stupid bloody party bags!

Justhadenough · 26/09/2012 21:59

DS is having his first big party for his 7th birthday. It is in the half term It's a football party and the whole class plus cousins have been invited so it's for about 40 children and I was just going to fill my party bags with cheap football themed tat and birthday cake.
DH thought this was fine until today. He has been talking about it at work and thinks we should get them all better presents. He wants to but in

  • A book
  • a football
  • football card
  • a carrot sticks. A nice idea in theory but expensive and I think it's not really needed. I also think that carrot sticks are shit not going to be eaten where as the cake will be enjoyed, plus they will have enough party food so they won't need to eat the cake straight away and could take it home.

Does anyone have any ideas, before I set fire to ALL party bags.
Thanks

The best party bag we ever got had a balloon and a piece of cake. The children weren't bothered and the mums were all gushingly grateful for the lack of plastic tat. I gave everyone a glow stick once - they loved that!

Pixieonthemoor · 27/09/2012 10:06

Wow zipzap is a party bag genius!

Just wanted to add, do you have a Primark near you? You can buy packs of football theme socks which went down well with mine last time. Also, army style caps, sunglasses in the summer and those funny little rubbery egg shaped watches for 50p.

bobblehat · 27/09/2012 10:10

DS2 age 7 had a sports party this year. We had bags with a piece of cake, a balloon and a moshi monster - which went down very well. Both of my ds's are real book worms but even they would not be impressed with a book. I thought party bags were supposed full of stuff that parents wouldn't normally buy, that's why they're a treat!

Nobody will forget the carrot sticks. You will never live it down.

Kids do NOT want healthy snacks at a party and why should they?

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 10:16

I'm sorry but SNORT at the carrot sticks. I'm pretty sure that would be classed as child cruelty, your DS would never live it down! Grin

I like some of the ideas on here of just one thing and a piece of cake 99p football, 50p watch, bubbles, balloon, tennis ball, etc). DS's party is approaching, I'm planning on a multipack of haribo, multipack of plastic tat, and cake. [lazy]

boredandrestless · 27/09/2012 10:27

Having had a nosey there is some good boys tat on the sports direct site.

England window stickers - 29p
England temporary tattoos - 29p
Wrist sweatbands - 29p
and the watches linked to above - 50p

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 27/09/2012 10:28

Just give each of then a bag of Haribo as they walk out the door?

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 10:32

I like the sports shop tat idea OP if you were feeling really adventurous you could wrap up the Tatt and have a lucky dip so each guest gets 'something' and its wrapped .

Pandemoniaa · 27/09/2012 10:37

Still sniggering at the idea of carrot sticks. When my dcs were small, this would have been one step beyond for even the mother who served up the bizarre "special treat" of a plate of lightly stir-fried brussel tops at her dd's party.

There's lots of good suggestions, upthread, OP. But please, please, dissuade your DH from the carrot sticks. Or indeed any other sort of unexpected vegetation in the party bags.

stealthsquiggle · 27/09/2012 10:41

Pound shop (or Asda, or wherever) footballs is the best idea. DS went to a 7th birthday football themed party - they played with the footballs all party and then took one each home with them - they were all thrilled.

choccyp1g · 27/09/2012 10:42

Hasn't anyone said it yet? Leave the B*stard Grin

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 27/09/2012 10:42

How big a the party bags, that a football would fit in them?!

For gods sake, shove in haribos and tat!

The new foodball cards came out today. Shove a pack of them in, some sweets and a piece of cake and job done.

Carot sticks! Ha ha haaa!

Hotcoffeeisamemory · 27/09/2012 10:42

Carrot.
I'd love a carot in mine though.

luckylavender · 27/09/2012 10:43

For DS's 7th football party we gave them each a football - around £1.50 at Sports Direct. No party bags, kids loved them. Simples.

stealthsquiggle · 27/09/2012 10:44

Added advantage of footballs is that you don't need a bag at all - so no scope for horrible brats little darlings inspecting it and going "is that all?".

Feed them the cake. Give them a football. Make your DH eat his 40 bags of carrot sticks himself.

Jins · 27/09/2012 10:48

DS1's 7th birthday party was timed badly as it coincided with his weird teacher's 'healthy eating' lessons. The whole class became terrified of fat, calories, white bread and any drink except water. It was all we heard for days on end. We got through the sandwiches etc without too much fuss and then I told them that I'd heard that they were all worried about what they ate so they had a choice of a banana or an apple. Then I showed them the penguins. I went home with a lot of fruit Grin

Noqontrol · 27/09/2012 10:53

I'd fill up a football party cup with sweets, wrap it with celophane and tie it with ribbons. Or look on the book people website for cheap packs of books to split and wrap individually, along with a piece of cake. I love doing party bags, and carrot sticks are the naffest thing I've heard of yet. I really wouldn't waste your time, they will end up geting binned.

fortifiedwithtea · 27/09/2012 10:58

Carrot sticks Grin. Have you shown these responses to your DH? He should really get the message. Healthy snacks in party bags, wrong just very wrong.

Lots of good alternative suggestions up thread though. Enjoy the party Smile.

porcamiseria · 27/09/2012 11:09

screw dat!

every month I throw away cack from party bags

waste of money, and envorinmentally shite

DeWe · 27/09/2012 11:17

I Grin at carrot sticks. Sort of thing my dh says and I roll eyes (and ignore muttering "were you ever young?").

I think a book and a football is too much. Choose one to give.

I usually go for a book (pound shop is great!) something else cheap (like a novelty pen-at about 5 for £1 at the pound shop) a small pack of sweets and a piece of cake.

fuzzpig · 27/09/2012 11:34

carrot sticks??? its a fecking party bag not a nose bag for a donkey

Can I nominate this for post of the week? :o

mrsscoob · 27/09/2012 11:52

OMG carrot sticks, I can just imagine my child's reaction. Oh I am Blush for you just thinking about it. PLEASE DON'T

Will you show your DH this thread?

mrsscoob · 27/09/2012 11:55

Oh and I know us parents hate party bags but kids do love them. Slice of cake, bag of haribo, mini fun size choc bar, party blower thing and 2 pieces of some kind of plastic shite should go down a treat.
