spitting feathers over an article i read yesterday in the newspaper about this subject. it's common knowledge that the average size is 16 and over in this country so how would that make a lot of women feel? does it really matter what your size? also why the emphasis on women why not men? many of them carry weight, noone seems to say anything about it. we all come in various shapes, sizes and colours and everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way be it inside or out. media should stop giving us these so called ideals and let us decide for ourselves how we wish to look.

Actually TheAccidentalTourist I have facial scarring from a cycling accident, which is one of the reasons I went into dentistry... OK most people barely notice it and I'm lucky. But you can do something about being overweight, but not scarring.

I digress. Your appearance is partially dictated by your genes, partially by your lifestyle choices. The latter of which reflect your personality. My father was suffering from diabetes due to being overweight and a smoker at my age and died in his early fifties from heart disease. I did not inherit good genes, or at least I inherited genes that are probably rather well designed for toiling hard in fields on a restricted diet.

So get off your own high horse, you don't know what you're talking about. My comments about chubby men were because the OP said that women were unfairly singled out.

Worraliberty However, my BMI remained well into the 'healthy range' even though I could clearly see my belly was carrying all that visceral fat that was clinging to my liver and kidneys etc.*

That is what I think is generally ignored. When I had my extra 3kg, it was visibly around those organs, on my stomach. It can't be good for you.

Xiaoxiong · 25/10/2012 10:16

I'm 5'6" and a size 12 and am overweight because of my midsection, even though my BMI says I'm normal. DS is 10 months and still BF so not sure how much I can do about my boobs, but I am certainly very chubby around the midsection.

fragola my DH and his friends do actually about their weight/size/shape/flab when they get together - he is 6'2" and has just gone from 16st to 14.5st just through giving up alcohol in the week and running on Sundays. BMI still says he's overweight but he's no longer flabby. Interestingly they all said they feel significant pressure, not necessarily to be "thin" but certainly not to carry any excess flab.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:16

those of you who feel fat over a size 10, are you for fucking real?
I bet you are the sort of women who pick over salad leaves at lunch, count calories out loud and talk about your diet to everyone all day long boring us all to death

Ephiny · 25/10/2012 10:17

I don't necessarily think BMI is 'too generous' - it's reasonable that there's a broad range of 'healthy weights' to accommodate the fact that people of the same height have different shapes and builds.

But I agree that just being in the 'healthy' range doesn't necessarily mean you're not carrying extra weight, especially if you have a slight build and/or carry your fat around the middle. Personally I don't like my BMI to be over 20 as then I do start to look chubby and it probably isn't healthy. BMI gives a rough idea of where you should be, but things like waist measurement, body fat, (and even just an honest look in the mirror) are useful too.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:19

'Call me shallow, but if I were single, theres no way I'd contemplate going out with a chubby man, no matter how "nice" he was.'

Yes gee gee, you a re indeed shallow!
Fucking hell, if that comment was from a man, about a woman, there'd be a riot on here! How utterly depressing. What a depressing thread.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 25/10/2012 10:21

Geegee888 don't lecture me, I do know that you come across as shallow in the extreme. I do know what I'm talking about, I'm also in the medical profession.
It's the way that you say it that's the problem.

geegee888 · 25/10/2012 10:22

autumnlights12 Fucking hell, if that comment was from a man, about a woman, there'd be a riot on here! How utterly depressing. What a depressing thread.

Are men considered so sacrosanct that they are beyond criticism or something? Its about bloody time someone said it.

And no, I don't pick over salad leaves or bore people about my diet, I'm out and about being active and enjoying my sport. Maybe you should try it!

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:23

fucking hideous thread full of snotty, judgmental comments.

CoteDAzur · 25/10/2012 10:23

I'm 5'6" and was chubby back when I was a size 12. I would have been positively fat as a size 14 and so would anyone else at or below my height.

"it's common knowledge that the average size is 16"

So what? If true, that only shows most women in the UK are very fat.

Nothing wrong with being happy with your body whatever its size, but this doesn't give you the right to call people who point out that size 12-14 is chubby "idiots".

You don't seem to have an AIBU question in your OP, but it sounds to me like YABU. HTH.

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2012 10:25

"those of you who feel fat over a size 10, are you for fucking real?
I bet you are the sort of women who pick over salad leaves at lunch, count calories out loud and talk about your diet to everyone all day long boring us all to death"

Erm no...actually I am a realist with a very healthy appetite and a regular pizza/roast dinner/bacon sarnie eater Grin

I've never counted calories in my life and I rarely weigh myself.

I don't need to. I just use my eyes and my honesty when deciding to shed the pounds that are creeping on to my belly.

I'm not sure why the nastiness in your post though?

Do you assume overweight people pick over doughnuts all day and bore everyone to death talking about their diets too, or do you just reserve that sort of venom for anyone who's a size 10 or under? Confused

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 25/10/2012 10:25

yup, all to do with your frame.
at 5'9, I am a size 12-14 at my current weight of 11st7, and am definitely chubby. While my BMI is just in the healthy range at 24 point something, I could lose 2st and still be well within the healthy range, and this is where I need to be for my frame.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:26

geegee, I'm pretty sure I'm probably a bit larger than you but I'd bet my last Mars Bar that I'm a lot more attractive, both outside and inside!
I married a chubby man. He's lost weight since, because he got into hiking and cycling. You'll be amazed to know that I fancied him just as much when was chubby!

Ephiny · 25/10/2012 10:28

Actually in my experience it tends to be fat women who go on about diets and calories and pick over salad leaves etc (and then presumably go home and stuff themselves guiltily).

Personally I enjoy my food when I'm hungry, stop eating when I start to feel full, and otherwise don't really think about it much.

NettoSpookerstar · 25/10/2012 10:28

I'm with Worra, I'm obsessed with food, in a good way, as in cooking it and exploring new things. (Umming and ahhing over whether to spend £7 on mayonaisse currently!)
I have a food blog and eat all sorts of things, and use a deep fat fryer often.
I don't overeat though and am a size 8.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:30

well Ephiny, that's not my experience. And reading this thread, there's a lot of very self conscious posts from women who are clearly very preoccupied with their clothes size and how attractive it makes them on the outside and not much about health.

LittleFriendSusan · 25/10/2012 10:30

Thing is, it all depends on your frame / body shape. There have been a few threads in the past along the lines of "if you're 5ftX and a size 12, how much do you weigh?" and the results always vary wildly. As so many others have said, dress sizes are meaningless, it's all about how / where you carry your weight, and overall health.

FWIW, I'm 5ft5 and a size 12-14, though veering more on the 14 side at the moment. I am overweight- chubby but not obese. I do have a flabby belly though - not good, so I am trying to do something about it.

I look and feel my best at a size 12. Weight-wise for me, this is around 10 - 10.5 stone. Anything below 9.5 stone and a size 10, I look positively ill. Size 10 is borderline. I have large hands / wrists and broad shoulders... I'm not meant to be that size.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:31

so Nett, are you saying that anyone over a size 8/10 overeats?! Seriously?

TomsBentPinky · 25/10/2012 10:31

I'm a 14 cause I'm a piggy. Simples.

fuckadoodlepoopoo · 25/10/2012 10:31

Im 5.2 and at a size 10 i am chubby. Enough so that my thighs chafe and i have a double chin. I have a very small build so its all chub.

That is separate to the issue of women being judged on their size though and am not sure why you lumped the two together.

TomsBentPinky · 25/10/2012 10:31

I know I do it and am trying to stop but I emotionally eat, :(

CoteDAzur · 25/10/2012 10:32

geegee - I'm a runner, too, and I know where you are coming from re pride in your body and all that, but you might like to slightly mellow that harsh judgemental view on your man before old age starts kicking in.

By the way, the 3 kgs you lost are highly unlikely to have affected your knee injury. That was probably correlation rather than causation. My knee injury stayed with me through the 10 kgs I lost, only to quickly go away after five minutes on the ski slopes - something to do with the position you assume when skiing and the effect that has on knee caps, apparently.

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2012 10:32

No autumn that's clearly not what Netto is saying.

She's talking about herself not anyone.

NettoSpookerstar · 25/10/2012 10:32

No, not at all, just making the point that because I'm slim I don't just pick at salads.
I really enjoy good food.

autumnlights12 · 25/10/2012 10:34

jaw droppingly awful, depressing thread. Makes me sad to be female when I read some of these posts.

PerryCombover · 25/10/2012 10:35

This thread is mostly vile.

People should enjoy their lives and stop beating themselves up about details that are mostly meaningless.

If your weight is preventing you from doing the things that you want to do..be they
wear leather trousers
run a marathon
or climb the stairs
then you should try to address it

We should be supportive of people trying to do and be what they want.
People all have very different lives and experiences. Their physical weight is none of our business.

Saying a 12 or 14 or 16 is fat is beside the point. It speaks more to the person saying it than the person they are addressing
