To think slings vs prams is a daft debate.....

crackcrackcrak · 15/10/2012 12:38

I have both so what do I know.....
But I have friends now almost at war about it. AIBU to think its just a personal preference based in ease of use (both) that's just been hijacked as a superior parenting choice?

tenthousand, ds is the sling refuser (hence him trying to bust out and hitting sisters with balloons), and he has been slung since day 1.

but as he beats up anyone in the pushchair next to him (i have 3 aged 3 and under) or behind him, my back is sometimes the safest place for others to stay out of his way lol.

LittleBearPad · 16/10/2012 09:26

I've got both. On London public transport the sling is practical but I love my cameleon more polishes north london yummy mummy credentials

theodorakis · 16/10/2012 09:26

Just remembered on Gavin and Stacey where Nessa is wearing baby Neil on her back "so I can smokes".
I defy anyone to give that reason at a meet!

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:27

grrr @ the bottle feeding judgment. i have breastfed all of mine for as little as 2 weeks to over 2years, dependant on child and situation. anyone giving hassle to mums who use formula at MY slingmeet, will be shown the door! i ask that we all respect others parenting choices.

theodorakis · 16/10/2012 09:29

Misdee, I am neither a sling feeder or a small baby owner. I also live 3,000 miles away but I am drawn to your group, it sounds ace. Can I come with a tiny tears or a small dog?

LittleBearPad · 16/10/2012 09:30

Ginger BBs are meant to be bad / not so great (take your pick) for a baby's pelvis as all their weight is held their. Ergos, wrap slings etc are wider under their hips and this is apparently a "good thing". I like wider ones because it makes my DD feel less heavy as her weight is spread out.

theodorakis · 16/10/2012 09:30

sling wearer not feeder although I believe they are organic.

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:31

lol. tiny tears freaks me out. small dog is welcome, though i may steal it, as been trying to persude dh to let me have another dog to keep furboy (ralph the doodle) company

theodorakis · 16/10/2012 09:33

My Nigerian friend says she used to use a tablecloth for hers, up to 5 years old. When she left Nigeria for the first time and went to live in the US she used to get hassled by people telling her to use a buggy, "this isn't africa y'know!"

mercibucket · 16/10/2012 09:35

I liked my sling meets. We admired each others slings (consumerism at its best), ate cake and nattered. The nice bit was that we were all slightly non-mainstream in one way or another and it was very relaxing to be somewhere where that was ok. So someone would bf a 3 year old, someone else would bring their 12 year old home edder, someone else would be feeding their vegan son, someone else using washable nappies
Sorry, but at your average toddler group you'd be crucified by a lot of mums for that, either to your face or behind your back
It was a 'safe space' with cake
I don't remember any looking down on anyone, after all, we all did things differently, so one would be ff, one using dispies etc. We all had a couple of prams. There probably would be things that would be looked down on, maybe cc and definitely she who must not be named

Shesparkles · 16/10/2012 09:43

I only used a sling when my 2 were tiny.

What I can't fathom though, is when you're on holiday and have no car, how you're meant to carry your 12 pack of local beer back from the supermarket in a sling? I'm willing to be proved wrong, but I'm just not seeing it

leaves thread

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:45

i am slightly non-mainstream. this is the point where i admit we use cloth nappies, went to Big Camp (natural mamas forum meet), am a bit AP, and home ed 6 kids Grin

but then i've always done things my own way Wink

Sling Meet is my little safe haven in a way. I dont look down on others who do it differently, at the end of the day, we are all parents trying to do the best in our ways for our families.

and its a darn sight easier to get three littles out and about with the use of slings than the triple buggy :)

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:46

shesparkles, surely it'll be easy to get the beer on your back [considers trying to see if i can sling dh beer onto my back. Hmm ]

LadyMargolotta · 16/10/2012 09:49

Misdee - do you have six children now?

INeedThatForkOff · 16/10/2012 09:50

There is an earlier post on this thread (can't find it now) in which a poster says that her dc's orthopaedic paediatrician doesn't think BB carriers cause a problem and in fact uses one herself. I won't be replacing mine!

Actually I sometimes feel like a Bad Parent because I don't spend hours, weeks and months exploring parenting philosophies. I just do it. That said, it all seems to be ok. Not perfect, but ok.

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:53

i do :) 5 dd's and one ds. pics of dd1,2,3, 4 and ds and pic of dd5 on my profile :) dd5 was superspeedy delivery which took us by surprised

LadyMargolotta · 16/10/2012 09:55

Congratulations on dd5!

misdee · 16/10/2012 09:56

thank you :)

PinkFondantFancy · 16/10/2012 09:59

mrskeithrichards so anyone with a Stokke is a twat eh? That's right, I bought it because I'm a twat, not because the handbar is nice and high for tall people....

hiviolet · 16/10/2012 10:25

PMSL at Grazing's arrival at "crunchy lady's woo house" Grin

crackcrackcrak · 16/10/2012 11:35

It's not what stokke look like - its what they do! My mum lives in a flat at the bottom of v steep, numerous steps. Her lovely neighbour has 2 dd's under 6. She shelled out a small mortgage for a stokke because they do this clever thing where they go from 4 wheels to 2 so you can bump them down the steps Grin. I tried to get dd plus my buzz up the steps alone once - it was fecking dangerous and I never attempted it again.

I like the idea of slings, in fact over the last 8 years i have bought 4. I end up feeling like i need a lie down after 5 minutes!. I do walk alot since we dont have a car so perhaps if my journeys were shorter it wouldnt be so bad!.
I bought a sort of lie flat one a while ago as I was assured Id be able to breastfeed walking along - this would have only worked if i had boobs as long as my arm i think - me and slings dont get on.

It is a silly debate - I care little about how other people carry babies!

theodorakis · 16/10/2012 12:53

I'm not even bothered about the slings, I just want to be in the group of nice people!
