whay ahve you posted this.what did you expect people to reply?

freddiefrog · 25/10/2012 19:00

I started smoking at around 15 (gave up years ago though)

Id be furious if my 11 year old started smoking

I have a 13 year old foster child. They smoke, I hate it but I can't stop them. I have to give them a set pocket money allowance each week which they spend on fags. I refuse to buy them cigarettes, but they manage to get hold of them. All I can do is ban them from smoking in my house/garden. I tried to encourage them to give up with Stoptober but got my wrists slapped by their social worker.

YerMaw1989 · 26/10/2012 12:37

its arguably harder to be a teen now (last 15 years) than it ever has which in my view is why so many smoke as well as rebellion of course (controversial) and is why so many of my day smoked 2000-2006

I also think it links to why so many teen girls smoked then compared to boys as being a teen girl is very hard.

WorraLiberty · 26/10/2012 12:41

I have no idea why reading the OP just brought coffee out of my nose Blush

Probably because it's a complete no brainer.

Were you expecting anyone to say "YABU, fags are an important part of a child's 5-a-day?"

CogitoErgoSometimes · 26/10/2012 12:42

YANBU... he should have filter tips at the very least....

ledkr · 26/10/2012 12:47

What strange question of course it's not right

I postively encourage my 9 year old to up his smokes intake so that I can wean him onto a crack pipe in time for the Christmas party season.

OP YABU to even ask the question.

LolaDontCryOverSpiltBleach · 26/10/2012 13:03

YABU

How are you expecting them to get out of P.E without a cough and wheeze?
