you know how to get attention on here lol.

i have made all sorts of excusses over the years, and as i am O+ i should be donating < shit scared emotion>

helenthemadex · 01/10/2012 19:05

made me look Wink

I'm in France and not allowed to donate here because of CJD, it applies to all the English even my friend who has been a Veggie for 25 years!

vodkaanddietirnbru · 01/10/2012 19:05

I gave blood 2 weeks ago as I hadnt given blood for about 17 years!! Am going to get back in the habit of donating again as I have a fairly rare blood group (B-) and want some available for me if I ever need it!

Tiredmumno1 · 01/10/2012 19:06

Love the title Wink

I can't at the moment, medical reasons, as soon as I can, I will.

Keep up the good work OP and everyone else Smile

QuintessentialShadows · 01/10/2012 19:07

Isnt that what most dog owners think anyway?

DrSeuss · 01/10/2012 19:12

I had to give up when they brought in the one needle stick rule. No one has ever got blood out of me in one go as I have a tendon over the vein in the crook of my arm. I offered them other veins or multiple goes but no.

HecateHarshPants · 01/10/2012 19:13

damn it. I had my rant all planned out.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 01/10/2012 19:13

blood transfusion website says: You should not give blood if you are pregnant or you are a woman who has had a baby in the last 6 months.

also says this about blood transfusions: You should not give blood if: You have received blood or think you may have received blood during the course of any medical treatment or procedure anywhere in the world since 1st January 1980. (risk of CJD)

McHappyPants2012 · 01/10/2012 19:16

Are you waiting to see a doctor, dentist, complimentary therapist or any type of health care person? Does that include routine dentist appoinment or Smear test.

Have you taken ANY medicine in the last 7 days? even parecetomol

As far as you know, have you been in contact with anyone with an infectious disease in the last 4 weeks? well i work in a hospital there is alway infectious diseases

In the last 12 months have you had oral or anal sex with another man with or without a condom or other form of protection? Why does that matter

DilysPrice · 01/10/2012 19:16

Grin I'm trying to shake off a tiny but persistent medical problem but the instant the docs have signed me off I'll be bashing down their door - IMO 1 pint of blood donated = 1 effectively calorie neutral chocolate cake and GBK burger

imperialstateknickers · 01/10/2012 19:20

I gave blood for 25 years and it was the blood test thingy that alerted them to my anaemia - letter to GP, now being treated. Will probably never be well enough to give again but will wave flags for everyone else.

DilysPrice · 01/10/2012 19:23

Most of those questions are for follow up by the nurse. AFAIK paracetomol bars you for about 48 hours whilst aspirin and antibiotics they do want you to wait a week. Ditto you could say, I'm waiting for a routine smear, and they'd say yes that's fine and wave you through.

The gay sex thing is unfortunately based on the huge difference in infection rates between gay and straight men - their infection rate is about 5% in the UK, that's about fifty times higher than people who are not in a risk group.

DilysPrice · 01/10/2012 19:24

(HIV infection rates of course - I forgot to specify)

RightBuggerforGOLD · 01/10/2012 19:30

Hahaha, fab! I can't because I have had a transfusion. But I would like to say thank you so much to everyone who gives blood because it saved my life when I suffered pph after having dd. I am so so grateful. Xx

Rain1975 · 01/10/2012 19:35

Have just registered now I'm getting nervous as very squeamish

ouryve · 01/10/2012 19:36

I can't.

DH does when they have a session he can get to, though.

SheelaNeGig · 01/10/2012 19:37

They are always ok with me taking a daily antihistamine and also working in a hospital (infectious diseases).

Rain. I am also hopelessly squeemish. I do a YEOUCH when they stick in the needle then its fine..

And you get to lie down in peace for half an hour.

And get tea and a packet of crisps and a mint club afterwards Grin

Can't give blood as had a blood and plasma transfusion in 2007. My GP, the other GP's in my surgery and a few in my dad's surgery have all told me that the blood is fully renewed every 6 months and they don't see why I can't give.

I've also wondered about donating organs and marrow if I can't give blood. I mean, if I can't donate blood because I may be contaminated with CJD, then should people like myself, who've had transfusions after 1980, be able to join the organs or marrow donation register? After all, if there's no way of telling if a person has CJD until they die, then surely the rest of the body is at risk of also being contaminated by the blood from a transfusion Confused.

Just something I've wondered and hopefully someone can put me right on this.

Can't give blood, plasma, donate bone marrow or organs as I get regular transfusions of a blood product (IVIg) for my neurological disability.

But yabu because touching dogshit could give me a rare infection that could mean I couldn't walk for months! Cos I've got a buggered immune system through no fault of my own.

It's not funny, really.
