To straighten my 2 year olds hair?

FannyFifer · 19/10/2012 20:03

My 2 year old dd has really frizzy wispy hair, it's quite long but looks very thin and straggly, like mine.

I was doing my hair a few weeks ago and she was watching so I did her hair with the GHD's as well. Shock

I put the heat spray on first, but is it really bad??

I have to admit it looked so much better, i usually have to put it in a pony tail as she never looks tidy.

I did it again today for the second time, once every few weeks is ok though, isn't it?

Awaits flaming.

This can't be serious surely?

Sod the damage to her hair. What about when her ear gets caught (and it happens, I bet everyone who straightens their own hair has done it at some point) or she grabs the hot irons, or she tries to do it herself. it is just a recipe for disaster!

CathynotClaire · 19/10/2012 20:21

YABU. What message are you giving your DD about her natural hair. You don't like yours? fine. Do not pass this idea on to your DD. Frizzy hair is not tidy enough? who says a two year old's hair must be 'tidy'. I'm sure she is lovely just as she is.

AgentZigzag · 19/10/2012 20:22

2 YO DD2 has really curly hair, and someone asked me whether I'd curled it! I couldn't believe they thought -

1 - I'd be so vain as to care that much as to what DDs hair looked like, so long as it's out of her eyes it's lovely because it's hers

2 - I could get her to sit still long enough to do it, and so still as to not accidentally burn her.

YABU, she's only 2 bless her.

SirSugar · 19/10/2012 20:23

NO, you will fuck up her hair, its not the same texture as adult hair. GHDs heat up to 200 degrees.

Cut it if you want her to look tidy and encourage it to thicken up

Floggingmolly · 19/10/2012 20:23

Didn't Katie Price do this?

TerrorNotSoFrightened · 19/10/2012 20:23

This does happen in real life, my friends SIL does it and has done since her baby was a lot younger than two. she is a complete knobhead though.

OP, if you are for real, please just wash it in conditioner as already suggested. If its really bad in the mornings, comb through and put a tiny amount of hair oil or serum through it, starting at the nape of the neck and working forward.

Iggly · 19/10/2012 20:25

Do you want your child to be a mini you or a child?

Maybe your hair is so frazzled and frizzy becuase you straighten it so much.

Try the curly girl hair method (my two have curly hair but I get it trimmed every couple of months and use the curly girl method. Works a treat)

conantg · 19/10/2012 20:29

Grin at TerrorNotSoFrightened "my friends SIL does it - she is a complete knobhead though".

marriedinwhite · 19/10/2012 20:29

Your dd is the girl she is. You are giving her the impression she isn't good enough by doing this. Sowing terrible seeds for her future self esteem.

She has frizzy hair - so what? She probably has pretty eyes, a dainty build, a fantastic brain. Celebrate the positives, don't try to change the way she is.

catgirl1976 · 19/10/2012 20:29

YABU

But I was catsbum face today when a girl at work told me Friday nights were "girly" night with her 4 year old DD where she would paint her nails and straighten her hair Hmm

MrsVincentPrice · 19/10/2012 20:31

Damage to her hair is no big deal - it's dead, it'll grow back, you can always just cut it.
And I plait, condition and detangle DD's hair daily in an attempt to make her look less like a haystack - I don't think it's telling her that she's not good enough as she is.

HOWEVER...... YABVVVVU to regularly use GHDs on a toddler because they're really fucking dangerous. Find another way.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 19/10/2012 20:31

YABU I had doubts when dd asked me to straighten hers age 7 for a disco as her hair had been in plaits all say and was frizzy. I did it really quickly but only after scaring her witless that she'd get burnt if she moved a muscle.

I haven't done it since (and have remembered no plaits on disco days)

2yo is far too young. Her poor baby hair!

AgentZigzag · 19/10/2012 20:32

A good way of not getting your post deleted conantg Grin

marriedinwhite · 19/10/2012 20:33

But catgirl my dh and ds are away this weekend and 14 year old dd and I are going to have a "girly" day with one of my single friends on Sunday. Is that OK? No nail painting or primping. But I did buy DD some lip gloss stuff from Next yesterday because she had a bad day at school.

crashdoll · 19/10/2012 20:33

YABU, toddlerhood is the one time in your life when crazy, frizzy hair is cute.

EvenIfYouSeeAPoppy · 19/10/2012 20:34
Shock Straightening small children's hair. Seriously?

Wrong and inappropriate on so many levels.

catgirl1976 · 19/10/2012 20:35

Well married, your DD is 14 not 4 for a start..........

Mintyy · 19/10/2012 20:36

Well, its a little bit naff to have a "girly" day with your 14 year old dd, but really really naff to have a "girly" day with one's 4 year old dd. Or can you not see the difference marriedinwhite?

LittlePickleHead · 19/10/2012 20:36

I don't even believe this is real. No one would be so stupid.

Trazzletoes · 19/10/2012 20:37

Flogging yes, Katie Price did exactly this to her DD. which is another good reason not to do it.

But the risk of a serious burn is MUCH more important. You know YABVU.

Mintyy · 19/10/2012 20:37

Actually I agree LPH.

Northernlurkerisbehindyouboo · 19/10/2012 20:38

I think the OP's probably got the message now and is doubtless crying behind a cushion having hurled the GHDs from the window.

Op - I agree that this is not a great plan for continued baby hair care but no harm done so don't fret.

marriedinwhite · 19/10/2012 20:38

Removes tongue from cheek Grin. Of course it's bloody inappropriate. My 14 year old doesn't straighten her hair or slavver on slap. She does have blonde hair to dye for though Envy

Fakebook · 19/10/2012 20:40

You're burning her hair everytime you use it.
