To think there is very little family tv anymore?

I remember sitting round the box with my parents watching shows on weekend. Wanted to sit with dd1 tonight and watch something. Nothing much on and even xfactor starts and finishes very late.
Am I missing loads of good family shows? What do you watch?

I know when I was growing up, there were only 3 channels, so you watched what was on and didn't have the options that we all do today. You also watched what was on, when it was being aired, as there was no 'catch up', recording or Sky+. It kind of forced you into watching things together as it was that, or go upstairs (where there wasn't necessarily central heating, so not a great option!).
As to watching things together, I think it depends on the age and interests of your dc. Mine are older thatn yours (I presume from your reference to X-factor being on late) and we watch a lot more together now than we have over the last 10 years of so.
I do like 'Merlin' though, but - as it happens - tonight I watched it without a child in sight!

What about the nature programmes?
Or films?

When mine were younger, watching TV together, meant me watching their programmes with them though, rather than really having programmes that were designed for the whole family to watch together, a la 'Generation Game'.

We all watch strictly come dancing and then Merlin on a Saturday night

Nature stuff and Wipeout here. My DCs are in stitches at all the falling over on Wipeout Not so keen on Hammond myself .

we watched Doctor who well me and the DDS do but now there is nothing on I watch strictly dd2 comes in now and again to see the sparkles dds and DH watch Total wipeout which I hate , I think there is far to many channels now but with sod all on,

The things we watch as a family are Crystal Maze, Total wipeout, Tashekis (sp) Castle, You've been Framed, Robot Wars. We set them to sky+ then watch whenever we want. Don't know if they are any good for you as my DS's 5 and 2 seem to love watching other people falling over.

Can't stand all the weekend television... it's all cheesy and irritating. We tend to watch films.

Well when I was growing up, we had programmes like Black and White Minstrel Show, Benny Hill and Terry and June.

Great British Bake Off is now really the only family programme watched chez Scholes on a weekly basis. We will be bereft after the final on Tuesday. Have greatly enjoyed watching, armed with the book of this series and a list of things to bake at the weekend by the end of the programme.

DC are 15, 14 and 12, so University Challenge is good - we can usually answer at least one question each. DC1 and I watch Downton together and Friday Night Dinner, whilst we watched The Thick of It and Have I Got News for You with DC2 and DC3 on Saturday. They can cope with the swearing. QI tends to go down well too.

I vividly remember watching My Uncle Silas with my dad when I was on for a spell- I was about 10- he'd make me hide behind a cushion when the naughty bits came!

Total wipeout, Top gear, tour de france (when on). Wildlife shows, space shows & occassional univ challenge.

And dh has been known to become engrossed in gumball with the kids!

DSs 14 and 16. We all love the GB Bake Off, University Challenge and a few American Crime series such as Body of Proof.
I missed the first series of Homeland but it was re run on More4 just before series2. It had such great reviews that I sky + it at told the boys it was good. The three of us sat down to watch it and . On the third very graphic sex scene DS2 rolled his eyes and said enough!
I have watched the rest of the series alone

Oh and we all keenly await the new series of BBT.

Total wipeout. Dr Who and X Factor but we record it so we watch it earlier. We love Austrailian Masterchef too
