AIBU to be a tad [hmm] about my neighbours new car?

First off, this is absolutely NOT a benefits bashing thread.

I am probably BVU and this will show me up to be a nasty, mean spirited and bitter aul crone, BUT my neighbours just took delivery of a brand new car today- (think 3 letter, premium marque) - which they receive AFAIK through the motibility scheme. (Where I live this is very common practice.) Neither of them work and presumably receive benefits and HB. They definitely rent their house as we know the owner.

My DH and I were both high earning professionals before the recession hit and paid a very considerable sum for our own house, unfortunately we were both made redundant (within weeks of each other) several years ago and have fought tooth and nail to keep our home (both working very low paid unskilled jobs, taking in lodgers and DH moving away for a year to retrain.)

Obviously we are very fortunate to have been able to hold on to our home but it has been an incredibly tough few years- the pressures of redundancy, unemployment, and being on the breadline have taken a massive toll on our mental health, wellbeing and relationships- both with each other and family/friends.
My DH came home today soaked through after being out all afternoon in the pouring rain selling electricity door to door.

As I said upthread this is not a benefits bashing thread- I am fully aware that being on benefits is no picnic- DH and I spent 6 months on the dole and it was beyond grim, however AIBU to want to weep out of frustration seeing my neighbours new beemer parked in the driveway??

charlie, so what does she get it for?

saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 10:38

Anyway my point was that I am still caring day in day out for a severely disabled child and that the caring comes before work - work fits around the caring. But I no longer get CA.

If I ever become unable to care and ds1 has to go into resi it will cost the state £200 grand a year.

And all you get is abuse and and an assumption that you're in some way defrauding the system.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 10:38

Report them, if you really think they are committing benefit fraud report them. If they are committing it they will get a criminal record and their benefits taken off them, if they aren't things will carry on as they are.

It seems the perfect solution really and then the rest of us can stop defending ourselves as well.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 10:39

Like I said saintly, I don't see a queue of people lining up outside our houses offering to help, even for an hour Wink

Binkyridesagain · 19/10/2012 10:40

If you have other suspicions then enlighten us please because all you have shown yourself to be is jealous.

devientenigma · 19/10/2012 10:41

I know and yet another PA has gone AWOL on us, why does no one want to work or help DS??

saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 10:42

Oh they've upped it to 21 hours studying allowed - sure it used to be 15 although it was a few years ago.

Anyway officially my course was full time, although I wasn't there full time as I had to come home to meet the school bus, then work until late in the evening.

I know owlie - I have beat them off with a big stick there are so many people desperate to help out.

Mrsjay · 19/10/2012 10:42

Just cos you say it isn't benefit bashing doesn't make it so, If they have a sparkling new BMW they will have given up their benefit and are leasing it not that is anybodies business, I don't see why just because somebody who gets benefit the curtain starts twitching if they get anything new,

devientenigma · 19/10/2012 10:45

curtain twitching: my neighbours have tried everything to remove the disabled box painted on the road

Why? because it upsets the parking in the street !

DairyleaAndPickleOnAStick · 19/10/2012 10:46

Wannabe, just out of interest have you heard of the Dla being called the Derry living allowance? I assumed it was called this because of the relative ease with which it was claimed. Shocking if true.

OP posts:
saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 10:47

That sounds more like an assumption about the good people of Derry, rather than anything to do how easy it is to claim DLA.

Binkyridesagain · 19/10/2012 10:47

Have you researched anything for yourself or do you rely on tittle tattle to form your opinions?

IneedAsockamnesty · 19/10/2012 10:47

saintly and owl

you have to be in supervised study for 21 hours or more to lose ca but even if you study more than 21 hours it is still sometimes possible to get the underlaying entitlement that entitles you to hb.

also you should claim even if you just get underlaying as all it takes is a holiday change of earnings then you could get it for the times you arnt working or earning less than 100. its worth doing.
you can even report a change over the phone or via email now. its not a compleate change of circumstances just a change in income so not like doing a new claim each time.
owl they never ever tell you how to get more money that would be far to kind Grin

RinderThrillerNight · 19/10/2012 10:48

Absolutely agree with everything Parsing has said (great name btw).

devientenigma, my apologies. I misunderstood what you were trying to say. However, trying to play top trumps (come and be with us for the day to see the other side of disability) is neither helpful nor very nice. You do not know my circumstances, or my life and neither of us know whose life is worse. We never had time for DH's motobility car to be delivered. My husband's illness killed him too quickly. But going through the process of looking for the car was so important to him: he wanted to believe he would get better and we would be able to go out and about with our children in a car suitable for his needs.

OP, I do hope MNHQ let this thread stand. You clearly said that you know nothing of their finances other than they rent their home. They could be private tenants. They may not take a penny in benefits. You have made massive assumptions about someone else's life, morals and finances. So it is hardly surprised that you have taken a bashing on here.

Mrsjay · 19/10/2012 10:48

we Have 2 disabled parking spaces in our street and my god the trouble one of them causes the people moved house yet the space is still there a few neighbours want the space painted over Hmm

saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 10:49

Here you go have a look at it. Remember you'll need evidence to back up your claims, ideally in the form of reports from a medical professional. You'll also need to provide details of someone official DWP can contact to check on your claims.

Binky. Let me get this straight- you want me to redeem myself of the "jealousy"I have shown by posting a list of reasons why I believe my neighbours are committing benefit fraud? Wow.

OP posts:
RyleDup · 19/10/2012 10:51

Well, if you want the motorbility car perhaps you would like the disability to go with it. My husband is entitled to one of those. He has terminal cancer? Would you like that too?

Thought not.

devientenigma · 19/10/2012 10:51

actually Rider, I am not playing top trumps, that would be an easy win knowing my background. However I was only showing another view of disability, as for it being helpful, well it would be very helpful to me and others. Like I said if you knew our life you wouldn't be wishing it on your worst enemy.

Binkyridesagain · 19/10/2012 10:51

Don't forget all that money you had to lay out in bribes to get the professionals on side MrsDeVere

IneedAsockamnesty · 19/10/2012 10:52

dairy perhaps you are under that impression because you are not able to see beyond the gov agenda hype or read between the lines of the daily fail?

or perhaps its because deep down inside you really do resent and feel jealious of people who you think are underserving of support.

saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 10:52

sockreturning - the problem is I cannot predict when I will be paid. My business is paid via big businesses so I submit an invoice, then wait. I might get paid in a time when I am not working.

Also we are going to be paying off a tax credits overpayment (THEIR mistake, and yes I know that therefore we shouldn't have to pay it back - gave up on that one) for years and year, I honestly couldn't cope with a CA claim going wrong as well. I'd rather not bother. Have DP paperwork and arguments coming out of my ears already.

devientenigma · 19/10/2012 10:53

apologies if that come over harsh, I can understand what you mean, just glad you got my views also

Binkyridesagain · 19/10/2012 10:54

Yep why not, you've decided they are guilty, you posted it in a public forum, show us your evidence.
