"gentle" and "a chatterbox" respectively to describe the two women police officers who were murdered on duty yesterday.

Can you imagine those words ever being used to describe a man?

And this matters because everyday sexism like this continually makes it clear that women are thought to be inferior to men.

Good Lord.
Do you really, really think that anyone believed that 2 big strapping unarmed male police officers are more likely to resit a gun and grenade attack?

Do you really, really think that anyone believes that this makes women thought to be inferior to men?

Bad timing, coupled with extreme insensitivity.
Sure folk can hold whatever views they like. But expect to be ragged on for them, if you upset others.

Sallyingforth · 19/09/2012 16:04

I just wonder what the two young PC's would say if they could read this thread?

pigletmania · 19/09/2012 16:06

Here here squeaky, I'm 35 and would rather be known as a nice girl than old hag, madam

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 19/09/2012 16:08

I'm 34 and would bloody hate to be referred to as a girl.

I hope you're ok, seeker. The gleeful kicking you are getting on this thread is much worse than any percieved slight on your part.

tittytittyhanghang · 19/09/2012 16:10

Because a woman in her 30's is not a young girl. She is an adult woman.

speak for yourself, i am and will always be a young girl, even when im 101.

Also seeker YABVVVVVU.

pigletmania · 19/09/2012 16:11

Well that's fine chicken but we are not you ad seeker

Horsemad · 19/09/2012 16:12

I'm more annoyed that a newspaper felt it relevant to report that one of the women was planning a civil ceremony with her female partner.

Why is it relevant what sex her partner is?

cakeismysaviour · 19/09/2012 16:13

Get a grip.

TapirBackRider · 19/09/2012 16:13

Perceived slight? Oh there is no perceived or implied about it.

The OP has decided that she is offended that the colleagues and family of the murdered officers are being sexist by describing them thus. That is what is wrong.

As I said before - if people think the comments are wrong, make a complaint to the CC of GMP.

Moominsarescary · 19/09/2012 16:14

Me too titty

thebestisyettocome · 19/09/2012 16:16

Maybe the press reported she had a female partner because it's true. They also reported she'd been designing her wedding invitations that morning. It's unspeakably sad. Her poor, poor partner. She must be in pieces Sad

"EatsBrainsAndLeaves Wed 19-Sep-12 15:56:43

Only because everyday, there are indignant women who pick on the littlest detail, that has completely flown over or under the radar of most people - who are more bothered by what has actually happened than picking holes in the language used - and this, if anything is what gives Womens Rights the bashing it gets..

Where would you find a group of men in a huff because a man murdered in the line of duty was described as "one of the boys" or "a cheeky lad".. you just wouldnt.. they would be too busy debating the justice that should be meted out to the killer, not ranting because of a description.

ClippedPhoenix · 19/09/2012 16:16

I've only known small children being described as chatterboxes. Yes, he did describe them in a very "girly" way. Which I didn't think to be correct.

With you on this one Seeker.

TapirBackRider · 19/09/2012 16:17

Well said Squeaky.

GoldShip · 19/09/2012 16:18

I'm so glad that I'm that happy with my position in life, and that happy with being a woman without prejudice, that I wouldn't mind being called a young girl.

pigletmania · 19/09/2012 16:18

Here here squeaky just makes people like the op more and more petty and does nothing really than enforce feminist stereotypes

helenthemadex · 19/09/2012 16:20

YABU the families would have been consulted about what was going to be said and if they were happy with the descriptions that is all that matters

squeakytoy · 19/09/2012 16:20

"I'm more annoyed that a newspaper felt it relevant to report that one of the women was planning a civil ceremony with her female partner"

Why? I read that and didnt see anything spiteful or maliciously meant in what was a factual comment. It also said "The officer's partner has a daughter, a 'very talkative' five-year-old girl, and the couple were devoted to the youngster, sharing child care duties around their work shifts along with the help of grandparents"

When any tragedy occurs, the personal life of the people concerned gets reported.

Sadly a child has lost a stepmum too in all of this.

helenthemadex · 19/09/2012 16:22

well said squeaky

thebestisyettocome · 19/09/2012 16:22

That poor little girl Sad

Horsemad · 19/09/2012 16:23

squeaky it wasn't reported spitefully or maliciously, I just didn't see the relevance. Had she been planning a civil ceremony with a male partner, his sex would NOT have been mentioned, I am sure of that!

Sallyingforth · 19/09/2012 16:23

www.gmp.police.uk/mainsite/cond.htm

Thank you for the link Tapir. The tributes there are so very moving.

Coming back to this thread after reading them I can see even more clearly how unworthy it is of these fine young people who died so violently doing their duty. I'm out.

ClippedPhoenix · 19/09/2012 16:24

Seems to me that the down right nasty and rude people "indignant" ones on this thread are the ones that keep banging on at how well adjusted and comfortable they are in their feminine skin Grin

WorraLiberty · 19/09/2012 16:25

Horsemad are you suggesting they should have lied and said she was planning a civil marriage?

cakeismysaviour · 19/09/2012 16:28

Seems to be that the people who are being downright nasty and rude on this thread are those who see fit to criticise the tributes made by greiving loved ones and colleagues.
