To expect 5 yr old DS to spend 8 hours on a plane in only 1 pair of trousers?

i am packing to go to Orlando for half term and want to keep clothes to a minimum. Can I reasonably expect to just take 1 swim shorts, 1 shorts, 1 long trousers and wear 1 pair of jeans on plane? We're going for a week and staying in a hotel so nonwashing facilities unless we pay $100.

Am I misunderstanding, your 5 year old son is sharing a bed with your teenage daughter? And he wets the bed? Hmm

Mrsjay · 21/10/2012 17:15

we took holdallas last time we went to florida well 1 and a case it didn't rip,

pigletmania · 21/10/2012 17:18

What's wrong with tat stuntgirl?

lurkedtoolong · 21/10/2012 17:42

I realise it is slightly off-topic but I do have the same worry as StuntGirl... is your teenage daughter a saint? I would have hated to share a bed with my bed-wetting brother.

Back on-topic, unless you're carrying a lot of heavy things I think you're underestimating how much you can get into your baggage allowance. Clothes aren't that heavy so you can probably take more than you think. More shorts definitely needed.

Cahoots · 21/10/2012 17:50

Nylon'y shorts and soccer shirts are ugly but extremely light, easy to pack and wash.

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 17:56

Yes, stunt and lurked when I booked the holiday the travel agent said that we could upgrade to a family room on arrival but having picked up the tickets etc the new travel agent ( the previous one not working there any more , hmnn wonders why) said no, 2 queen size beds it is. So this is why I'm packing tonnes of pullup thingies and bed mats and lots of pyjamas. Yes she is a saint, but we're only going to Orlando so that she can go to Harry Potter World so she can't complain too much!!!!

We travelled with a daypack each last summer and managed a complete outfit for five days (washed once during trip) plus toiletries in a regular sized backpack (daypack/school bag sort of one). We packed in ziplock bags and sucked the air out of them before loading them into the backpacks. If you each take one of those as a carryon (plus a small bag for stuff like a book for the plane) and two suitcases that should be ample space for plenty of clothes for you.

Hopandaskip · 21/10/2012 18:07

Take a lilo and a sheet sleeping bag with you and ask for an extra pillow and blanket. We have done that when our boys don't want to sleep together.

ihearsounds · 21/10/2012 18:12

No I don't think it is enough.
Took ds2 at that age and we took 3 or 4 pairs of swim shorts - you are not taking into consideration that you will not be spending all day by the pool. You do go in/elsewhere and chances are when returning to the pool, the shorts are still wet.
Aircon doesn't necessarily dry things. We had things still wet in the morning even though been in the aircon all night.
1 pair of shorts doesn't cover accidental spills etc. Again took a couple of pairs.
Plain wore trackie bottoms. Depending on the climate jeans not a good idea. But still needs more than the pair on the plane.
Nappies, take one or 2 and buy when you get there.
You don't need to use all the cabin allowance for his entertainment. Just a rucksack that he carries should be more than enough. Same with teen. You and partner have spare clothes for just in case.
Google the airline to see what on board entertainment they provide.

Having travelled with 5 year old DD on a long haul flight several times with no incident, I was rather surprised when she was copiously sick on landing at Heathrow. Sick all over herself, and the seat, and me.

Wish we'd all had a change of clothes. I had to go to the Olympic shop in T5 and buy some horrible clothes for £40 for her before our connecting flight. Moral of the story, take a change of clothes for everyone on a flight!

2rebecca · 21/10/2012 19:16

For a week I'd take 3 pairs trousers/shorts including pair being worn, 1 or 2 extra for kids who get grubbier.

2rebecca · 21/10/2012 19:17

Sorry 4 including, 3 excluding ie 1 pair to last 2 days

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 19:42

Just read the thread about being poor in an affluent area. So if you're thinking I'm stealth boasting I would like to say that we haven't been on a plane since 2004. Thankyou.

Blimmin' 'ell! I could pack for a ski holiday for the five of us in 2 suitcases. (Not including equipment, but all the big bulky clothes.) I'm not really sure why this is such an issue for you. Confused

conantg · 21/10/2012 19:54

Washing clothes in hotels: scoosh them around in the free shampoo. Rinse. Wring. Then wrap them very tightly in a bath towel for a few minutes before hanging them to dry on towel rail. They dry very quickly this way.

Hopandaskip · 21/10/2012 20:46

Not sure why this is even an issue, shorts for five year old boys (especially lightweight ones as opposed to jeans with lots of pockets) do not take up much room at all. How much is this holiday costing? Do you want to spend any of it washing or buying clothes?

We have also flown a lot with cheap holdalls $10 from walmart cheap on several occasions. Not had any problems with them. I don't put breakable or fancy stuff in them.

foreverondiet · 21/10/2012 20:55

Only you know your child. My 6 year old DS would need new top every day (food) and new pants/shorts every day (wee).

But he would wear no socks and would be happy to live in sandals all week, and sleep just in pull up. So he would need for week 1 trousers, one cardigan (both worn travelling) 7 shorts, 7 pants, 7 t-shirts, 7 pull ups, 2 swimming trunks and 1 pair sandals. Doesn't take up much space.

We made mistake of not taking nappies on holiday once to USA no shops in resort hotel spend a fortune on a cab to take us to a shop!

firemansamisnormansdad · 22/10/2012 11:20

owed and hop It is an issue because our car has a very small boot so the suitcases themselves have to be quite small to fit in the boot. We are taking small cabin bags as well but:

the issue is about space
Tiny Car
Tiny suitcases to fit in tiny car

We would also like to buy some souvenirs to bring back in the same tiny suitcases for our tiny car, so we need to leave some space in the suitcases for Harry Potter himself.

firemansamisnormansdad · 22/10/2012 11:21

And no, given the cost of the holiday, we can't buy a bigger car to put in bigger suitcases to accommodate the extra clothes.

Thank you.

forevergreek · 22/10/2012 11:52

Yeah we would also use two cases for 4 when skiing! I dont see the problem

Just take a regular rucksack/ handbag on the plane instead off all this 'cabin luggage'. What do you need on a plane? Change of clothes each, book/ kindle, couple of small toys if small. This all fits in my handbag.

I only take one rucksack for myself and two under 3, sure you will fine! They have tv/ entertainment on the plane So I doubt a 5 year old will want much more, a film or two with a nap and your there

I'd probably take another 1 or 2 pairs of shorts. When we went to Egypt for 2 weeks we only took a weeks worth of clothes. I just washed a few bits in the sink with a bit of bodywash!

MrsVincentPrice · 22/10/2012 21:18

Roofbox for car? Will cost real money, but you'd get use out of it if you're going to have a tiny car for some time.

OhlimpPricks · 22/10/2012 21:24

If you securely wrap the nappies and mats in black bin bags and masking tape, label them with your name and address, and 'contains child's nappies/diapers they will accept teams hold luggage. Then that could surely travel on someone's lap as it won't be heavy.

OhlimpPricks · 22/10/2012 21:25
  • accept as hold luggage.
