I've had an infected foot and toenails for years
antibiotics - nyada
topical creams - nyada
THEN
discovered garlic
.
cut a clove across and rub the oil into the skin / nail / sore bit
wash off after an hour (otherwise it stings like billyo)
.
foot nearly fully healed

Latara, you sure she was not Transylvanian rather than Ukrainian?

I use lots of garlic in cooking and have used it up my fanjo for thrush on numerous occasions (DW objects to the garlic breath it gives me though - who knew those two body parts were linked?). I love finding new uses for garlic.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/10/2012 21:59

skiing
peel clove of garlic.
slice off tip
rub on nail till the oil (stink) is clear
once or twice a day
nails are resistant so it'll take a while to show (during which I put nail varnish back on !)
On skin, twice a day, couple of days, healing should be obvious

5foot, I once looked up natural remedies for thrush and they recommended sticking a scored clove of garlic up your fanjo! Grin

QuintessentialShadows · 14/10/2012 22:00

I used to stick garlic cloves up my nose - against sinus infection.
Garlic cloves into my ears, against air infection, with onion ring slices on the outside, covered by cling film, to ensure NO onion/garlic vapours escaped....

debka · 14/10/2012 22:02

A Russian girl I lived with used to crush a few cloves of garlic, mix them with water, then snort it through her sinuses when she had a cold.

ike1 · 14/10/2012 22:09

I have stuck a clove up my fanjo before to cure thrush symptoms. It worked, But wierdly I could taste garlic in my mouth at the same time!!!!!

ike1 · 14/10/2012 22:09

Debka now that IS hardcore!

debka · 14/10/2012 22:13

She was a bit of a nutcase, you wouldn't mess with Olga!

MummysHappyPills · 14/10/2012 22:14

When I had a cold recently someone recommended cutting up a garlic clove, putting it on a teaspoon and swallowing it with water! It was foul, it gave me heartburn and I swear to god my farts stank of raw garlic! Blush

And I'm not even sure it got rid of my cold quicker! Don't get me wrong, I live garlic, but this was just too much! Grin

mathanxiety · 14/10/2012 22:16

Talkinpeace -- don't use nail polish if you're getting fungal infections. Your nails need to breathe.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/10/2012 22:17

Math
I know - but its SO ugly. I could not wear varnish for nearly 2 years because there was no 'surface' to put it on !
The nail is getting better as I'm clearing up the nail bed ...

Putting garlic in the chickens drinker is meant to be a natural wormer.

akaemmafrost · 14/10/2012 22:23

So to clarify this is a fungal nail infection you used this for?

ddubsgirl · 14/10/2012 22:26

garlic is good for allsorts of health issuses, garlic can also help diabetes but garlic thins the blood so if taking it alot check with gp first.

Latara · 14/10/2012 22:27

Haha, no, my garlic-bulb-eating-friend was definitely Ukrainian... but i do have 2 friends from Transylvania..... one looks a lot like Kate Beckinsale who starred in the Van Helsing film.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/10/2012 22:28

Not fungal nail infection.
Foot infection : as antibiotics, antivirals, surgery (yes really) and topical antiseptics did not whack it - but garlic did.
The nails are on top of the infected toes and grow slower than the skin ...

I've used raw garlic when I've had Mastitis three times. I had a couple of cloves chopped into small pieces and swallowed with orange juice, I think the 'recipe' was to have 8 cloves a day.

Who knows if it was co-incidence but I didnt have to resort to Anti Biotics ( dont have an issue with using them if really needed)

snice · 14/10/2012 22:34

to get rid of garlic breath you need to chew some parsley

IneedAsockamnesty · 14/10/2012 22:36

snice by the sounds of it if you bung some parsley up your fanjo that should also do the job Grin

leelteloo · 14/10/2012 22:37

I really really can't believe anyone would put garlic up their fanjo and even more can't believe anyone would sew a little garlic vag bag to do just that. There are very few thing I will insert in my fanjo and garlic certainly isn't one, doesn't matter how damned itchy it is.
Used to give garlic to my horse as a fly repellent though.

PrincessSymbian · 14/10/2012 22:43

Quite frankly, garlic is probably not the strangest thing I've shoved up my fango and sewing it into a bag is a sensible idea as it makes it easier to find, come morning when one wishes to remove it.
Oh and it works more effectively and is cheaper than canestan.

Yes, we should all eat it, and then everything'll taste fab and we won't smell anyone's halitosis. Good idea OP.
