AIBU to be a tad [hmm] about my neighbours new car?

First off, this is absolutely NOT a benefits bashing thread.

I am probably BVU and this will show me up to be a nasty, mean spirited and bitter aul crone, BUT my neighbours just took delivery of a brand new car today- (think 3 letter, premium marque) - which they receive AFAIK through the motibility scheme. (Where I live this is very common practice.) Neither of them work and presumably receive benefits and HB. They definitely rent their house as we know the owner.

My DH and I were both high earning professionals before the recession hit and paid a very considerable sum for our own house, unfortunately we were both made redundant (within weeks of each other) several years ago and have fought tooth and nail to keep our home (both working very low paid unskilled jobs, taking in lodgers and DH moving away for a year to retrain.)

Obviously we are very fortunate to have been able to hold on to our home but it has been an incredibly tough few years- the pressures of redundancy, unemployment, and being on the breadline have taken a massive toll on our mental health, wellbeing and relationships- both with each other and family/friends.
My DH came home today soaked through after being out all afternoon in the pouring rain selling electricity door to door.

As I said upthread this is not a benefits bashing thread- I am fully aware that being on benefits is no picnic- DH and I spent 6 months on the dole and it was beyond grim, however AIBU to want to weep out of frustration seeing my neighbours new beemer parked in the driveway??

No, you're quite right OwlLady, I know none of it is free (I have a disabled DS too), I was more aiming at the people who perceive it all to be free but should have said "it isn't free but so what if it was" kind of thing Smile.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 17:11

sorry :)

are people jealous about guide dogs too do you think?

Popumpkin · 19/10/2012 17:13

I'm sure there are some who are. I mean, they use pedigree labradors quite often do you know how much they cost? Wink

SoleSource · 19/10/2012 17:13

Yes they are Owl. Yes they are sigh.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 17:20

omg are you serious, they really are? :( dd has a therapy dog at her school, I wonder whether the lower school next door is jealous?

zebrafinch · 19/10/2012 17:22

I was thinking what I would do when my DS is no longer able to sit and the motability van lease runs out. Am now serioulsy considering the goat and cart option.^^. DS can lie down in the cart with pillows and I can walk beside leading the goat. At least I can get him out of the house that way and I will save time mowing the front lawn. How much do goats cost?

IneedAsockamnesty · 19/10/2012 17:22

no we dont still live there, im very very lucky because i live between 2 houses 1 that i have to keep(due to the luck coming with responsability) but the other is totally mine to do with as i please so we sold up and moved pronto taking a massive loss on the house for a very quick sale.

it was a shame as the area used to be tollerant but after that and reports of a local man being tipped out of his wheelchair by thugs we just wanted to get away pronto, you would be surprised at just how many people feel hate towards people who are different.

OwlLady · 19/10/2012 17:32

you can get goats from the rspca and rescue places, so it's most probably a viable option, though goats from such places usually have special needs

I am glad you were able to move sock, how awful :( i wont ask where it was because you need your privacy, but I always think of that poor woman in poole who was on that rosa monks program and was the victim of abuse because her son had cerebral palsy :( it's absolutely mindless. Intolerant and ignorant

zebrafinch · 19/10/2012 17:44

Thanks owl will look into it

zebrafinch · 19/10/2012 19:15

sock
Am shocked about what happened to your DS

expatinscotland · 19/10/2012 20:56

I can't think of a single person who qualifies for a motability car, and I know quite a few now thanks to DD1, who wouldn't trade it and all the benefits going to have their health or their child's health. What a stupid thing to be envious of. Drop in the ocean compared to the Phil Greens and crooked MPs fleecing for tens of thousands.

I'd much rather live in a tent, a campervan, whatever than have had that child go through what she did.

Then you always get the cretins on threads like this, 'Well, I didn't mean kids with cancer.'

Yeah, you did, because you really don't know what someone's going through when you see them in that car.

Ever spent a lot of time around someone who is profoundly autistic or whose child is? Or has CP, CF, a heart condition, any one of numerous conditions, many of them life-threatening and/or life-limiting, spent a day with a such a person and then grumbled about having to pay a mortgage?

GhostofMammaTJ · 19/10/2012 21:13

Pickled- I guess I didn't have a point and just posted without thinking. As I said in my op my dh came in after spending the afternoon knocking doors in the pouring rain trying to flog electricity which is incredibly tough and soul destroying work and it breaks my heart to see him leaving in he morning with his flask and returning exhausted and in despair about our situation. Meanwhile my neighbour who walks with a stick in public but laid his own patio over the summer took delivery of his shiny new 3 series. So I lost the rag and posted. So fucking shoot me.

I know a disabled man who would rather lay a patio over a few weeks than ask someone to do for him!! He is 74, he claims disability and gets a car and he fucking deserves all he gets.

PickledFanjoCat · 19/10/2012 21:45

As an aside a mate of mine sells electricity door to door. He earns good money and likes getting out.

It's not fit everyone but at least he has something and it's hardly breaking rocks in Siberia either.

I know plenty if people doing jobs they would rather not at the moment but you know this recession will end. And when it does people will still be disabled. And deserve extra help from society.

IneedAsockamnesty · 19/10/2012 22:26

zebra he now uses it to impress girls its quite a large scar he tells them it was a shark attack Grin

owl funnyly enough i used to live not far away from poole.

threesocksonathreeleggedwitch · 19/10/2012 22:32

oh ffs now we have the man who can lay his patio....

my dd is severely disabled
she will never walk, never run, never crunch her feet through leaves...
run through the waves.
leave the frist footprints in new snow.

she has a mobility WAV, and people are fucking jealous of people like her.

what the flying fuck.
really
??

devientenigma · 19/10/2012 23:15

not at all

mymatemax · 19/10/2012 23:25

My young friend has just taken delivery of a brand new adapted merc. People assumed he upgraded his motability ford focus. In fact what has happened is the compensation payout he was awarded 7yrs ago for the loss of usebof his legs & thevpartial loss of use of his varms has finally been paid after years of being contested by insurance firms.
He does not claim any other benifits because despite devastating injuries he holds down a part time job.
He had "scrownger" scratched on his car.
Assumptions can be very wrong.
Btw he was 14yrs old &:waiting at a bus stopvwhen hit by a motorcycle.

PickledFanjoCat · 19/10/2012 23:28

How disgusting max. Can't believe people can be such total dicks.

threesocksonathreeleggedwitch · 19/10/2012 23:28

that is so shit.
but tbh when I see posts like the op's you can see how sick some views are
