To be scared of getting a job in case I'm worse off?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 11:50

NC and prepared for a flaming.

I've been claiming JSA for over two years now and am on the Work Programme. I have no qualifications and all I could get (I think) is a minimum wage job. I have been lying about my attempts to get work because I think I am better off out of work.

At the moment I get full housing benefit plus council tax, free dental care/prescriptions (if I need them) and £71 a week to live on. My bills aren't covered obviously, but they're not huge, and I have lots of free time to indulge hobbies etc.. I don't feel the need to buy stuff very often as I'm not into fashion/beauty and I eat cheaply. I can afford to eat out once a week with a TasteCard. The only thing I miss is holidays abroad but I'm not sure I would be able to afford them if I got a job anyway.

If I got a full time minimum wage job, would I be worse off? Just thinking of travel expenses, student loan repayment and time lost - not sure if I would still get any council tax benefit?

Has anyone had experience of this? By the way, I'm childless and live alone.

Aww at Bichon frise. There is a bloke who lives near me who walks two of these things every day. The bloke is massive great big body builder type meathead. It looks very funny.

Look at this sweet little dog <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=phalene+puppy&num=10&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&biw=1111&bih=533&tbm=isch&tbnid=aniiXJ6-BxBQiM:&imgrefurl=www.youpet.com/phalene/&docid=r0CkLHIsNERMBM&imgurl=www.youpet.com/graphics/animals/phalene-dog.jpg&w=200&h=200&ei=32JcUKyyMoTB0QWptIDgBg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=390&sig=117811176043170969706&page=2&tbnh=145&tbnw=147&start=10&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:14,s:10,i:148&tx=56&ty=52" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">phalene

Are standard poodles the great big labrador sized ones?

converseconvert · 21/09/2012 13:53

Oh never realised was as high as that Erik.

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 13:54

standard poodles?

converseconvert · 21/09/2012 13:55

There's a miniature poodle in the next street from us. Quite a fiesty little thing.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 21/09/2012 13:56

I love Weimaraners - a neighbour just got one and they are so regal looking!

Have a look

Also like labradoodles and golden doodles apart from the ridiculous names

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 21/09/2012 13:57

Oh, and just in case this is real, OP, you asked way upthread who would benefit from your working.

Anyone who pays taxes, that's who.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 13:57

Weimeraners are my favourite dog - they are such a beautiful colour and so majestic looking.

I really like massive great danes and beagles as well <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=cute+beagle+puppies&num=10&hl=en&safe=active&biw=1111&bih=338&tbm=isch&tbnid=6y_S98gu5YUVcM:&imgrefurl=dogs-cats.wikia.com/wiki/Beagle&docid=Xuqz9its9UgyOM&imgurl=images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091227085208/dogs-cats/images/f/fc/Beagle_portrait.jpg&w=570&h=600&ei=K2RcUPXJDYLX0QX2lYF4&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=527&vpy=-5&dur=824&hovh=230&hovw=219&tx=124&ty=119&sig=117811176043170969706&page=1&tbnh=92&tbnw=87&start=0&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:0,i:108" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">LOOK AT HIS FACE

i have a beagle, she's hard work but totally worth it. poodle are fab though because they don't shed hair. however i'm afraid that i would be too tempted to dye them pink...

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 13:59

I understand about it being better to work; doctor refused me a letter for DLA saying that she has seen patients thrive if they manage to work. I did work - and then I couldn't again!

Has really no one else been through this?

This is such a wind-up thread. No one really has that kind of attitude do they?

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:00

arf at this thread turning into 'scared of getting a dog' Grin

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 14:00

I can work but not for long without cracking up. So I think I am better off pretending to look for work as I'm not entitled to anything other than JSA as it stands.

I THINK. Unless there are jobs where you're allowed to go weird once a month or so? :)

I grew up with a standard poodle and a cocker spaniel. I think both breeds are lovely.

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:02

aw Liz OP

maybe get a job as a dog-walker?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/09/2012 14:02

Has really no one else been through this?

No love, because we live in the real world, not your made up one.

Right, back to poodle talk..............

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:03

pweese by my fwend

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 14:03

The OU says there is funding available if on JSA.

So that must be better than scraping some of mw whilst not having the same amount of time to study?

mamhaf · 21/09/2012 14:03

Op, if you're not sure how to define 'loser', look at the relationships threads - lots of posts there from women who've been unfortunate enough to end up with one.

Characteristics include:
Relying on someone else to support them
Dropping out of education
Substance abuse (alcohol or drugs)
Basically, refusing to act as a grown-up in society.
Often dubbed a 'cocklodger' if male and expecting a woman to provide for them.

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:03

street dawg?

MrSunshine · 21/09/2012 14:04

its odd that you only mention the inability to work after everyone has told you to get a job. You'd think that would come before the "would I be worse off working" gubbins, which is a bit redundant if you claim you can't work anyway.
You're just wasting everyones time.

Lucky for you we all seem to have plenty to waste.

Vagaceratops · 21/09/2012 14:06

I thought that too MrSunshine

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:06

one for the wolefs

pointybird · 21/09/2012 14:07

I saw a TV prog once where they tested how intelligent different breeds of dog are by how quickly they remove a blanket from their heads. The poodle sat there for aaaaages

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 14:07

Hahaa unchartered that street dawg looks like Snoop Dogg Grin

I would love to get a dog but can't as I am at work all day. I would also love a beagle but have been told that they are bloody hard work.
