to be a bit [shock] when Theo on dragons den said any thing over a DD bra

was not profitable because "it becomes a completely different bra" and costs would be too high.

Am I right in thinking he wouldn't invest in the woman's lingerie company for bigger breasted women because the bras cost too much to make when they get to an E cup?

The woman said that high street shops don't stock bra's above a DD and she wanted to specialise in bigger cup sizes. He just said that's because anything over a DD would need to be a completely different shape/mould and therefore companies find it too expensive.

AIBU to think with attitudes like this no wonder so many women are in the wrong size bras.

Yabu

He's a business man at the end of the day. He's there to make money.
And I he feels the profit margin isn't big enough that's his prerogative.

Doesn't he sell stationary anyway? Can't have much experience in bras can he?

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 09:50

But if he actually stocked the bras (even at a higher price) maybe women would buy them. Equal profit for him and women able to find the right size bra.

Well he knows his stuff because he owns/owned La Senza. He's there to make money after all.

flowery · 17/09/2012 09:51

Doesn't he own or use to own La Senza?

Presumably therefore he knows that larger bras are less profitable, therefore not shocking at all at he said so.

Annoying for those women who wear larger sizes, yes. But not shocking if based on actual financial information which it probably was.

pinkdelight · 17/09/2012 09:51

I think he also had La Senza too, didn't he?

But YABU, because there obviously are lots of bras out there over a size DD so Theo's small-titted niche profiteering is no excuse not to wear the right bra.

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 09:51

I do understand he's there to make money but he surely could still make money by charging more for them but at least make them available.

bumhead · 17/09/2012 09:52

He used to own La Senza. Doesn't he own Boux Avenue too?

flowery · 17/09/2012 09:52

X post Valium :)

CakeMeIAmYours · 17/09/2012 09:52

Interesting question, i'm not well up on bra manufacture, but it doesn't seem to be an unreasonable statement that bigger bras are more expensive to make. If they have to be sold at the same price as smaller bras, I can see that it would be less profitable to sell them.

What do you see as being the solution OP?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 17/09/2012 09:52

Never knew that valium

Maybe he does know what he's talking about then.

I'd have thought a larger bra would need more structure, stronger needlework(can't think of the word), stronger material etc. so it would cost more wouldn't it?

Not the same as a B cup little lacy number with a bit of underwire.

anditwasallyellow · 17/09/2012 09:53

Totally agree op, I'm over a dd and I'm hardly massive the amount of women I see wearing the wrong bra size. I was shocked I find it hard to believe that most women are under a dd it's really not that big.

CakeMeIAmYours · 17/09/2012 09:54

Didn't M&S recently lose this particular battle? They tried to charge more for larger bras and were met with outrage.

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 09:55

I am sure that is true Boysboysboys

But I have seen the same in places like M&S where the larger cups are not on the smaller backs readily available. Just wonder if this moght be part of the reason places try and sell people bigger backs rather than the larger cup they actually need?

My solution is that they should make the same profit margin on the larger bras and charge accordingly.

really Cake?

That's interesting not heard about that.

CakeMeIAmYours · 17/09/2012 09:57

Yeah, but if you ask me, it was a storm in a D cup Grin

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 09:58

I am an 32/34E...now that I have seen the light....but spent years in a 36C cup with too larger a back and so uncomfortable.

I am not that big and would pay loads for a good fitting bra.

OP posts:
flowery · 17/09/2012 10:01

yes M&S were met with outrage when they tried to charge more for larger bras.

I really don't see it as an 'attitude' problem on his part. He's a businessman talking profit margins.

Don't know what the solution is though!

Iteotwawki · 17/09/2012 10:02

Bravissimo - fabulous chain and online store for all larger bra sizes. Plus shaped clothing that doesn't gape at the bust. I couldn't believe my size when they fitted me (32-34 back, H cup), having been uncomfortable in a 40DD for years. Suspect it's a niche market though which is why Theo / others wouldn't invest.

BrandyAlexander · 17/09/2012 10:05

Well that explains why you can never find smaller back bigger cup sizes on the high street. I am 28E and do inevitably paying more for my bras. However, it is an unusual size (apparently) so if you stock those sizes on the shop floor their turnover will be low so they end up taking room. Not great for me as a potential customer but if I was running the business/a shareholder it would be hard to argue against his logic.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 10:06

Right now I havent got the first notion what size bra I am. I suspect its somewhere around the EE cup though.

It is impossible to find good quality bras. I would pay more for a bigger bra if they lasted.

Evans seem to be the best around atm. They are way out of my price range for clothes (£40 a top? Thats the weeks grocery shop ffs) but the bras are ok pricewise.

It would be nice to see more choice though across the retailers.

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 10:07

I am not so sure it is niche.

I know so many people over 30 who have recently changed their bra size to over a DD after years of wearing the wrong size.

OP posts:
pinkdelight · 17/09/2012 10:08

They were the same ages ago with some woman who wanted to sell shoes. Just didn't add up financially, cos of the stock you'd have to carry, all those different sizes, as novice says, taking up space. But second the props for Bravissimo. Mad how they can tell your size at a glance with no tape measure!

WhatYouLookingAt · 17/09/2012 10:08

If M&S can't charge more for larger bras, they will make crappier larger bras. Your man is right, it is a completely different product, they have to be made differently to little ones, they do a totally different job.

It's like the difference between a pop up tent and a marquee, good luck if you don't want to spring for the extra, how are you going to fit 50 people in a 2 man tent?

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 10:10

but that's it isn't it, Bravissimo are profitable aren't they?
