was not profitable because "it becomes a completely different bra" and costs would be too high.

Am I right in thinking he wouldn't invest in the woman's lingerie company for bigger breasted women because the bras cost too much to make when they get to an E cup?

The woman said that high street shops don't stock bra's above a DD and she wanted to specialise in bigger cup sizes. He just said that's because anything over a DD would need to be a completely different shape/mould and therefore companies find it too expensive.

AIBU to think with attitudes like this no wonder so many women are in the wrong size bras.

The companies recommended here suchas Bravisimo, Brastop.com, and Figleaves - in my experience these are great for bigger cup sizes but not bigger overall sizes generally - I am a 46FF and really struggle, I have a Simply Be catatalogue and can get a few pretty ones there and thats about it. Yes I could be doing with losing weight but what do I do in the meantime - let them hang free? Hmm

In Cakemes defence, the lack of reasonably priced, pretty bras of my size (34ff/g) on my high street was the a major driver in me losing over 2+ stone.

However I now probably need a 30DD/E and they are not on my high street either Confused

Pendeen · 17/09/2012 15:30

I think some most bras for those of us above a DD are created up by moonlighting boat designers - all lace saucers and yacht rigging!

I think I am a 34E, but even when I follow measuring guides to the letter, a 'best' fit is often more to do with the make than the actual number on the label.

As regards the OP - no I don't think he was being unfair as he is simply a businessman

"I do understand that there are a myriad of complex reasons behind obesity and it's not as simple as 'just eat less' but the fact remains that if women maintain a BMI of under 25, they will be a lot less likely to need bras over a DD cup."

cake, I have a BMI of 21-22 normally. I'm currently in a 30F bra, although I have made it to 30GG when BFing.

JamieandTheMagicTorch · 17/09/2012 15:49

I was soo thrilled when it turned out I'd been wearing the wrong size for years. Moved right on up to a B

StealthPolarBear · 17/09/2012 15:55

"One of the criteria for breast reduction surgery in our area is that you have to lose 3 stone and have no reduction in breast size"

What if you don't have 3 stone to lose???

Hasn't La Senza gone out of business?

NickECave · 17/09/2012 16:20

La Senza did indeed go out of business. I unfortunately got given some gift vouchers shortly before they went bust. Tried all their larger bras and they were hideously uncomfortable and unsupportive as well as plain hideous. I asked if I could have the vouchers refunded as the shop was clearly unable to accommodate my 30FFs but their customer service was thoroughly crap as well. Not surprised they went bust.

TheHeirOfSlytherin · 17/09/2012 16:27

I am a 28F. Somehow I don't think losing weight would help me find a bra (or swimming costume/bikini) that doesn't cost a fortune compared to when I was wearing badly fitting 34DD bras from the supermarkets because I had never been measured.

CassandraApprentice · 17/09/2012 16:57

StealthPolarBear - no idea suspect it depends on the consultant.

I don't actually know anyone with large boobs with no extra weight who wants a breast reduction in my local area whose spoken to the local hospital consultants yet.

Ciske · 17/09/2012 17:11

Ah ok, so we're looking at the advice of a man whose lingerie business went bust? Maybe alienating a large section of the market wasn't such a good idea after all then? Hmm

delightfullyfragrant · 17/09/2012 17:53

according to google he sold to private equity and then it went into administration due to "poor trading conditions". Not sure of the time elapse between selling and it going under or even whether it was a private equity cash flow problem or what? Interesting nevertheless.

I can well believe that there are lots of women out there who have a DD cup but are wearing the wrong size bra. Despite having been measured loads of times, I have recently had the astounding revelation that I am actually a 32C and not a 34B after reading a thread on here that said most women are wearing bras with a too-large band and too-small cup. It's amazing. And suddenly nearly every bra I try on actually fits pretty well.

Here's the thing though - firstly I was actually repeatedly measured as a 34B and secondly I would never have thought of myself as a C cup. My breasts are really pretty small and certainly don't fit my preconceived idea of a C cup - in fact I wouldn't have been surprised if someone had told me I was an A. I've even tried on a couple of 30D bras that fit. So there must be loads of "normal" busted women out there a bit bigger than me (not hard, I see loads every day!) who could easily be in a DD or bigger.

StormGlass · 17/09/2012 22:38

I'd agree with that, LiegeAndLief.

A colleague of mine went to a bra shop a few weeks ago - she thought that she was a B cup, but hadn't had a bra sizing since she was 16 (about 20 years ago). Turned out she was actually a DD. But, looking at her, her breasts don't look particularly big to me.

WitchityBroom · 18/09/2012 09:40

I realise that this is just one more individual experience, but I need to challenge the assumption that cup size is linked to obesity, even if just anecdotally.

I'm 5'9, size 12, bra size 34H. Even at my slimmest, aged 20 when I was a size 8, I was a 32E. My boobs just don't seem to stop growing, even though my weight hasn't changed in the past ten years or so.

I suspect that if I could manage to get down to a size 8 again then maybe I'd go down a cup or two, but I'd still have disproportionately large boobs.

Kayano · 18/09/2012 09:45

I was a 32 G before dd - the onount of time someone did a G cup only I find they started at a 34 or 36 back was sooo annoying!

lustybusty · 18/09/2012 20:47

Sorry, long-time lurker, had to join up to put in my 2p.... I used to be a size 20-22. bra size 36JJ-K. Lost weight (not weighing myself, so no idea how much I lost) and am now a size 14-16. Bra size now? 36HH-J. (Measured 6-monthly by Bravissimo). I LONG to be a GG, so I can buy high street bras from M&S/Debenhams etc!!
FWIW to the poster above (I forget who sorry) I was amazed after my first bravissimo fitting, going from a 38D to a 34G (aged about 17). I stood up straight, I looked like I'd lost weight and I couldn't keep the grin off my face!!
I also struggle with the quality of Bravissimo bras, I find a lot of them disintegrate. However, I find Freya and Panache almost ALWAYS have the wires too far up in the underarm for me, so have NO other choice in pretty not inch thick strapped bras!!
