To wonder why year 9 sex education requires an ENTIRE DAY off timetable?

They are missing every lesson to have a sex education day. Every single lesson.

It seems a bit excessive to me given that they cover sex, contraception, STIs, and the like during SMCE lessons.

Or AIBU?

Is it vital that they have sex education from 8:30-3pm?

I'm not against the actually learning about sex Ed by the way, I just thought an entire day was a bit much.

Is it not pshe? so it will cover all sorts of issues on emotional health?

I am sure there is a good reason. Possibly they have visitors or people coming in from various agencies like the NHS to talk to them.

It does seem a bit excessive. I think sex ed should be an ongoing topic with your children at school and at home, not one talk and lets get it all out the way.

That's not necessarily what is happening though. As I said it could be an all day workshop involving visitors and speakers.

Yes phse is the same as SMCE at our school. And they cover the emotional side, sexualised behaviour, in appropriate behaviour during these lessons once a week.

Looking at the letter DS bought home, it does not appear there are any speakers. There may be workshops, it doesn't specify in the letter.

It's because they give plenty of time to talk to each other.

They'll discuss a concept, watch a video, play a game and then group into first individual sex groups and then mixed sex groups to discuss. There will be teachers on hand for private discussions too. Once they are happy that the children are happy, they'll move on.

Doing it in one big session gets all the laughing out of the way etc, so everyone can be mature and concentrate. Doing it individually is a nightmare because a lot of each session is lost by trying to lose that embarrassing factor.

Would you be happy if they had a whole day learning about road safety? I would. And I'd be delighted with a day on this topic too, something just as important for their safety - assuming they would continue to receive information throughout the year too.

This is a very good thing. I taught some PSHE, and have done youth work etc so doing sex ed didn't bother me and I was happy to have discussions about the topic. But most PSHE is not taught by specialists but by tutors or by random teachers who have a gap in their timetable. So many many people are teaching it who are uncomfortable and the result is the kids will mostly just watch videos and do a ten year old work sheet.

Pretty much every survey ever done finds Sex Ed teaching in school completely inadequate because of the reasons above and because there is not enough on relationships and the emotional side of things. Anything extra schools can do has to be a good thing.

Dd did not do this in year 9. I've never heard of a whole day off timetable for sex education and as I have never heard of it, I wondered if it was a bit excessive as they have been covering the same subject since year 7. That's all.

Well, perhaps the school think that this is an important topic that is worth using a whole day on. Perhaps they are making it into a big unusual day because there is more chance the kids will remember something than if it is ust a normal lesson? And what's wrong with repeating stuff throughout the curriculum? It helps you remember. Everything else gets repeated before exams only it's called revsion and is therefore acceptable. And I bet attendance is 100% that day.

In Denmark they have a whole week of it. In week 6 (6 is the same as sex in dansish) all the year 7s get a whole week of cross curricular education.

I read that as 9 year olds and thought whaaaat?

but when I was at school y9 was 13/14?

erm I think if its a one off then fine I remember my pshe was shit just citizenship.
