stupid bloody party bags!

DS is having his first big party for his 7th birthday. It is in the half term It's a football party and the whole class plus cousins have been invited so it's for about 40 children and I was just going to fill my party bags with cheap football themed tat and birthday cake.
DH thought this was fine until today. He has been talking about it at work and thinks we should get them all better presents. He wants to but in

  • A book
  • a football
  • football card
  • a carrot sticks. A nice idea in theory but expensive and I think it's not really needed. I also think that carrot sticks are shit not going to be eaten where as the cake will be enjoyed, plus they will have enough party food so they won't need to eat the cake straight away and could take it home.

Does anyone have any ideas, before I set fire to ALL party bags.
Thanks

TunaPastaBake · 26/09/2012 22:18

You know if you put carrot sticks in your party bag the other Mums will snigger at you Wink

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 26/09/2012 22:25

Party bags give me The Rage. If you must do them let Wilcos be your friend.

DH is being an utter nobber with the carrots. Surely if its football it should be quarter of an orange.

YANBU.

gordyslovesheep · 26/09/2012 22:28

not just that tuna the KIDS will be utterly horrified ! I remember the party where DD1 didn't get CAKE in her party bag - my goodness the ungrateful little darling - she acted like she had been given a bag of dog poo!

notso · 26/09/2012 22:42

Nevermind the peeling and chopping just put the whole carrot in, at least then the parents can use it for dinner.

zipzap · 26/09/2012 22:43

I've given footballs as boy's party bag presents - I got the 99p ones from Asda. I had one giant party bin bag that held all the footballs, made the kids do lucky dip to pick one each. The party bag (provided by the venue) just had a slice of cake in it.

Worked out really easily - I knew exactly how much I was spending on party bag filling (although I had about 20 rather than 40!), shoved them all in a big bag and that was it, no hassle doing fiddly filling with lots of bits and bobs. then just did the cake at the party after they had done blowing out candles and singing happy birthday.

If you do go down that route, it's worth ringing up asda and seeing if they will put the number of balls you want by for you - they don't always have 40 in stock, plus if they know you want a lot like that they will be able to put by a single box which will make it even easier rather than having to have them all loose in your trolley! I looked in lots of places and they were the cheapest place to buy the balls (albeit only a penny cheaper than the pound shop, where they also had silly face balls, not just footie ones if you want to have some that are less overtly boy-ish if you will have lots of girls).

The next year we put in watches from sports direct - which were 50p each
www.sportsdirect.com/multi-watches-899023
and a 35p tennis ball from there too, and a small bag of haribo. plus a slice of cake. All came to less than a pound each and went down well with the boys (it was for a 7th birthday) who were much more impressed with the watches as it was something different and they looked like they were much more expensive than they were Grin. Advantage was they were small and easy to carry - especially when compared with the footballs of the previous year!

It's worth browsing through the sports direct sale section and accessories sections as they have some stuff that is really cheap if you want other party bag filler stuff. Other friends have bought good stuff from ebay, including sets of spy pens (one of invisible ink, one that shows it up) that I remember from my childhood, wash on/wash off tattoos and colouring sets, all for less than a pound each.

And if you are looking for books - look at thebookpeople.co.uk as mentioned, but also look at bananas.co.uk - they are the clearance site for bookpeople, so have stuff that has been marked down even further. But they don't have loads of stock for each thing as they do on the main site (obviously!) so if you see a set of books that is right then it is worth getting them there and then. Stock seems to come and go in waves - sometimes you look on the site and realise that there is lots of stuff that is out of stock, other times they still have all the stuff listed on it. I haven't stalked it for long enough to figure out if they have a pattern and say put a fresh load of books on there every friday or the third tuesday of the month or whatever, so that if you look at it just before they put more stock on then it doesn't have much stuff or if it really is just luck of the draw!

Whatever you end up doing - hope your ds has a lovely party and I'm sure the kids will all love their party bags, whatever you put in them (well, give or take a few carrot sticks Wink)

Hassled · 26/09/2012 22:46

:o at the carrot sticks. The kids will hate you, the parents will judge you. Don't even begin to think about it.

My advice - add up the money you'd spend on tat and use it to just buy one semi decent thing per child. That's worked well for me - once I got everyone a poster, and they at least acted delighted.

RosieMBanks · 26/09/2012 22:50

Carrot sticks...Grin Baker Ross might be worth a look...they have lots of football stuff including tattoos, and the Book People have Beast Quest and Jack Stalwart at the moment!

Gentleness · 26/09/2012 22:52

This is part of the future I am dreading. My eldest is 3 tomorrow and I'm already telling all my friends with kids his age that I don't understand the waste of money that is party bags. Looks like for 40 kids you'll be spending £80 to £120. That is just ridiculous! Why do they need them? Cake in a napkin in a cheapy sandwich bag. That's all I'm planning to do!

Floggingmolly · 26/09/2012 22:54

Do not put carrot sticks in a party bag! Your poor DS will be infamous for the rest of his schooldays. Seriously.

SomeoneThatYouUsedToKnow · 26/09/2012 23:10

Carrot sticks Grin. You're havin' a laff!

Just give each DC a chocolate bar with a funny printed sticker designed by your DC saying
thankyou for coming to DC's party, DC hopes you had a great time

You do not need to give anything else at all. No one expects it.

exoticfruits · 26/09/2012 23:10

I agree - carrot sticks are an absolute 'no,no!'.
I just put a piece of the birthday cake.

Leena49 · 27/09/2012 02:07

He he to the carrot sticks. That's funny. You were joking right?

ripsishere · 27/09/2012 02:12

I am smiling at carrot sticks. Your DH is bonkers conkers.
I don't do party bags. DD was distraught about it, but, she's learned to live with it.

My son went to a football party about this age and the host gave out the cheap footballs to each kid instead of a party bag, the footballs cost about a quid each and the kids loved them
Along with a bit of prewrapped cake in a football napkin

shemademedoit · 27/09/2012 07:13

Give them all kinder eggs.

olibeansmummy · 27/09/2012 07:39

If you put carrot sticks in your ds will always be the boy who had carrots sticks in his party bags :(

purplehouse · 27/09/2012 09:49

Kinder eggs brilliant idea - toy and choc in one.

Agree with olibeansmummy - your DS may be in for some stick over the carrot sticks.

YvonneMcGruder · 27/09/2012 09:56

carrot sticks??? its a fecking party bag not a nose bag for a donkey seriously Grin at that, really did LOL then!
Mine both love carrot sticks. Really they don't go in party bags though, as that'd be a complete and total faff to peel and chop carrots for 40 people, talk about giving yourself extra work!
Plus, after all that work, half the ungrateful little feckers would just chuck them in the bin anyway! Grin
Party bag stuff, and totally cheap are :

  • Pack of balloons, one balloon per bag
  • mulitpack of pencils from somewhere like Wilkinsons or Tescos - one in each bag
  • a piece of cake

That's it. Any more and you run the risk of spending loads, or people just losing all the plastic tat once they get home.
Cake, balloon, a pencil. Maybe a little bag of Haribos which also come in multipacks for easy dishing out.
That's all you need!

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 09:59

Carrot sticks !! yes they are going to love those , get a big plastic tub fill it with some sweets and let them pick something as they go home , get those football chocolate sweets and a bit of cake,

TeeBee · 27/09/2012 09:59

When my ds had a football party I bought cheap footballs and cello taped a small pack of haribo to it with a thank you note for each child. You can buy uninflected footballs from amazon for less than a pound. Carrot sticks????? Bless him!

celebmum · 27/09/2012 10:00

Get thee to £shop and buy 40plastic footballs! 1each and a piece of cake.. Sorted. Grin

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 10:01

He said he would 'help out' with the peeling, but he isn't great at peeling veg anyway never mind enough for 40 kids.

sorry that is really funny

thebeesnees79 · 27/09/2012 10:02

I bloody hate party bags! It cost me around £40 for party bags alone at my sons party so for my daughters I had two big bowls one filled with mini bags of haribo & the other with treat size cadbury chocs.
Each kid picked one of each & were more than happy.
Party bag stuff tends to go in the bin in our house lol.
Another good idea is mini pots of bubbles with wands, about 30p each and kids love them. good luck, partys are stressful with tons of kids and I am glad my two are out the way till next year hehe
