to think that Aldi/Lidl are not that much cheaper than Sainsbury's/Tesco's etc?

I recently went to my nearest Lidl and Aldi on a shopping trip with the hope of picking up some bargains as I had heard they were so much cheaper than the mainstream supermarkets.

I was a bit surprised to see that the stuff they have is quite random and I didn't find it much cheaper than the other supermarkets. Perhaps a few pence but nothing to write home about and some of it was definitely the same price. Sure, things like Lidl's nappies are cheaper but I just waited a few days until Sainsbury's/Tesco's have an offer on and got a load of Huggies nappies cheaper than Lidl's. Perhaps it's just a case of not buying expensive brands (except when they are on offer) and looking for offers/bargains at the big supermarkets?

Yabu. I save a fortune by shopping at Aldi.

I am starting to wonder ophelia. I now go to any supermarket and buy stuff on offer, it means we hardly never have the same meal twice and we try different stuff.

Fruit and Veg we get from Morrisons because I like their range and I get meat from Aldi.

I think genuine bargains are a bit few and far between now.

YABU. I save £20/30 per week by shopping at Aldi compared to Tesco.

It depends on what you are shipping for. If its staples like mince, chicken, etc then Aldi is great. They only have one choice bit the quality is usually excellent. I don't tend to buy fresh veg from there as the shelf life is often quite short but otherwise it definitely saves us pennies.

YANBU - I don't find either of them massively cheaper than Asda, and they have less choice.

I find some stuff a lot cheaper in Aldi but the fruit and veg is very poor quality & I hate there cereal and bread :/
Things like cheese, ham, crisps and juices are cheap and seem nice quality

Well, our shopping bill has been cut by a third since we started getting most of our stuff at Lidl. Examples of bargains - really good quality Olive Oil £2.25 for 750ml, 500ml balsamic vinigar 99p, 10kg basmati rice £10, nappies are vastly cheaper even taking into account special offers (you also get more nappies in a pack), bread, beans, breakfast cereal, cheese oh, I could go on.

Anyway YABU.

I shop online at asda, each week they email me with a price comparison. Last week I saved £5 shopping at ASDA. AND because it wasn't ten percent cheaper than all the other supermarkets they gave me £2.80

This happens nearly every week :o

I live opposite Lidl so tend to shop there out of convenience. It is about half the price of my local Sainsburys which is the only other supermarket in walking distance

I fill my trolly at aldi and its usually about £30-£35 ... i fill my trolley at tesco its never under £60

I get my weekly shop for about £50 at Aldi, the equivalent at Asda is at least £75. I usually by Asda own brand too rather than big brands.

Most items are cheaper, those that are about the same price are of a better quality at Aldi.

I am curious to know what you bought OP because I really can't understand how it couldn't have been £££'s cheaper.

You must be doing something wrong! I spend under 50 a week in Aldi. Couldn't get it for under 70 in Tesco and shopping in Aldi takes fraction of the time!

I don't like lidl though.

I hae started to do a combination of Aldi and ASDA rather than ASDA and Sainsburys and I definitely spend less though some of this must be down to there being less choice. Their cooked meats/salami/pastrami type stuff is loads cheaper and I have found the fruit and veg just fine for a really good price.

Morrison's is the cheapest by far for me. I can't find anything I like in lidl and I have tried really hard but a full Morrison's shop for me is about £70 and the same in tesco's is well over £100

Never shopped in Lidl.. But I do most of the family shop in Aldi, and you do have to be a bit careful as some things are cheaper in Home Bargains (and for branded rather than own brand stuff) and some stuff is the same price in Morrisson's or cheaper in there due to offers. I am a fairly avid bargain-hunter so I go to all 3 places and compare . But generally, a full shop in Aldi is always going to be cheaper if you are fixed to a list about what you buy - if you shop elsewhere, you need to be flexible and buy whatever is on offer, in which case you can get a bargain trolley but it might not necessarily be filled with what you wanted...

They are much cheaper. The pack sizes are often bigger and the quality better than equivalent products in the supermarket too. For example a tin of tuna is 69p in Lidl. The cheapest (non basics) one is £89p in sainsburys but the Lidl version is Tuna steak and the Sainsburys tuna chunks. Much better quality at a lower price.

Their wine is amazing too - no bottle over £4 and tastes fantastic

YABU. I shop m lastly at Aldi now with the odd top up from Sainburys and the amount of items that are £1+ cheaper in Aldi for often a superior product is phenomenal.

I buy continental meats from Aldi/Lidl as these are loads cheaper than at the mainstream supermarkets.

ASDA is very cheap. I shop the offers. And if you do online shopping it's very easy to just get the reduced stuff

I don't live near an Aldi though and I hate the local lidl

YABU. Also, I find the quality of Aldi food is much better than something in the equivalent price bracket at Tesco or Sainsbury's.

I think 'shop the offers' is the way ahead Kayano. My local supermarket is Morrisons and I don't want to be driving anywhere else really. If I happen to go past Sainsburys/Tesco I will go on and see what's on offer.

Sparkling Cat will only eat Felix cat food and I have to track down where it's on offer. It always is somewhere.

I've shopped at Aldi for the last few weeks and it has definitely been cheaper than my usual Asda shop.
I don't know if that's because the products are cheaper or because there's a limited choice so I don't pick up loads of extras.
Either way, if it means I spend less money, it's all good.
