To be scared of getting a job in case I'm worse off?

NC and prepared for a flaming.

I've been claiming JSA for over two years now and am on the Work Programme. I have no qualifications and all I could get (I think) is a minimum wage job. I have been lying about my attempts to get work because I think I am better off out of work.

At the moment I get full housing benefit plus council tax, free dental care/prescriptions (if I need them) and £71 a week to live on. My bills aren't covered obviously, but they're not huge, and I have lots of free time to indulge hobbies etc.. I don't feel the need to buy stuff very often as I'm not into fashion/beauty and I eat cheaply. I can afford to eat out once a week with a TasteCard. The only thing I miss is holidays abroad but I'm not sure I would be able to afford them if I got a job anyway.

If I got a full time minimum wage job, would I be worse off? Just thinking of travel expenses, student loan repayment and time lost - not sure if I would still get any council tax benefit?

Has anyone had experience of this? By the way, I'm childless and live alone.

If pride and self-respect aren't really issues, why are you asking?

sideburnsalawiggins · 21/09/2012 12:14

If this isn't a wind up

You're better off out of work because no company is going to employ you with that attitude.

But I'm not wasting my life! I enjoy having somewhere to live, friendships, hobbies, my unpaid vocation (art) and the time to persue all of that.

I also (as a pp mentioned) had experience of claiming some work I did (decorating), only to be worse off because of it. It's not inspiring me to find (min wage) work full time.

I don't want to be employed by a company, unless that company is bettering the world.

I'm not bettering the world now, I know, but how would working for, eg, Wetherspoons better it?

Poor effort. Im also wondering how you have a student loan and no qualifications. What is it you students say? Epic fail?

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 12:17

go for it

why put in a decent day's graft for fuck all when there are so many others putting in their share for you to benefit from

If this is not a wind up then yabu to not work and to lie to the job centre.

Both me and my husband work full time shifts. We are nearing the end of 9 weeks of not having a single day off together. We can't eat out once a week as we can't afford it as we pay all our bills ourselves!!!

People like you make me sick.

And people like you give people on benefits who genuinely cant work or are genuinely looking for work a bad name.

My dad was on benefits for a little while when he came out of forces. He had a wife and 2 kids to support, but took a job that meant he was worse off as he wanted to work. You are also more likely to be successful getting a better job if you are already working.

Laquitar · 21/09/2012 12:18

What is the TasteCard?

akaemmafrost · 21/09/2012 12:19

You're single, no kinds. Why don't you study in the evenings or part time around a job to get qualified for a much better one?

Roseformeplease · 21/09/2012 12:20

This has to be a wind up? But, if not, GET A JOB. Why should I have to pay for your to indulge your hobbies and your childish idea of a job having to benefit the world?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:20

TasteCard? Google it.

I understand that I should work because other people work. But at the same time that doesn't make sense.

Will I be worse off in work or not? That is all I am asking.

akaemmafrost · 21/09/2012 12:21

Taste card is a discount card for restaurants. My ex had one through his work because he had to entertain clients FOR WORK! How have you got one OP?

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/09/2012 12:21

This doesn't add up.

My bil was made redundant last year. When he signed on, not only did the job centre expect him to provide proof that he was looking for a job, they also gave him a detailed breakdown of how much weekly income he would have if he took a job at various different wages - from part time at minimum wage upwards.

I find it odd that none of this applies to you.

akaemmafrost · 21/09/2012 12:21

He has one not had one

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:22

You shouldn't have to pay for me. But why should I have to do a job that doesn't benefit anyone (other than profiteers)?

OP posts:
SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/09/2012 12:22

Also, how did you get into university with no qualifications?

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 12:23

exactly, OP

why go to work at all

sit on your arse all day reaping the rewards of everyone elses labour

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:24

Anyone can get a tastecard.

I am asked for proof that I'm looking for work. I haven't been informed of the income particulars of various jobs though; that actually sounds useful.

Well hellooooo and good afternoon, daily fail journalist! How kind of you to drop by.

Purple2012 · 21/09/2012 12:24

Do you know what, you are just a troll winding people up. Or at least I hope you are and you dont actually think like that.

Going to run the risk of getting message deleted but just fuck off and go and do your hobbies paid for by the rest of us.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:24

I got into uni as a mature student. Didn't need qualifications.

cestlavielife · 21/09/2012 12:25

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:26

Can someone give me a good reason to work please? Other than 'because I do'.

Seriously.

OP posts:
SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/09/2012 12:26

Well, if you really were unemployed you would have been given that information when you first went to sign on.

Do try harder OP 1/10
