To think slings vs prams is a daft debate.....

crackcrackcrak · 15/10/2012 12:38

I have both so what do I know.....
But I have friends now almost at war about it. AIBU to think its just a personal preference based in ease of use (both) that's just been hijacked as a superior parenting choice?

Funnys - the sling meet was basically a good idea because you could try out and hire different slings without buying them. That's great because it's hard to find one to suit and they're very expensive. But it was the attitude and atmosphere that was so incredibly odd - the woman who ran the meet was truly scary.

McHappyPants2012 · 15/10/2012 13:33

never got on with a sling, made my soliders and back hurt.

CaptainHetty · 15/10/2012 13:33

I use both. Don't really have a strong preference for one over the other, they're both useful for different things - I prefer the sling when I'm using public transport because my pram is quite bulky and gets in the way of other people. I'm certainly not militant about the use of either of them, don't see the point!

HoneyDragon · 15/10/2012 13:37

I use neither. I put my children in a chariot made from milk crates and pulled by a pack of weasels. I judge users of both slings and pushchairs as I am very superior.

Laquitar · 15/10/2012 13:39

There is time and place for both imo. It depends where are you going i.e. stairs, bags to curry, time of day etc. It is not an ideology. And it doesn't define you, wtf with the -er?

MrsKeithRichards · 15/10/2012 13:39

I hope they are free range weasels or I will judge.

CailinDana · 15/10/2012 13:39

Pshaw Honey - I can't believe that you think enslaving animals to serve your children makes you superior. I had a zip put in my abdomen so I can carry my DS in my womb - his attachment is excellent, even if I do have to wipe entrail juice off him ten times day.

MrsGeologist · 15/10/2012 13:40

Us crunchy maybe a bastardisation of cwtchy?

YANBU OP I've got both, and they both have their place. Some people just need to mellow out a little.

Laquitar · 15/10/2012 13:40

I meant in baby-wear-er.

R2PeePoo · 15/10/2012 13:41

I find people who evangelise about anything to be utterly tedious. They generally have no concept of the fact that other people are different from them and have different needs/concerns.

I had a pushchair for DD, then a wrap sling and pushchair for DS. Both met my needs at different times. Now thankfully both DC are both capable of self-propulsion which is 100% better than both slings and pushchairs.

GOLDENLiquidAngel · 15/10/2012 13:42

Cailin not sure whether to or at entrail juice!

HoneyDragon · 15/10/2012 13:42

A zip????? How common, can you not afford natural wood toggles?

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/10/2012 13:43

I see Cailin I think it would be very useful to try out a number of different prams too as they are expensive and oft heavier than one expects.

Actually I don't care about any of this anymore. I have just officially moved on from the 'baby stage' what with getting rid of the cot and changing table, so you all go ahead and sling to your hearts desire

HoneyDragon · 15/10/2012 13:43

R2 you let you children walk? Shock

CailinDana · 15/10/2012 13:45

Entrail juice is no laughing matter Golden - its smell is very comforting to DS and ensures that he develops the right emotional core for becoming a vegetarian indigo child.

Honey I think you will find that numerous studies have shown that wood toggles interfere with a child's chi and that the purity of metal is the best way to guarantee that your male child will be a goatee-wearing yoga bore by the age of 21.

R2PeePoo · 15/10/2012 13:45

Yes of course. How else would they pull my chariot?

Indith · 15/10/2012 13:46

I'm crunchy when covered in cake and biscuit crumbs does that count?

Life is far too short for fighting about it and being all "superior".

You forgot the forward vs parent facing debate by the way should you be a terrible enough parent to use a pushchair.

I have always used both depending on circumstances. I had a double at one point because frankly I had times when I didn't want either of them attached to me (PND) so sod the sling plus buggy thing. I mostly co-sleep but can't wait to throw the baby out and have my bed back because while I love co sleeping with little babies once they get big and wriggly I want them out Grin. I bf but have been known to use formula rather than express Shock. I am clearly a failure.

MaryZed · 15/10/2012 13:46

I had a forward facing pushchair, not even a carry-cot thingy or a travel system.

You know, a simple, foldable, McClaren one.

And just the one pushchair for the three of them.

I am a baaaad mother [proud]

MrsGeologist · 15/10/2012 13:46

Well I win all of you cause I've got a big bag of lentils here and I intend to deftly weave them into a magic carpet (with quinoa tassles) on which I can cart my precious cherubs.

MaryZed · 15/10/2012 13:47

Oh, and when I did let them out, I used reins to tie the older one to the pushchair to stop it running away.

scarletforya · 15/10/2012 13:51

Ah ha ha! Now I feel inferior because I don't zip my baby back into my womb with a wooden toggle!

I got suckered in by this stupid sling wearing business, I spent ?90 on a 'Je Porte Mon Bebe' wrap sling. FFS! Total. Waste. Of. Money. You'd need to set aside a couple of hours a day to wrap yourself in the blimmin thing. So impractical. Tried to sell it back to the lentil weavers on a baby wearing site but no bugger wants it! Angry

I don't know what I was thinking, I drive everywhere. The baby hates it as it's too claustrphobic. I'd be slightly embarassed to be seen in it too.

crackcrackcrak · 15/10/2012 13:51

Pmsl at the weasel chariot. Might throw that in to the debate........

OP posts:
bigkidsdidit · 15/10/2012 13:51

I cafrry DS everywhere in the sling still (he's 22 mo) and I love it.

DH refuses to and uses the pushchair.

I'm going to have to divorce him aren't I

HoneyDragon · 15/10/2012 13:51

Life's not too bloody short! I will devote my entire time to proving I am the most superior and brilliant parent EVER.

R2 ..... Well that's fine, that's character building.

InherentlyCantankerous · 15/10/2012 13:55

crack - sounds like you live near me, I know someone who describes themselves as 'crunchy' Confused

I used both a pram and a sling, easier for first 6 months to cart a baby around in a sling but after that I mostly used the pram and had to listen to the 'baby wearers' in the area telling me that I could still carry my 5yo so why wasn't I carrying the baby?! I wouldn't dream of telling another person how to parent.
