To expect DD to wear her tracksuit for hockey?

Am seriously not happy at DD being told she couldn't wear her school tracksuit for hockey yesterday. Rain was forecast for goodness sake! She came home drenched to the skin, soaking wet hair & this was 2 hours later. Woken up with a seriously snotty nose this morning, which she will no doubt pass around the whole family. If I take time off either for her or me, I don't get paid.

Would you complain to the school? There were a couple of times last year when I thought it was unreasonable to do hockey without a tracksuit at minus something daytime temperatures, but I let it go. Is now the time to kick up a fuss or am I being a helicopter parent?

If the tracksuit is part of her school PE kit, I don't see why she couldn't wear it either. Do they wait for sub zero temperatures before it's introduced? DS had the same thing on Thursday, outside in shorts and t-shirt in the rain

When did you last play hockey? I used to finish a match drenched but not with rain. One becomes hot with the exertion and speed so would suffocate in a tracksuit.

But a wet tracksuit would have just held the wet to her. Shorts are much better unless it is really bitter cold as at least the wet isn't held against your body. also would have nothing for her hair!

Why didn't she change into the dry tracksuit after hockey or back into school uniform?

Yes tracksuit is waterproof & even has a hood. What's the point in paying for regulation kit if they're never allowed to wear it?

She needed to stay in her kit for after school sports club unfortunately!

We were never even allowed to wear jumpers - games skirt and aertex blouse and if you're too cold, run around more!

Think dds can usually wear their PE jumpers, but very rarely jogger bottoms. It is usual I think, on the basis that you'll get too hot in a tracksuit whilst playing. Second what the others have said!

I just scraped the car window on the way to drop DD to hockey and she was wearing a skort and an aertex (sp?) blouse and a hoodie. Her trackies were in her bag.

Getting wet in PE does not cause colds.

OK, you could say that feeling low can in turn lower your immune system thus giving an infective agent a better chance to take hold, but that's clutching at straws in a normally healthy person with one brief episode of discomfort.

The only thing that might be cause for complaint is that 2 hours before the end of the school day they did not change back into their dry uniforms. But if her hair was still soaking wet, then that must mean a second time she went out in the wet as even thick hair would not be sopping after that amount of time.

Quite valid concern, I think I'd have a gentle moan, too.
Ideal if you can find some other parents who perceive same problem.

I presume the weather changed after lesson started so teacher didn't want to disrupt by letting everyone run off & change?

Is it regulation? Ours is optional, might be worth making sure of what's said on the uniform list?

I don't get this idea of wearing a PE jumper for games! Surely we buy outdoor & indoor kit for a reason? I wouldn't have expected her to have to wear her PE jumper for games. Her PE jumper would then have been dry for after school sports inside!

We used to beg to be allowed to wear jumpers, but very rarely were allowed to! The dds have a reversible one for ease of team identification I think. No joggers though - they're on the list as optional but dd1 said don't bother for dd2 because she'll never be allowed to wear them!

But saying that, yes it is daft that she has a regulation waterproof track suit that she says she wasn't allowed to wear! But before you complain to the school, make sure you are 100% sure that she didn't choose not to wear it and is not telling you the full story!

At ds's school they have to wear shorts even when there is snow on the ground!

Oh for goodness sake. Why can a teenager not make up their own mind about how cold it is and wear the kit they feel most approriate? Why are teachers allowed to dicate when you can put some trousers or a jumper on? As long as it's school-permitted kit (and I disagree with that too) then what's the problem?

God when I was at school we didn't even have tracksuits for pe, aertex shirt and net ball skirt only. Cross country would be done in these in rain and snow.

Youngsters these day don't know how easy they have it. A bit of rain isn't going to kill you!
