To think this wasn't a "crap tea"

GColdtimer · 11/10/2012 17:52

I had my dn today, sil has just picked her up and I told her what we had for tea. Her response was "oh she likes crap teas like that, not like our proper food"

I served (all homemade) cornflake chicken goujons, potato wedges, baby sweet corn, green beans and broccoli. Fruit and yoghurt for pudding.

I thought it was quite healthy.

I'd love to see what your SIL cooks at home, if she cooks that is. Kids just aren't into couscous, lentils and lemongrass.

Mrsjay · 11/10/2012 20:39

Sounds lovely the cook where I work makes cornflake nuggets for the kids they love it , your SIL is being an Idiot, what does she cook for tea that is so healthy and nutritious

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 11/10/2012 20:50

oh my goodness, how rude!

oh and thanks for the natural yogurt tip... now my egg allergic dd can have homemade stuff too! (if I can be bothered!)

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 11/10/2012 20:51

I think you need to make a point of being unavailable to feed her precious dd next time Wink

roses2 · 11/10/2012 21:08

I love cornflake chicken! It's one of my favorite meals and I have it every 7-10 days.

zipzap · 11/10/2012 21:17

Hope you're going to point out to sil next time she is rude about your dc being tricky to feed, that her dd is too - after all, you had planned to do salmon and she asked for something different!

Might at least wipe a bit of the smug smile off sil's face - I imagine she was being all smug about the 'crap tea' and 'dd being easy to feed' Grin

lovelyladuree · 11/10/2012 21:24

The thought of cornflakes on chicken is making me heave. I think the word should have been 'poncey' not 'crap'.

flow4 · 11/10/2012 21:36

How rude! It's a perfectly good meal; but more to the point, you fed her child, so she should be appreciative even if you'd made pizza and potato smiles Grin

Laquitar · 11/10/2012 22:20

I would tell her that dn washed it down with coke Grin just to see her face. And they had a bowl of sugar each for pudding.
And she loved the biscuits too.

QuintessentialShadows · 13/10/2012 10:32

Thank you Twofalls. Smile

Yesterday I was going to make turkey goujons for tea, and I did not have any eggs. Your thread inspired me to try use natural youghurt instead, and much to the childrens delight, I used scrunched up corn flakes rather than breadcrumbs. So, brushed with youghurt, coated in flour mixed with garam massala, coriander, black pepper and thyme, with cornflakes! I added more cornflakes whole on top when I was nearly done cooking them, so they had turkey goujons in crispy cornflakes, and they loved it!

simplesusan · 13/10/2012 10:46

Your sil sounds charming.
I would be tempted to reply next time you won't feed her.
How rude.

ZZZenAgain · 13/10/2012 10:51

I think it sounds fine

mosschops30 · 13/10/2012 11:00

Thats not a crap tea!

Crap teas in our house:
Pasty, beans and chips
Frozen battered fish, mushy peas and chips
Cheese and potato pie with beans
Pizza
Hot Dogs (out of a tin)

These meals are for days when there is no shopping in and no one can be arsed to cook.

Your SIL is very cheeky, id be over the moon if someone fed my dcs

snooter · 13/10/2012 11:17

From the OP I inferred that the the child doesn't like the 'proper food' but prefers 'crap teas' - poor little sod probably was glad to have a normal child-friendly meal rather than some cordon bleu grownup stuff.

Quadrangle · 13/10/2012 13:46

Not crap at all. Cornflake chicken is an Annabel Karmel recipe isn't it? She sounds bloody rude and ungrateful.

Quadrangle · 13/10/2012 13:50

sil always moans about her being difficult to feed when her dd will eat anything.

Many a child who will eat anything has later turned into a fussy eater who will only eat jam sandwiches!

TheEnglishWomanInTheAttic · 13/10/2012 13:52

"You don't need sauce with a proper dinner" is daft - bowl of (tinned) soup then? Pasta and (jar) pesto? Beans on toast? Are those better dinners than the meal involving fresh unprocessed meat and fresh veg which the OP cooked?

I might try doing cornflake chicken, making breadcrumbs takes ages as I don't have a blender and don't want to get one as I've a lack of worktop and cupboard space...

Scmaltzing, no doubt SS will let you know when they turn up on your doorstep to take your DCs away! Grin

We used to get sent all sorts of newspaper cuttings and the like from SIL, who lived overseas, about healthy eating for children, and how to get cheap vitamins, and the latest must-have wonder foods and the latest must-avoid horror foods... She didn't even have children. She stopped when DS1 went to visit her along with BIL and DN1, and DS1 was the tallest and healthiest of the lot of 'em. (Not to mention the sanest. But that's a whole other issue.)

YouMayLogOut · 13/10/2012 14:28

"oh she likes crap teas like that, not like our proper food"

Seriously? Unbelievable!

HoratiaWinwood · 13/10/2012 15:09

Now, see, I'd call that "crap tea" or "beige tea" but without deriding it or thinking it bad. We just tend not to distinguish between children's and adults' food chez Winwood. I acknowledge the homemadeness but children don't know the difference between Birds Eye and Auntie's Own.

But for SIL to say that to you makes her at best thoughtless and at worst rude and ungrateful.

HoratiaWinwood · 13/10/2012 15:14

My last post sounded judgier than I intended.

"Beige tea" or "crap tea" often appears on my meal planner. Doesn't mean I actually think it's crap. SIL may be tactless but that doesn't mean she thinks OP is a crap cook.

I get anxious feeding Other People's Children.

oldraver · 13/10/2012 15:19

Doesnt Ketchup count towards the 5 a day Wink

youarewinning · 13/10/2012 15:24

Your SIL sounds rude.

but I wonder if her comment actually relates to the fact she is being fussy and refusing mums homemade casseroles etc in favour of chicken nuggets etc. Maybe SIL just lumped popcorn chicken and cornflake chicken and homemade wedges an frozen wedges into the same catagory?

straighttohellymelly · 13/10/2012 15:32

Tea sounds lovely and healthy. She is loon. Feel free to feed my dds at a teatime of your choice...
