AIBU?

to ask who has had botox or fillers or plastic surgery of some kind?

(namechanged for this).

I can honestly say that having any of the above has never entered my mind. I'll be 40 next year. I have some wrinkles on my forehead, a neck that seems to be looking increasingly wobbly and wrinkly, and crinkles all round my eyes. But I just thought that was what happened as you got older. No-one I knew until very recently has ever had any 'work done'. Botox was something you read about in Grazia magazine.

But we've moved recently to a new area and (public) school and it seems that with the people where we live it is the norm to go for regular botox and/or fillers and/or other surgery from boob jobs to liposuction. This is discussed the same way buying a new dress would be chatted about over coffee. For the first time in my life I feel as though I am the odd woman out for just going au natural. I am starting to be swayed by their way of thinking, whereas previously I never could have imagined me having any of this stuff done.

So I'm just curious to know how many mumsnetters have either had any of these things done (if so what) and if not, would you consider it?

I sort of feel as though having stuff done is cheating, but if you're the only sucker not cheating, you end up as the loser.

Yes, I don't think I could bring myself to part with cash to have toxins put in my face.

I definitely plan to. Am going to wait til stop ttcing/bfing etc though just in case there are any negative effects no one knows about in that kind of area

Well, I don't do that stuff either. Hair colouring and what-not. I have it cut a couple of time a year, otherwise I might piss my employers off.

Waerlego why so defensive? Each to their own. Having hair cut is vanity also.

Report
waterlego6064 · 09/10/2012 22:19

Is that defensive?

Thing is, if I didn't have my hair cut at all, it would look very wild and that genuinely would make me look less professional, I think.

I think there's probably a fine line somewhere, between keeping oneself clean and tidy and being vain. I think Botox et al definitely inhabit the latter category, personally. I just don't see what's so wrong with accepting and embracing the effects of age.

I would NEVER issue put downs to othets for tbeor petsonal choices about tbeir apoearence. Maybe new advances in beauty treatments are just too scary and you do not like change, scared of what others feel.

I'm not sure what you mean. Sorry if you feel I have put people down though, not my intention.

I meant, I don't know what you mean by 'scared of what others feel'.

I am in the beauty industry so have some v high tech skincare. I have had Botox twice before & restyllane in my lips once but not for a long time. I loved the look first time & got a few pressure headaches the second time.
If it is done well it can make you look well, refreshed. Done badly,frozen/unnatural. Do your research & do it if it makes you happy :)

I dont think I am remotely vain sometimes I go out looking like a bag lady sometimes I really enjoy fashion and beauty-it can be fun to experiment! Certainly I would consider a few fillers. I have had botox- like going for a dental check (in fact a dentist did it) but money is a bit tight at mo...

I have botox on my forehead every 4 months or so, have done since I was 26 (I'm 29 now) I don't have any wrinkles yet but have very deep forehead lines when I raise my eyebrows. They have always bothered me so pretty glad there is a solution for them, when I start to get crows feet I'm not going to think twice about getting a second area done!

Yes, that may well be the case, op! But dont you worry about "getting left behind". If you are happy with you, that's all the matters Smile If you think you would like to erase some of the lines, that's fine ,too. No one has to know.
Yes, do research.
And yes, I found that it did hurt...ok,I passed out Blush ...then vomited

Usually people who are against this stuff, who are 'happy with their natural look', look better than average anyway. Often high cheekbones etc.

But am surprised at 30 somethings having stuff done, I'd presumed it was the over 40s and 50s!

I have Botox and have had a breast lift and reduction. I don't get why it's cheating, I just think in 30 years or so it will be decomposing under the ground anyway, why not enjoy life and feel good while it lasts? I didn't really enjoy having a size 10 top half but size 16 boobs that touched my belly. Now I just feel normal. Never had pain with Botox, takes about 10 seconds.

I'm 42, and will admit to being a bit vain. I have a 'front of house' type job which I love and am planning to use my Xmas bonus to 'rejuvenate' myself ;-)
Would love my lips to look like they did when I was 25, and want to lose the 11 between the eyebrows. The rest I will live with.

Everybody is vain. To label othets as vain is hypocrisy. Laughable.

Interesting thread. I have a question though- when you say do your research, where do you look? Any recommendations of sites? Where do you start? It all seems a bit daunting...please help! (Is there an emoticon for clueless?)

Google the clinics/pkaces closest to you or ask on an internet forum for recommendations. Go and see them.

I have been having Botox for about 8 years. It works, so I will continue to have it.

I'm also thinking about getting my eyes done.

I haven't, mainly because I'm a complete baby when it comes to anything painful and I can't afford it.

I'm 42 and look relatively ok for my age (I think!). I'm not going to win any beauty contests, but I'm fairly content. The way I see it is there's always someone younger than you and someone older than you. I've lived my teens, twenties and thirties looking pretty good and now it's someone else's turn. I'll look as good as my age allows and that's pretty much it really.

I don't begrudge other people the chance to have anything done though. Whatever makes you happy I say!

If a hugely overweight petson had fillers then lost all excess weight would the fillets be eliminated from tbe body via the same process as fat or would it stay?

Report
SoleSource · 10/10/2012 09:23

I do not see why peopke need to justify it either way.
