Leaving the baby on the car whilst you collect your older DC from school - would you?

I was chatting to one of the other Mums whose son is in the same class as my DD1. We both have new babies: her DD is 7mo and mine is just 6mo.

We were talking about how getting the babies out of the car can wake them, which can be a pain. "Oh, that's why I leave 7mo in the car. I can't be doing with the hassle. I know I take a risk, but ..."

"Do you think she's safe?" Asked I (before really thinking)

"Well, I think she's safe" Said the other Mum.

The car park is round the corner from the class. You turn a corner and cannot see it. I'm usually in for 5-10 minutes collecting my DD.

AIBU to think there's no way on this earth I'd leave my sleeping baby alone in the car?

I might have considered doing it until a recent local story of 2 under 3's burning to death in a car parked out side a friend's house. The mum didn't want to wake them as she was only staying 5 mins, locked them in car which wouldn't unlock once fire had started. The make of car has now been recalled due to a window switch that had potential to cause a fire. Bit late for the poor children. I would never ever risk it now, you just never know.

MrsReiver · 17/10/2012 16:31

No. The other week there was a horrible accident outside DS' school, someone was going far too fast round and corner and took out 3 parked cars belonging to parents collecting children from the nursery. What could have happened if babies had been left in the car makes my blood run cold.

bishboschone · 17/10/2012 16:31

What happened if they coughed and choked .. ?? I wouldn't and I'm fairly laid back . Also ds screams when I go out of sight !!

PosieParker · 17/10/2012 16:34

No way.

zeldapinwheel · 17/10/2012 16:39

I've tried to do a link to the news article but stupid phone won't let me but if u google ' lower early car fire deaths' you can read it. Should be enough to put anyone off ever leaving a child in a car.

MrsReiver · 17/10/2012 16:43

Here is is Zelda.

Warning - this is not a nice story.

DesperatelySeekingPerfection · 17/10/2012 16:44

Definitely not.

Abduction wouldn't be high on my lists of why not, more them waking up alone, choking, in the summer the car would be boiling, potential faults on the car etc etc.

It is just a silly thing to do. Surely if they are in an infant carrier then you don't need to wake them? If they were that tired they would just stay asleep whether being carried or put into a pushchair.

girliefriend · 17/10/2012 16:47

Oh god that story is horrendous Sad I have left dd in the car sleeping but only if I can see the car, if it was round the corner I wouldn't tbh.

MayTheOddsBeEverInYourFavour · 17/10/2012 16:49

I would never contemplate doing this, and I am a fairly relaxed parent

alice298 · 17/10/2012 16:56

Ooooh well. I have done it only when I can see the car. I do have a friend who leaves her 8 month old sleeping in the house while she takes her son to nursery. The nursery is 6 houses down from hers, so she is back in the house within 7 minutes. I would do the same myself because it is during the baby's lunch sleep and I can't imagine much could happen in 7 minutes ... Safer or less safe than car?

dikkertjedap · 17/10/2012 17:02

Never ever. Only yesterday there was a story of a car being stolen with a sleeping baby in it (on BBC website). Might be rare, but it clearly does happen.

I would simply not take the risk.

Vickles · 17/10/2012 17:09

At the end of the day, we're all different, and take these risks..... That's life!
Mostly, they'll be fine... But, there are do good ers out there, and they call the police. It happened locally here. I've seen and heard other do gooders report a baby in the car to the Customer Service desk, and they put a call out for the owner of a ..... car, registration number...., can you come to the desk please! I don't know what happened next, but people mostly really frown upon it, as in the majority. I just wouldn't risk it, the consequences are too big.

MrsKeithRichards · 17/10/2012 17:11

Not out of sight and you can't park anywhere near my school so no. It's a pain sometimes, my baby is 6m but it's got to be done. I use a sling a lot and a big golf umbrella.

MrsKeithRichards · 17/10/2012 17:14

Alice she shouldn't be doing that, the fact it's habitual is wrong.

She should put the baby to sleep in a buggy for that nap.

I leave him to pay for petrol, have ran into shops (ie local coroner shop) etc, I'm not a crazy but she needs to rethink her routine.

alice298 · 17/10/2012 17:26

Do you think? Why do you think the house for 7 min is more dangerous than a car? (not arguing by the way, just interested). It is once a week as the other days someone is in the house with the baby. I've heard both ways ... maybe I am too chillax??

janflan · 17/10/2012 17:28

People leave their young children in the car at ds's school all the time and i don't like it at all. The car park is not visible from the playground so they can't even see them and will be gone for at least 10mins.

My main worry would be them being sick and choking.

I remember as a child walking through a car park with my Mum and there was a girl of about 3 alone in a car. She'd managed to let the hand brake off and the car was rolling down the hill. A few men ran over and managed to stop the car, open the door and put the hand brake back on. The girl was crying her eyes out and the Mum came back to the car and started shouting at the men for trying to take her daughter.

A couple of months ago i was going into the co op which is on a very busy main road with a too small very busy car park. I noticed a girl probably younger than 2 get out of a car and start walking towards the road! I stopped her and luckily 2 community support officers walked past so they went and found her Mum!

I used to work in a shop on a busy main road. One day a woman came in and i was serving her when we heard an almighty bang from outside. A car had hit her car and it was now half way down the road with her 2 young children in it.

MrsKeithRichards · 17/10/2012 17:33

How about not leaving a baby alone for 7 minutes?

valiumredhead · 17/10/2012 17:36

No I wouldn't, not because I would be afraid of them getting snatched but I's be more worried about them waking up alone and frightened or another car bashing into mine.

valiumredhead · 17/10/2012 17:36

I'd

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 17/10/2012 17:40

No I wouldn't. Not ever, I never even left them to pay for petrol (although I do now they're older).

dh walked passed a car on the school run once and heard a baby crying from inside. :(

SucksToBeScaryMe · 17/10/2012 17:40

I would, and do. She is in sight and just fine.

nannyof3 · 17/10/2012 17:47

There was a spate of attempted baby left in car abductions in my area ...

Why would anyone do this ??????

valiumredhead · 17/10/2012 17:49

The other reason I would never do it is because as a nanny I would be sacked for doing it - and quite rightly so.

mumtocuddlebundle · 17/10/2012 17:49

Out of sight would be against the law?

valiumredhead · 17/10/2012 17:50

There is no law mum bizarrely but you could be seen as putting them at risk.
