I've had an infected foot and toenails for years
antibiotics - nyada
topical creams - nyada
THEN
discovered garlic
.
cut a clove across and rub the oil into the skin / nail / sore bit
wash off after an hour (otherwise it stings like billyo)
.
foot nearly fully healed

Thanks. I'll try that!

EdithWeston · 14/10/2012 18:13

And in time for Hallowe'en to...

Funnylittleturkishdelight · 14/10/2012 18:13

How long does it take to work?

Sounds interesting!

5Foot5 · 14/10/2012 18:13

Does anyone else remember the woman who tried to cure threadworms by sticking a clove of garlic up her a*

BestIsWest · 14/10/2012 18:14

Did you try Vick? Never tried it myself but read others on here swear by it.

Garlic amazing stuff though.

MsNobodyAgain · 14/10/2012 18:14

Can you be more specific? Infected with what?

I've got a DS with quite severe SN and he has a fungal nail infection on his thumb. Can't put lotions on it because he will freak or stick the treated nail in his mouth.

Vicks - yup - held it steady but not cured

Infected with what : if only I knew. SO MANY antibiotics did not touch it, nor did antivirals. After three years you head sideways. Garlic was worth a ret and it worked.

Whole cloves are useless - the crushed oil is the active ingredient

I cried when I read that thread. Outlined it to DH and got the Hmm face. He has no sense of humour :o

JustFabulous · 14/10/2012 19:02

I used garlic in my mash today and it was lovely. I thought it was going to be that kind of thread BlushGrin.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/10/2012 19:38

:-)
Garlic to eat is great ....
BUT my research backed up by empirical evidence (and I am VERY aware that the multiple of anecdote is NOT evidence)
garlic oil is a MONSTER fungicide
and many dermatitis outbreaks are exacerbated by secondary fungal (unidentified species : no money in finding out) infections.
It was worth a try.
It worked.

Manky toenails, flaky skin between toes, that kinda thing. Worth a go - but DO NOT put into the bolognese after ...

OP posts:
Melty · 14/10/2012 19:44

How often did you use it, and how long has it taken to have an effect?

ScorpionQueen · 14/10/2012 19:44

I put lots of garlic in my sauce for chicken today with the intention of fighting winter bugs. The DDs thought it was to deter vampires.
:)

IneedAsockamnesty · 14/10/2012 19:44

nothing to add really apart from the thread worm lady would have been much better by eating dried cucumber seeds

DeadQODy · 14/10/2012 19:45

What about ringworm? (Week 4 of treatment, 3rd type of cream....)

cocolepew · 14/10/2012 19:47

Manuka honey put on manky skin* is also very good, it's anti-bacterial.

*not a medical term.

JustFabulous · 14/10/2012 19:52

That is why I put it in the mash as I thought it helped fight infection.

PrincessSymbian · 14/10/2012 20:05

I can also recommend garlic for persistent vaginal infections. Sew a clove into a small muslin bag, making sure there is string like with a tampon, dunk into olive oil, leave in overnight and wake up infection free. Has worked for me every time I have used it.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 14/10/2012 20:12

I used raw garlic on tonsilitis once...three cloves, crushed and swallowed like medicne.

The next day, my lumpy infected tonsils were NORMAL! I took the garlic on the first day the infection showed up. I tell people to use it all the time and they go "Yuk no."

And carry on moaning. Pees me off.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/10/2012 21:48

All I can say is : Garlic is safe to eat. So rubbing onto an offending bit of skin is not likely to do you any harm.
Worth a try.
BUT
if it starts to burn, be ready to wash it off.

I had so many antibiotics that I got black spots on my teeth.
Garlic worked as the underlying infection was clearly fungal.

And yes Honey (any honey, do not fall for the expensive manuka marketing guff) is antibacterial - because its a concentrated sugar solution ....

Need specifics.
Have garlic, have poorly bad toenail.
Explain with details please.
What exactly do you do?

TheSkiingGardener · 14/10/2012 21:52

So do you do this daily? And for how long?

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 14/10/2012 21:53

ahh I was hoping it was garlic in cooking too.. I put so much in the tea tonight that when three of us enter the playgound tomorrow we will cut a swathe through the crowds as they back off in horror.. (or faint from the smell) Blush

will remember the garlic tip for feet...

QuintessentialShadows · 14/10/2012 21:55

I would not put my toes, nor toenails into the bolognaise! Shock

Latara · 14/10/2012 21:55

A Ukrainian friend told me to: ''Eat a whole BULB of raw garlic at the first sign of a cold. Then another garlic bulb before you go to bed. In the morning the cold will be gone.'' But it will take a week for garlic breath to fade.
