to admit to liking porn

I did recently, in a pub I frequent, and was met with derision by most of the female patrons.

There were a number of red(dish) faces, when I said I like my porn written, as the pictures were better, and no-one was exploited.

There were more red faces when I asked if any of them had heard of 50 shades of Grey?

[Incidentally, I worry about kids brought up on modern visual porn from the limited exposure I have had to it [the odd stag do and the like]; the women don't look like women; I've never heard any women say the things they do; and all the men are - I presume - unfeasibly large and endowed with superhuman endurance, and an antipathy to condoms and limited ideas of how to experience orgasm]

I don't see why a subjective argument is invalid. Surely that is, in itself, a subjective position, therefore invalid?

MySpanielHell · 13/09/2012 10:05

Are you saying that your main exposure to written sexual material is primarily through slash?

Alurkatsoftplay · 13/09/2012 10:16

I've written a blogpost on this very subject!

Sorry, as you were...

OneMoreChap · 13/09/2012 11:13

no,no,no... my main exposure to written porn was Masquerade Books, then asstr, then Literotica and so on.

My exposure to fanfic was largely slash which doesn't really rock my boat. [I bumped into it chasing some Whedon rumours]

Alurkatsoftplay · 13/09/2012 12:25

But onemorechap, it's already been explained, if it's written it's erotica, if it's visual it's porn. Why do people find that so difficult?

Bangs head against wall.

Dahlen · 13/09/2012 13:30

I think more people should have discussions just like this. Grin

If they did, perhaps the problems in the porn industry would be more widely understood and condemned, while at the same time people's sexual hangups would lessen.

FWIW, I am anti-porn in the sense that IMO the industry is rife with exploitation and abuse. However, I don't think there's anything at all unnatural or wrong about being turned on by watching/reading about other people having sex. I think the two are separate but that commercial porn conflates them. I hope I'm never put in this situation Wink but I'd have far less problem coping with someone who told me they were into dogging than I would with someone who told me they got off on watching young women being effectively raped on camera.

slowestwildebeast · 13/09/2012 13:59

Visual porn is of course different to bloody written porn, you're watching real people having sex.

God who sits about rambling on about 50 shades of grey and porn in the pub? There are a million topics. Yack, how old are you?

loopylou6 · 13/09/2012 14:00

Do men really watch porn together? Do you all compare your erections, or lie on your bellies to conceal them like an adolescent? Hmm

slowestwildebeast · 13/09/2012 14:01

Yuck, you're 50+ how old was the barmaid, imagine if she's young, listening to some old bloke rambling about porn?

ClippedPhoenix · 13/09/2012 14:17

creep. Eww yuck.

20s.
OW there 40s to 50s.
Barmaid's dad - licensee, 50s.

All of them there I know well.

I note your "Yuck" and respond with Hmm. Are you making suggestions/

The barmaids dad! Mine would have escorted you out, but then my dad is probably around your age and doesn't feel the need to discuss 50 shades with 20 year olds!

OneMoreChap · 13/09/2012 15:08

Barmaid talked about 50SoG
I asked did she think it was porn, she didn't.

As I said; I know these people, have done for years, and most of them - including said barmaid - have been in and out of my house... and I theirs.

Not any more. :)

Bloody 50 shades. I can't even remember what you asked.

Good Lord!

This is supremely sad. [sadface]

OMC, if you wanted to discuss different formats of stimulating material, why didn't you say "do people think written porn is better/worse/more interesting etc than visual?"

Because that might have got you the discussion you wanted instead if the gleeful feeling of getting one up on your pub companions?

Looks carefully at OP.
Nope. Maybe some amusement.
Banter-ish perhaps.

TBH, how friends talk amongst themselves is pretty much of concern to them..
Story told here to contrast representation of women in fashion mags/women in porn/user of porn-smut-erotica amongst genders.

Another one here not getting the men watching porn together. Don't people usually watch porn in order to have a wank? Or on a stag do is it a bravado 'wahey the lads' thing?

AnyFucker · 14/09/2012 16:49

The title of your thread was the most off putting

"AIBU to admit to liking porn"

and then you start talking about something else, which is what prompted my "what is this thread about" first response

perhaps you would be better to simply state what you mean in straightforward terms ?

although I accept that what you wanted your thread to definitely not be about is your social skills (or lack, thereof)

OP - Can you respond to the questions about how joint porn watching works please. Genuinely curious.

OneMoreChap · 15/09/2012 18:30

Numberlock why did a bloke - older - than me decide it was a good idea to put some pneumatic porn film on? [oh, for those interested, during 'action' the men appeared to wear cut off johnnies, though the finale was elsewhere...]

No idea whatsoever. I'd rather have watched some Southern Hemisphere tests, so we could have argued about how Home Nations forward play hasn't kept up with the modern game, while drinking his extraordinarily wide range of malts.

TBH, having been fascinated by porn in the late 60s, early 70s, until I saw real females :-) the modern stuff seems ... unerotic, uninteresting and generally unreal.

I think written stuff has better pictures. Rather like the wireless, but then I'm possibly a dying breed.

I watched some porn today. In an old penny arcade there was a 'What the Butler saw' machine. The lady kept fairly respectably dressed the whole time. There was also a machine for displaying naughty postcards. I saw ankles and everything!
