To ask anyone who can, to phone BBC Radio 5 Live NOW - they are debating Page 3

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 08:59

the BBC radio 5 phone in which is called Your Call is discussing getting rid of Page 3 any moment now - they are referencing the petition that has been linked to from the MN page 3 thread

it will be full of people saying it's harmless -

is anyone able to phone in to say the issue is about the normalisation of this sort of image, rather than the fact that you can find a lot stronger stuff elsewhere anyway so why focus on P.3? which is probably what they will be saying?? call 0800 909 693

Why don't you do it?

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:05

or if you just want to listen to the debate, BBC radio 5 is on 909 or 693 medium wave and digital channel 705 on Freeview, (TV)
and on digital radio

Isla I was waiting for that one -
I'm not comfortable phoning in, but others might be and might want to phone Smile

They discussed it on 3 different TV shows yesterday.

The general consensus was that they should get rid of it.

Something like 68% of viewers who voted on the Loose Women show.

Why can't you do it?

i tried to call but the number is incorrect :(
I am pro banning!

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:09

ps. Target audience for Loose Women is not the same as target for Radio 5.
I am not answering anyone else who tells me to phone in myself.
I thought people might like to know this is on now, and that people who are happy calling in to these sorts of things might like the opportunity to call. That is all.

WorraLiberty · 21/09/2012 09:15

What's the target audience for Radio 5?

moogster1a · 21/09/2012 09:24

always amazes me that there are so amny people who buy the scummy rag, yet alone try to justify why there are women providing wank material in a so called "family" paper that gets left lying around people's living rooms here anyone can see it.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, no, I don't think there's anything wrong with women's breats. the same as I don't think there's anything to be ashamed of to have a vagina, it's all about context and where they should be exposed.

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:26

i absolutely agree moogster

Talking about if a bloke in front of you is reading it on the bus where your child can see it " it's your choice to ask the man to please read a different page" That was from a woman!

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 09:34

i am going to try

really interesting the tonight programme last night on role models for young girls worth watching on catch up if you can

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:34

i know. Listening to this station gives you a real cross section of what people out there actually think. Which in this case is deeply worryiing!

OP posts:
PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:45

i will look for that on catch up, thanks Freud

I'm still listening to phone in - it goes on til 10am. Wondering if any of you above have got through! I admire your confidence, I would just stammer Blush

OP posts:
FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 09:48

i can not get through :(

PageThreePiffle · 21/09/2012 09:56

Freud hopefully that means the switchboard is jammed with people protesting against P3?! keep trying...
listen to this silly old man saying we are being prudish for wanting to get rid of it, and referring to an earlier caller as "shrieky" Hmm

just got a message about good wishes for northern run so sent text

yes he was very annoying

Startailoforangeandgold · 21/09/2012 10:50

For gods sake campaign against something important.

Moaning about page 3 and similar stuff just makes feminists look like miserable childish kill joys.

No man and many women are just going to turn off.

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 11:31

i do campaign for other issues. i work within domestic violence

i feel this is an important issue as they sadly become a role model for many young women not something i personally feel is a good thing. i would rather woman are judged on what they achieve not what their boobs look like and would feel our society would not have such a problem with young women desperately wanting to look a certain way if we rid our media of so many articles and images that are based purely on what how women look. it?s a small part of a very big problem but it does contribute to it

in one week 9000 articles were written about female celebs, 90% of what was written was about what they looked like and their relationships. Some of these women have made huge achievements but that is not worth reporting apparently why when they look so good or bad

and i am really not worried how some people perceive feminists if they wish to be so narrow minded and follow the views of certain areas of the press then so be it. like the feminists before us now we can make changes and we will

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 11:36

i should have really said that these women were not all celebs, some were sports women, actresses and singers... but their achievements are not as important as how they look

notsofrownieface · 21/09/2012 11:48

Yes because all these women on page three have a gun to their head, and the only thing that will save them is a picture of their boobs.

What pisses me off the most is the people talking on my behalf as a woman. I couldn't give two shiny shits if Lisa aged 23 from Liverpool wants to flash her boobs on page three.

As if these women are the only women that are role models for young girls and I believe that parents have a duty here to educate their children.

Also on the role model front, Katie Price (I'm no fan however) was a page three girl and is now a business woman with a fortune of nearly £45 Million, she also balances a career and motherhood if that does not class her as a role model then I would like to know the criteria that does.

moogster1a · 21/09/2012 11:50

I wouldn't describe myself as a feminist.
I just don't like scenarios such as my fil looking at a pair of tits whilst I'm sat at the breakfast table with him. Especially when I'm breastfeeding every 10 mins. and wondering if that means he's getting his rocks off

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 21/09/2012 12:05

she has made her money on how she looks she looks like a human babie doll is that really someone you would want your daughter to look up too when there are other business women who have also managed to make their money through using their brains and hard work. children are bombarded with images now we can only protect them so much

NigellasGuest · 21/09/2012 12:31

people are missing the point a bit - the whole issue is that by having p3 in a mainstream newspaper, the implication is that it is ok to see women represented in this way. Of course the P3 girl did not have a gun held to her head, whoin their right mind thinks that?! That is not the point.
