And very rude!

Dsil came round last night and put her bare feet up on my sofa! I cringed....

I have a bit of a thing about feet, can't stand them. Except perfect ones, and preferably baby feet. But hers were disgusting and had loads of dead skin.

Dh thinks I'm nuts, but apart from anything else, when on earth did it become acceptable to do this?

OP posts:
shrinkingnora · 27/09/2012 13:58

My friend was round here once and was sitting with her bare feet on the sofa and DS1 who was then about 3, came and gently laid his penis on her foot.

NellyJob · 27/09/2012 13:58

YANBU it's not the sort of thing you do in other people's houses, still it's better than shoes I suppose.

farewellfigure · 27/09/2012 13:59

Is it OK to put bare feet on a picnic rug? Especially after wearing flip flops so your cracked heels are all brown and grimy. Me and my friends did it all summer. Urgh...picky bits in the sarnies!

OwlLady · 27/09/2012 14:00

I don't think you are being unreasonable either if she had horrible feet

NoMoreMarbles · 27/09/2012 14:12

i would be inclined to say YABU...

i dislike other peoples feet but thats my thing not theirs...

if she had shoes on and put them on the furniture thats rude but not bare feet on a couch whilst getting comfortable...

Birdsgottafly · 27/09/2012 14:50

I wash my feet in my family's bathroom and then do this, tbh.

It is better than putting my shoes on the furniture.

We treat each other informally and make ourselves at home in each others houses, though,or in other words, treat each other as family, which not everyone seems to Hmm.

catgirl1976 · 27/09/2012 14:54

I think you need to chill out a bit. :)

It's not like she took a dump on your sofa - its only feet. Family feet at that :)

Floggingmolly · 27/09/2012 14:56

You are not BU. Revolting thing to do.

BonaDea · 27/09/2012 14:58

YABU.

I think this is more of a "you" thing than a "SIL" thing...

Dildobaggins · 27/09/2012 15:01

Sorry, but you are nuts.

Flimflammery · 27/09/2012 15:02

Ha ha, harassed, don't come and live in Asia then, where it's extremely rude to leave your sandals or shoes on when you enter someone's house, and most people wear sandals or flipflops because of the heat so don't have any socks on (shock horror).

JudithOfThePiece · 27/09/2012 15:02

I think 'disgusting' is a bit strong!! Unless they looked particularly manky, they're only feet and quite possibly cleaner than many people's hands.

I think you've overreacted, tbh OP.

fertilityFTW · 27/09/2012 15:03

Growing up, my mum always saw it as a source of great pride that folks felt comfortable enough to 'let their hair down and put their feet up' Grin.
But that said, to each his own and it's your home and you are entitled to be as particular or as eccentric as you like, no?

JudithOfThePiece · 27/09/2012 15:05

BTW, if it's a cleanliness issue for you, why is it ok at your parents'? That suggests to me it's actually more of a rudeness thing for you and that is, IMVHO, unreasonable.

CouthyMowWearingOrange · 27/09/2012 15:22

I can't sit comfortably unless I have my feet on the chair due to my muscle issues. So YABU.

Paiviaso · 27/09/2012 16:05

OP, I'm imaging everyone at your house sitting very upright on the sofas at all times Grin

YABU, the nice thing about sofas is curling up on them. When I'm on a sofa my legs are always up under me!

Floggingmolly · 27/09/2012 16:32

My feet (or the family's of course) can go on our chairs; but just as I wouldn't do it in someone else's house, I'd be pissed at them doing it in mine.

gotthemoononastick · 27/09/2012 17:03

Thank goodness this has never happened to me ....wouldn't be able to keep the conversation going, as I wouldn't know where to look! y.a.n.b.u.!!DH would freak in disbelief! Toddlers sit nicely here, never mind grown ladies.Ugh,and think of the upholstery!

pongysticks · 27/09/2012 17:05

YABU and then I had to think, only this weekend I visited friends and in the evening I had my feet on the sofa!! Yikes -I really don;t see the harm.

SrirachaGirl · 27/09/2012 17:06

EW! I don't even like other people's bare feet on my floors, let alone the furniture Shock. I would have nightmares. YANBU.

Littleprincessrocks · 27/09/2012 17:35

YABU. Unless they were covered in something disgusting that is.
Or if you eat your dinner off of it, then YANBU... lol.

I find feet on the table worse, as my kids do sometimes eat from the coffee table. In which case I would politely request they put their feet elsewhere, or get out the dettoll.
But on the settee? No issue at all.

stealthsquiggle · 27/09/2012 17:36

Sofas are for curling up on, surely Confused?

SriRachaGirl - so what is acceptable if you don't like bare feet on your floors? Shoes? Socks? Tights? Or do you issue slippers at the door?

(not having a go at anyone - just genuinely Confused)

ilovetermtime · 27/09/2012 17:37

I have problems with feet (there's no such thing as nice feet in my book), but I would not have a problem with friends/family doing this in my house, in fact I would take it as a compliment that they felt comfortable enough to do it. So, YABU.

HecateHarshPants · 27/09/2012 17:41

I love it when people feel so relaxed in my home that they can kick off their shoes and curl up on the sofa/chair.

It's a massive compliment.

Maybe if you could see it like that, you might be able to cope with seeing the feet? Grin

WilfSell · 27/09/2012 17:47

OMFG. I am OUTRAGED. HORRIFIED. DISGUSTED.

..that no fucker noticed ROFLd at shrinkingnora's post.

Really nora? Grin. Kudos to him.
