To expect 5 yr old DS to spend 8 hours on a plane in only 1 pair of trousers?

i am packing to go to Orlando for half term and want to keep clothes to a minimum. Can I reasonably expect to just take 1 swim shorts, 1 shorts, 1 long trousers and wear 1 pair of jeans on plane? We're going for a week and staying in a hotel so nonwashing facilities unless we pay $100.

Can you not get/borrow some cabin/hand luggage-sized cases? You'd be amazed by what you can fit in one, honestly.

When we go to the ILs for a week (in this country so unreliable cold/wet weather) I could easily get a weeks worth of clothes for a 5yo in one. Where you're going the weather will more reliable so less needed.

Plus a tube of travel wash and you're sorted.

Suitcases don't need to be any stronger for a plane than anything else. Confused

Get a couple of cheap nylon zippy holdall bags. No weight, maximum flexibility to squeeze in car footwells etc.

Mrsjay · 21/10/2012 14:44

I would take out some of his onplane stuff and pack more clothes for him we managed to take 2 cases for 4 people 2 adults 2 teens for a fortnight in florida is your teenager taking loads, you can buy cheap shorts when you go but i do think he will need at least 3 pairs for a week , there is a walmart near universal studios it is HUGE taxis dont cost a lot you could buy his nappies if you run out also there is an evergreens on Idrive you can get there from universal

ALWAYS take a spare sets of clothing in carryon for EVERYONE when flying.
Thats our rule.
Things get spilt down people, children have upset tummies and find they can't wait in the queue for the plane loo, and luggage gets lost.
All these things have happened to us at one time or another.

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 14:51

Cool, thanks. We have canvas bags but those can easily be ripped en route to the hold. I think i will be one of those annoying people who carry too much in the cabin. I once took a flight to India and saw a woman trying to check in a washing machine as her hand luggage. Am not joking!!! I've always travelled light ie went backpacking for 18!months with a 10litre backpack.

I would want spare for the plane journey in case he pukes or sees himself!

valiumredhead · 21/10/2012 14:53

Wees

Mrsjay · 21/10/2012 14:55

It would just be such a hassle to go on a holiday with a 5 yr old and he gets dirty and you try to washout clothes for him , is your luggage allowance 15 or 20 KG it amazes you what you can fit in enjoy your holiday Universal is FAB i preferred it to Disney.

Primrose123 · 21/10/2012 15:04

I agree you don't need cases, you can get a large wheeled holdall, and they are much easier for packing. They're quite cheap in Tesco.

Are you sure it will be $100 for washing? We stayed in a Disney hotel, and they have laundries on-site, and it was approx. $2 for a load of washing, $2 for a load of drying, and $1 for a box of washing powder.

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 15:08

It's not the weight, it's what fits into 4 suitcases that fit in the car!

OP posts:
forevergreek · 21/10/2012 15:23

2 suitcases worth is loads though! Surely you and dh sharing, son and sister? Sharing? Half a case each. Simple.

BackOnceAgainWithLoopyLoops · 21/10/2012 15:24

Use your canvas ones, wrap contents in black bin bag inside. If canvas rips (though not sure why it would, think you are being a bit precious here) contents should be kept in place.

ReallyTired · 21/10/2012 15:26

I would take spare clothes for a five year old. Ds at the age of four had a toilet accident on the plane. There was turbulance and he was not allowed out of his seat to go to toilet for an hour and half hence the toilet accident.

Children sometimes experience travel sickness as well.

aquashiv · 21/10/2012 15:28

If you run out you can always buy more.

EcoLady · 21/10/2012 15:32

Having been on a flight from Hong Kong to UK (having come from New Zealand) with a 7 yo who threw up everywhere, I'd say that you DEFINITELY need a change of clothes for the plane!

I'd get some mega cheapo cotton shorts,t-shirts and joggers - you can either rinse at night or chuck if particularly nasty.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/10/2012 15:40

I only ever take cheap nylon type holdalls on holiday - large gym bags. Lighter bag means more clothes, suitcases take up too much of my baggage allowance!

In 12 years of going abroad, at least once often twice a year I've only had one bag ripped and even that was a small hole in the end pocket. 6 years on I still use the bag - just not that pocket.

tanteclaire · 21/10/2012 16:06

A lot of US hotels (of all standards, especially those aimed at families) have a coin-op laundry. You just need a roll of quarters or they have a change machine. That would certainly not be enough clothes for my kids.

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 16:07

Cheers ladies. I have had a couple of bags sliced open with a knife which is why I have samsonite now.

firemansamisnormansdad · 21/10/2012 16:09

Just found a bag which i use for weekends away and it's about the max size of the cabin allowance. Hooray, will put 3 days worth of clothes in there xx

Luggage allowance is usually generous on transatlantic flights, and large soft holdalls can easily go in car footwells on the journey to and from the airport.

LiegeAndLief · 21/10/2012 16:14

I'm going on a three hour flight with a 6yo next week and am not trusting him to keep one pair of trousers clean! Although he does get travel sick...

You need more than 1 trousers for the flight. What if he has an accident, spills something on them, gets them covered in food. Its a long flight and a lot of drt can happen
