The crown has already said the title is lifelong therefore lapses upon death anyway. Technically he isn't "sir" anymore.

The grave next to my DNs in encased in concrete and he was buried at night by police as the poor mans family was in dispute over a will and manner of death and threatened to dig him up :(

TheSmallClanger · 09/10/2012 22:32

I expect the cemetery authorities didn't want any more rubber-neckers or vandals. It is a waste of their resources and unfair on other people who visit graves there.

Viviennemary · 09/10/2012 22:36

It said on the news it was out of respect to the victims and other visitors to the cemetery and public opinion. Which I think is quite fair and reasonable.

TalkinPeace2 · 09/10/2012 22:36

I review burial paperwork a lot - I find it highly unlikely that any grave is encased in concrete.

The tombstone is being removed to prevent vandalism of it and the cemetery as a whole

Glitterknickaz · 09/10/2012 22:36

"The coffin was later encased in concrete as a "security measure" amid speculation about its contents."

from here

rhondajean · 09/10/2012 22:39

I'm just gobsmacked at teh sheer volume of evidence and testimony that's appeared. Scotland yard can realise NOW that he was a dangerous predatory pedophile but not a scooby while he was actually alive and could answer for it?!

Whitecherry · 09/10/2012 22:39

So the headstone will eventually be put back as it is once this has all 'died down'?

Who has the authority to say the wording must be changed on the headstone? If anyone?

NorksAreMessy · 09/10/2012 22:39

ithink can you not speculate on any reasons yourself why it might be a good idea?

ithinkimightbegoingmad · 09/10/2012 23:01

olgaga i didnt know what the headstone said, when i wrote my OP..i have since found a news report which informs me of this

no norks i was a bit mystified. I thought of it as a kind of denying his existence Confused not honouring him in death kind of thing...which is why i thought the church would have had objections. I hadnt realised how vulgar his head stone was...and hadnt thought about vandalism...

olgaga · 09/10/2012 23:10

i didnt know what the headstone said, when i wrote my OP

Well whatever it said, did it really not occur to you that its very presence might be offensive to people whose loved ones are also buried there?

It didn't occur to you that someone might want to go there with a sledgehammer? Or at the very least some spray paint?

Blimey. Hmm

Whitecherry · 09/10/2012 23:11

I didn't know a thing about his headstone til I read this either!!

ithinkimightbegoingmad · 09/10/2012 23:17

i didnt think you could remove a headstone because the dead person is offensive...are muderers/rapists/child abusers buried in special places? Confused

no...vandalism hadnt really occurred to me...not in a grave yard. I think i thought people would have more respect for the other people buried in the grave yard and their families...as vandalising a headstone doesn't actually acheive anything. I also imagined there might be security i suppose. I think our local cemetries have some security due to vandalism

Whitecherry it's usually whoever manages the cemetery. Some have very strict rules as to size, colour and shape of headstone, the amount of words and whether a photo can be attached to it. I'm guessing that rules must be pretty relaxed based on the headstone they are removing. But then again no doubt rules were relaxed for 'Sir Jim' whilst they still thought he was a saint and that they were honoured to have him there. Hindsight eh?

As relaxed as our cemetery is that huge monstrosity wouldn't have been allowed. It's just too big and boastful. And I've read of others not letting people put Mam or Nan on headstones and only allowing Mother or Grandmother, which is pretty shitty.

Whitecherry · 09/10/2012 23:23

Bet they feel silly for allowing it now then!

ithinkimightbegoingmad · 09/10/2012 23:25

could it be somehow recycled to raise money for..rape crisis for example?

jeez...i wonder how much that gold coffin is worth?!

OP posts:
BustersOfDoom · 09/10/2012 23:30

Bet they do! Scarborough Council have been pretty quick to take down the plaque outside his house and the street name sign near where he lived. Leeds City Council have also removed his plaque in the Town Hall. And as much as the Royal Armouries here in Leeds have said they have no plan to rename Savile Hall no doubt they will do when nobody wants to book it for their corporate events! What company in their right mind after the Met statement today would book anything there?

Tryingtothinkofnewsnazzyname · 10/10/2012 10:33

BustersOfDoom Oh yes, I had totally forgotten how narky cemeteries can be about using the 'right' kind of language on headstones. Except when you're a high profile child abuser TV star. One law for the rich, eh?

saulaboutme · 11/10/2012 10:31

because it's elaborate and and stands out. + it looks like it's looking down over all the other graves I think. + don't think they would have ever taken it away if there was no truth in the accusations. + vandelism!

minibmw2010 · 11/10/2012 10:52

I has to admit my thoughts were a bit more basic ... I figured it probably cost shed loads of money and the family didn't want it damaged and then have to pay to replace it as he left all his money to charity and not them (but then I'm a cynic Smile)

TalesFromTheCryptoFascist · 11/10/2012 11:21

I was told the family were having it destroyed, must check my facts...

TalesFromTheCryptoFascist · 11/10/2012 11:22

it's true!

That to me says that the family believe the allegations are true.

DappyHays · 11/10/2012 11:29

The family have had it removed out of respect for the families who have loved ones buried at the same cemetary and also for JS's victims.

They may also elect to have him moved.

I find the concrete thing hard to believe and don't think the coffin is gold, just spray painted gold.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 11/10/2012 11:41

Why is the concrete thing significant? Does it destroy DNA?

seeker · 11/10/2012 11:44

It's not real gold! It would be too heavy to lift if it was.

alienreflux · 11/10/2012 11:46

just keeps getting worse though doesn't it?this morning some nurse who was laid up in bed, said she saw him molesting a brain injured child???!!
she couldn't do anything at the time, but why not do something afterwards???
Really don't want to think the hospitals knew what was happening, but wanted the charity money, so let it go.
