to think drinkers are discriminated against compared to smokers

I asked my boss yesterday if I could nip down to the carpark to have a quick glass of wine. He said no Sad

The other morning I was hosting a sewing circle in my own house. I casually waved a bottle of bacardi in the air and asked "does anyone mind if I drink"? Well, the looks...... So I had to go out into the garden and drink it behind a bush.

Last week someone gave out to me for standing at the bus stop, minding my own business and drinking a bottle of chardonnay while I waited for the bus to arrive.

These are just a few examples of the total discrimination I come across every week against people who just want to be able to have a drink without sanctimonious people making them feel bad.

AIBU to think this is wrong and unfair?

Lol!
YABU - drinking in the middle of a working day smacks of alcoholism.

Terrible.
I mean if you are a smoker you get to nip outside for a break at work; but people don't like it if you go out at the same time & down a can of Special Brew.
Just can't think why that is a problem?

Best stick to the Brew & avoid both smoking & alcohol.
I'm sure that Brew drinkers don't face discrimination in quite that way luckily.

What a very odd thread.

Titsalinabumsquash · 20/10/2012 13:43

Hmm have you attempted trying to justify your drinking with the classic lines,

"But I'm a considerate drinker! I'd never drink all over people and I go in the garden to do it when the DCs are asleep!"

Lol, made me chuckle this morning, thanks OP Grin

I have regular wine breaks and no one bats an eye lid if I have a few shots of tequila at the bus stop. But if I light up a cig everyone kicks off. It's a smokerist world so YABVVVVU

Titsalinabumsquash · 20/10/2012 13:45

Oh also try ...

"I pay my taxes it's my right to drink if I want, I enjoy drinking! I'm an adult!" If all else fails do the .. "Fuck you all, I don't give a shit what you think." Wink

Nancy66 · 20/10/2012 13:47

..and don't even mention doing it in the car.

I put the window down so the fumes go out - but still not good enough for some people.

Jusfloatingby · 20/10/2012 13:48

Lucky you InSP

One of the mums at school invited a few of us back for coffee and cake the other morning. After about an hour I took a can of budweiser out of my bag and said 'I'm just popping out to the garden for a drink".

They looked horrified. Sanctimonious cows.

oh it's a joke

JeezyOrangePips · 20/10/2012 13:51

YANBU. At my workplace, smokers could nip out for a fag, but there was a clause in the contract that I couldn't be over the limit.

Smokers, however, could smoke as much as they wanted.

Drink fascists, that's what they are!

GeraldineAubergine · 20/10/2012 13:55

I was assisting in surgery the other day when I stepped out of theatre for a slippery nipple and as I had ten minutes left of my break I quickly downed a pint of stout too. Imagine my surprise when I was asked to leave and escorted out by security whilst all the smokers puffed away without reprimand!

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 20/10/2012 13:56

Did you.not offer them one? I'd be pretty unhappy if you didn't offer me and just left the social group to drink! If I go for a drink I always see if anyone else wants to join me.

Some people drink Budweiser some drink Carling. Drinkers are fussy, smokers aren't Grin

SheppySheepdog · 20/10/2012 13:57

I've recently cut down to ten a day, pretty proud of myself. Grin

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 20/10/2012 13:58

Gerald did you drink in the drinking zone though? There are signs every where

GeraldineAubergine · 20/10/2012 14:16

That's perhaps where I went wrong. Tbh when I threw the empty glasses in the pavement and then ground them with my foot it really hurt so maybe this a sign I should cut down.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 20/10/2012 14:19

I think you do need to cut down. Maybe next time don't have the stout

Jusfloatingby · 20/10/2012 14:55

There was a fire drill in work last week. A few of us took advantage of it to nip down the lane and swig a couple of crafty cans. Guess what? We all received a verbal warning Angry. Nobody said a word to the smokers who had nipped down the other end of the lane for a ciggie.
