AIBU?

to ask who has had botox or fillers or plastic surgery of some kind?

(namechanged for this).

I can honestly say that having any of the above has never entered my mind. I'll be 40 next year. I have some wrinkles on my forehead, a neck that seems to be looking increasingly wobbly and wrinkly, and crinkles all round my eyes. But I just thought that was what happened as you got older. No-one I knew until very recently has ever had any 'work done'. Botox was something you read about in Grazia magazine.

But we've moved recently to a new area and (public) school and it seems that with the people where we live it is the norm to go for regular botox and/or fillers and/or other surgery from boob jobs to liposuction. This is discussed the same way buying a new dress would be chatted about over coffee. For the first time in my life I feel as though I am the odd woman out for just going au natural. I am starting to be swayed by their way of thinking, whereas previously I never could have imagined me having any of this stuff done.

So I'm just curious to know how many mumsnetters have either had any of these things done (if so what) and if not, would you consider it?

I sort of feel as though having stuff done is cheating, but if you're the only sucker not cheating, you end up as the loser.

I'm 28 and I wouldn't because, well, I just cannot give enough of a shit about it to part with that money and willingly have that pain.

I don't wear make-up and I've never dyed my hair but I do care about my appearance. I wear nice clothes, get my hair cut but I just haven't ever got the make-up and cosmetic surgery bug.

No judgement from me if you wanna do any of this stuff, just answering the OPs Q from the non-treatment side

I think everyone has their own lines, and that the important thing is to really think about your motivation. I think my 20 year old cousin is nuts for having had at least three major procedures, and she's slim and beautiful to start, but yet I have wanted breast surgery since I was younger than her, so maybe I'm also just nuts but conflicted.

roastednut Try Good Skin Days, Guiseley. Top notch. Fully trained nurses. Very professional.

I have my bunny lines 'toxed every 4 months. Love it. Reduces my headaches & stops my sinuses blocking. And of course makes me look younger Smile

Personally although I would consider surgery / other procedures for cosmetic reasons (I have a couple of nasty scars I wouldn't mind getting sorted), I wouldn't for wrinkles etc. I don't think wrinkles are ugly in the slightest, they are just a sign of not being young and there's nothing wrong with not being young.

I am only 25 so no wrinkles yet but I'm fairly confident I will never have cosmetic surgery mainly because I'm terrified of having surgery full stop and would never have anything unnecessary done. I won't have botox or fillers or whatever either because I don't like the idea of putting stuff in my face that's not meant to be there just to get rid of lines.
I also don't think that looking younger makes you look better. There's nothing wrong with looking your age. I know people in their 60s, 70s and older that I consider to be good looking. They have wrinkles, grey hair and middle age spread but still look good. Aging is natural and normal and nothing to be ashamed of or try and cover up.

I love threads like this with "I'm only 25 and I'm sure I'll never want this". Grin
Yeah yeah yeah! Wait 20 years and it's heading south and taking east and west with it, you might feel differently!

OldB, are you having both ops done together?
I'm considering a face lift in the next 5 years or so, I'd like an improved nose but I'm a bit put off by the possibility of not getting a good result.

And 'lol' at 25 year olds who think there's nothing wrong with looking your age :o

I wouldn't have considered it at 25 or 30 or even 35 either. Time marches on and my attitude has changed somewhat now.

Oldbag - good for you. Hope it goes well and gives you the results you want.

I'm 31 and have had botox for the last 2 years. I was getting heavy frown and forehead lines so I have botox injected every 4 months in these areas along with my crows feet. I love the result, and will continue for as long as I get desirable results. I would not rule out cosmetic surgery on my face in the future as and when I feel I need it to 'keep' the face I have now.

I wouldn't say I'm hugely vain, but I'm certainly confident about my looks, I wear makeup everyday and keep my size 8 figure in check. I breasted both children for a total of 5 years, and my breast certainly show this, but I am not concerned by this fact, and would never change what had fed and nourished my babies.
Haven't had fillers, but would consider their use if I felt I needed them in the future.

thanks for the advice Oldb, I have done some reading online, forums and surgeons websites, etc.

When I feel the time is right to move forwards I'll book some consultations, then again I may wait 5 years and decide I dont care about my face!

Hope you have successfull surgery and a peaceful post operative period:o

Botox is a time bomb.

The lymph glands filter it out of the body, so they are being over loaded with toxins.

I know a woman who has had a face lift and she looks wierd - no wrinkles but very over stretched skin. I prefer my wrinkles.

Fillers and botox result in pillowcase cat woman or duck beak look - not good. Think Lesley Ash - how wrong did that go.

It's sad that women buy into this cosmetic surgery must-have attitude.

I was at a party last night, a woman of 36 started talking about how she has had Botox. And it turned out that most of the over 35 year old women had done it! I was amazed. They did t actually look younger than their age though. Just...flatter and smoother. The best way to not look old is to be happy. And get lots of sleep. And sex. When i am happy, i still get carded buying wine! ( and i have plenty of laugh lines round my eyes) i dont know that i did look better at 25. I didn't know who I was, I had no real confidence. Now, I look ay my face and see a story on it of how i got here, good and bad. I may get Botox at 45, who knows, but i hope not.

I've had Botox and cosmetic surgery. I can assure you I don't look like a duck or a cat. Hmm
I look younger and happier. If people don't like it that's their look out. I can afford it, and its not harming anyone. Plenty worse things I could be doing.

I have never been "trashy" looking ,as was always flat chestedSad and had narrow hips. In my day, it was called "the little boy look"Confused. When the hour glass figure was the symbol of a sex bomb. and highly desired.

The only curves I had was a rounded pert bum. But women thought I looked elegant and graceful - that was my ballet trainingSmile

I'm perplexed at the moral opprobrium aimed at those who choose to have cosmetic procedures, if you dont like it dont have it, why the need to deride those who do want to have cosmetic surgery/botox etc.

Do you think that any kind of vanity is shameful?

Angelina Jolie is only 37/38! Why would she have a facelift???

Mental.

Her arch nemesis Jennifer Aniston is an example of good 'work'.

Mercury - you're being disengenuous if you think women (because let's face, it is women) increasingly having work done doesn't create an overall environment that puts pressure on everyone else to do the same - or look old, tired, wrinkled, etc, just by being normal.

Should people stop doing it for that reason? Of course not. But likewise, don't expect people not to have an opinion on it.

I'm one of the lucky ones since I genuinely don't think I need anything and am happy with myself as I am. But I am in a teeny, tiny minority.

And no, it's not just people from the 80s who've had bad - or too much - surgery, and who consequently have The Look.

Nicole Kidman? Kylie Minogue? Among many others...

God, Kylie needs to delete her botox doctor's number from her phone immediately.
