It's all just so lovely. Really please John won.

I don't think John's family were unpleasant, it's probably just their way. Some families show love by slagging each other off. John made more than one caustic comment himself over the course of the series so I'm sure he's just like his Mum and sister in that regard.

BupcakesAndHaunting · 17/10/2012 14:10

His mum and sister were like the Ugly Sisters from Cinderella (not in looks but in personality) and John was like Cinders :( :( :(

squoosh · 17/10/2012 14:14

Me too Jodie, except that my outrage has now subsided into a gnawing resentment Grin

I got a bit misty eyed when Brendan was discussing his family reunion.

sleepyhead · 17/10/2012 14:16

Did anyone else think that John's mum didn't really look that pleased that he'd won?

I reckon she's desperate for him to be a shit-hot lawyer and was hoping he'd crash & burn so that he'd knock the baking on the head.

squoosh · 17/10/2012 14:17

Apparently the Cordon Bleu course John wants to do costs £27,000! That's a heck of a lot of cream buns.

BupcakesAndHaunting · 17/10/2012 14:19

In the bit where John's family were being unsupportive twats, the voiceover said "John's mum is hoping that he will be a hotshot lawyer" or something to that effect.

sleepyhead · 17/10/2012 14:22

£27000 ??? Shock Shock

Ok, I'm with his mum then. He needs to lawyer up for a good few years to afford that.

Me thinks they saw him coming...

I'm willing to place a large bet that yes, John is gay.

PostBellumBugsy · 17/10/2012 14:25

I have loved this show so much, but have to confess I didn't think it was blub worthy. I was surprised John won, as I thought it would be Brendan. Don't know what happened to James, he had a really bad final bake-off. still fancy him though

CockyPants · 17/10/2012 14:29

Paul Hottiewood, come forth and feel my buns

Brendan gave me the chills, there was something very 'dead body under the patio' about him..........I will add that I'm sure he is lovely in real life and it was just bad editing.....maybe.

Really liked John, I couldn't work out if his mum and sis were just being typical Northern miserable twats and joking or if there was something deeper going on.....I will add again that I come from cynical Northern stock a la Antony/Jim Royal.

I thought Brendan did very well in the partner stakes! Nice work cake meister.

QueefLatina · 17/10/2012 14:59

WRT John's family. I agree that they may bond over the piss take. My family are like this and it sometimes shocks people but doesn't bother me. I would feel uncomfortable with being told how proud they were of me all the time.

John did come out with a bitchy comment about his mum not even being a size 10 when she was born so hardly an innocent!

So glad he won as I was team John from the start. It seems like some contestants had their disasters shown more often on screen as they all had negative feedback when it came to the judging.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 17/10/2012 15:58

Yeah, Northerners will know what I mean.

Our Antony is going to London.

Hahahahahh, what you going London for Lurch.....etc etc.

Ephiny · 17/10/2012 16:08

Interesting, I'm from the North too, so maybe that explains it Confused.

It's not that I wanted my parents to gush over my every achievement or go on about being proud of me etc, not at all, just would have been nice if they could have sometimes refrained from the sarcastic comments and negativity about everything I tried to do. Maybe that's just me though.

mumblecrumble · 17/10/2012 16:17

Our judgement was that James was really creative, Brendan had amazing ability but John had both.

Those final cakes - what was james thinking??? Not plannign that turkish delight disaster etc? And brendans cake, as other have been were simply not beautiful. I didn;t want to eat them.

Though johns family was dead didghy though but BBC editing could have eben off?

IKilledIgglePiggle · 17/10/2012 16:18

Ephiny I'm probably over generalizing, but my parents sound quite similar, everything a piss take or an excuse for a joke, mostly gentle ribbing.

I'm Mancunian but I haven't lived there for years and I don't plan on going back.

I love Northern people but I do think some can be quite cynical......like GBBO John' family.

Ephiny · 17/10/2012 16:27

There are good things about the North, but not enough to make me want to go back either!

John's mum/sister reminded me of my family, and not in a good way. That bit left me feeling pretty uncomfortable tbh.

Yes,Ephiny!! I so felt the same!! The smiling putdown that surely nobody could ever get upset about as it was just a joke and you so should lighten up,ffs Angry
