You got my attention and reminded me I need to do this again. Have just booked my appointment for 26th October. Good post!

Scheherezade · 01/10/2012 19:53

monkey why wouldn't you be able to give blood if breastfeeding?! Last I checked, babies drank milk, not blood...!

oopslateagain · 01/10/2012 19:54

Thanks for the reminder. I had asked to come off their reminder list as I was waiting for a hospital referral, now I need to ring to make sure they are willing to let me donate now I have a diagnosis. Apparently with what I've got it's hit-or-miss; some centres will accept me, some won't (due to bruising/bleeding issues).

Fingers crossed they'll still want me.

I used to give blood years ago but stopped doing it after my ex and I split up as I had no one to look after the dc so got out of the habit. I registered online a few months ago and gave blood in August and will do so again in November, I think it is (date is on my google calendar) thanks to a thread by MrsDeVere. I hope to continue to donate on a regular basis :)

nicobean · 01/10/2012 19:54

Good one OP, you've made me get signed up for an appointment!

DS needed blood after a major op at 11 months.

It's one of those things you never imagine you or your family will need, but when they do, you're so grateful. It really is such a gift.

Thanks to everyone who donates!!

Floggingmolly · 01/10/2012 19:56

Yes, another one who's had post partum transfusions Sad
I've given gallons in the past, though, and dh continues the good work!

complexnumber · 01/10/2012 20:00

I gave blood when working in a school in Botswana (southern Africa). Loads of kids came swarming up to my 'station' to see what colour a white person's blood was.

I think I disappointed them.

wishingonadream · 01/10/2012 20:03

I wish I could, but because I had a blood transfusion after birth of dd they will not let me

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 01/10/2012 20:05

Got me too!

Unfortunately I can't. I'm due very soon Smile

SchrodingersMew · 01/10/2012 20:07

^"

You should never give blood if:

You have ever had syphilis, HTLV (Human T - lymphotropic virus), HIV or hepatitis C.

You've ever worked as a prostitute.

You've ever injected yourself with drugs - even once.

You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with:

A man (if you?re a male). Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man (with or without a condom) are deferred from blood donation for 12 months. For more information click here.

A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female).

A prostitute.

Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs.

Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates."^

Why is it if someone has ever worked as a prostitute they can't donate? Yet a man who has sex with one only has to wait 12 months? Confused

And at what point does being paid for sex alter your blood? Surely that should say anyone who has regular unprotected sex with randoms.

I'm not sure if I can donate, I'm on some medication but would love to. :(

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 01/10/2012 20:08

And have been breastfeeding for a million trillion years (by Daily Mail standards) and have never had the old haemo turned down.

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 01/10/2012 20:10

Complex, that's so cute. Smile

Rain1975 · 01/10/2012 20:11

Sheela half an hours peace and a cup of tea is a rare treat. Am sold :-)

ORANGEgiraffesCantWearGOLD · 01/10/2012 20:11

They can't get it out of me - I have tried twice. They have told me to come back when I am 30....I will be there on my 30th birthday!

I am on the bone marrow register and the organ donation register though

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 01/10/2012 20:11

Aaaah what the hell, I'll keep chuntering and keep this thread in Active Grin

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 01/10/2012 20:12

And all the Orange Squash you can drink Rain

Softlysoftly · 01/10/2012 20:13

I've registered with the Welsh blood service twice and they have never ever got back in contact Angry.

I have DD2 now so off for another few months, they can't have my stinky English blood even if they want it

DilysPrice · 01/10/2012 20:14

Gay men campaigned to have their bar lowered from life to 12 months, and the stats bore out their assertion that it should be reasonably safe to do so, so the timebar was lowered. Prostitutes have not campaigned in this way, so the lifetime bar remains.

SchrodingersMew · 01/10/2012 20:16

But it's only 12 months if you have sex with one! That's what doesn't make sense.

I don't even understand why it's on there, there is no difference (body wise) to someone who is just promiscuous for the sake of it.

OtterLovesTheRumba · 01/10/2012 20:17

I went a fortnight ago.

I love the chance to lounge around while busy people are nice to me, it's makes me happy.

And we had Orange Club biscuits this time.

DilysPrice · 01/10/2012 20:25

Prostitutes sleep with more punters than punters sleep with prostitutes (in general) - simply more opportunities to contract HIV, so they're more at risk. Also male-female transmission easier than vice versa if we're talking about female prostitutes.

In theory you could add an "are you very promiscuous?" question but it would be tough to word, and the numbers of people who contract HIV outside of the main risk groups are very small indeed at the moment in the UK.

SchrodingersMew · 01/10/2012 20:30

I suppose. Still think there should be a question about promiscuity like you have said.

I certainly know at least a few people who regularly sleep around and don't use anything and know 2 people who worked as escorts who swear they were protected every time...
