People who say WE are pregnant.

This really annoys me & smacks of smugness. Your husband cannot be pregnant along with you! Why not say I am pregnant?

I can sort of see the we're breastfeeding, tbh.

That is a joint parenting choice and it's what we as a family chose to do. DH did say we're breastfeeding because his mum tried the whole "when's FG going to stop BF doing that so that we can have a turn feeding LittleFG?" and he told her "She's not stopping, we're breastfeeding her".

That is very different to pregnancy, which is a biological state.

I can't stand it either OP!

YANBU, it bugs me too. "We are expecting a baby" is fine and factually correct but "we are pregnant" just makes me cringe. I'm in a bad mood so I will also add that all the men have to do is ejaculate, then sit back for the next 9 months while the woman does all the work, then they can feel very pleased with themselves when the baby arrives (and they can show the world how virile they are, and how they are "real men") before deciding whether they can be arsed to take an active and responsible role in the upbringing of said baby. I agree that it seems very American, a way of making people feel involved, but let's face it all men have to do is fuck, it's not exactly rocket science. I really do think that most of their broodiness revolves around their egos anyway, and the walking a baby in a pram is less to do with being helpful and more to do with them showing off what super genitals they have that have produced a child. Phew, that felt surprisingly good to get that cynicism out!

Just to be contrary, it is only true to say that only females can be pregnant if you take a single definition of the word. A pause can be pregnant, but it isn't female.

If you take the following as a definition:

" Of great or potentially great import, implication, or moment: "It was a politically pregnant time in Poland" (New York)."

then as far as the couple's relationship is concerned it has reached a moment of great import. Using "we" as a signifier for their relationship as a whole they could therefore legitimately say that as a couple they were pregnant.

So there!

Argh! Yes it's puke-worthy. YANBU

"We are pushing a baby out of our vagina"

"We are worried about having a shit whilst pushing a baby out of our vagina"

How do those sound? They'd make excellent Facebook updates...

Nice try bluegrass.

Bluegrass · 17/09/2012 12:41

Thank you, I was quite pleased with that.

FoofyShmooffer · 17/09/2012 12:42

YABU

It's a bit wanky but let them have their joy. Roll your eyes and move along.

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 17/09/2012 12:49

Yanbu. Not at all!

I know someone who announced "We're crawling/walking!" when their DC started crawling/walking. Err no love, your child is crawling, not all of you Confused

gabbymum · 17/09/2012 18:43

I agree OP, it is a ridiculous thing to say so YANBU
