to admit to liking porn

I did recently, in a pub I frequent, and was met with derision by most of the female patrons.

There were a number of red(dish) faces, when I said I like my porn written, as the pictures were better, and no-one was exploited.

There were more red faces when I asked if any of them had heard of 50 shades of Grey?

[Incidentally, I worry about kids brought up on modern visual porn from the limited exposure I have had to it [the odd stag do and the like]; the women don't look like women; I've never heard any women say the things they do; and all the men are - I presume - unfeasibly large and endowed with superhuman endurance, and an antipathy to condoms and limited ideas of how to experience orgasm]

Ooooh SGB will keep fingers crossed for publishers meeting, have got my eye on that anthology you recommended a while ago Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 16:47

Oh, sorry, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to stray out of FWR. Wink

I do think there is a difference between talking about 50 shades, and talking about your porn tastes in general. It comes across as creepy to announce you love porn, surely? A bit eww.

And asking people if they use porn is, yep, definitely something not for a public space. Why would you do that?!

I don't think it's massively offensive, just, well, a bit disgusting. Were you a bit pissed maybe?

What's the article in question? Confused

AnyFucker · 12/09/2012 16:49

Personally, in the pub, I would have edged away and labelled you as "fuckwit that talks shit when he's had a few" Smile

Don't get this post at all.

What is it today?

No idea what it is today, but I can tell you why I posted it.

I read and posted here about how much I hate the fashion industry, and thought about how women can avoid most visual porn. I suspected some might do so for the same reasons I do. and posted to AIBU.

Pointed to 50SoG as a hook for discussion; got a nice SGB on erotica vs. porn, a brownie point and a Hmm or two.

OP posts:
LostinaPaperCup · 12/09/2012 16:50

Maybe they went red because they thought you asking them about what porn they like is a bit creepy?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 16:51

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I mean, AF.

I'm not keen on people who do that - I live just down the road from a pub and the landlord is very good at asking people to leave if they start doing that thing of addressing the crowd and getting people uncomfortable. Good for him; less fun for us in that often you get pissed, and now rather angry, people wandering up and down the street.

I think it's that you probably think it's a bit funny and daring when you're tipsy, but in reality I'm not sure it comes across like that.

Wander where you will! I tend to pick up some stuff in Active threads and find myself in places I didn't expect Smile

Interested in who thought written was porn...

Nah. Was later when we attempted to beat the quiz machine.

What's the article in question?

50 Shades of Grey?

I think they know that already...
... and suspect most of them also tswthhaf

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 16:59

Mmm. Why not ask if people thought writing could be porn, then? I mean, making it personal is creepy, surely?

The 'article' ... gosh ... erm, it's more like a tidal wave of people taking the piss out of that pile of crap, to be honest. If you just googled it I'm sure you'd find more than you can shake a stick at. There are tons of articles. Most of the papers seem to have had one or two at least.

What was it specifically you wanted to know? (I'm getting a bit lost with all the italics, my eyes are a bit off).

OneMoreChap · 12/09/2012 17:03

LRD I understood it was exploitative tosh with violence against women being sexualised. Not really my cup of tea. [or glass of malt]

AnyFucker · 12/09/2012 17:04

At least you can admit to being.g the fuckwit that talks shit in the pub. There are a hell of a lot of them out there with no self awareness at all Smile

OneMoreChap · 12/09/2012 17:08

AnyFucker would that it were confined to the pub.

I posted here, as I know AIBU will normally get a reaction... I was let's say. a tad irritated about the fashion mag stuff and didn't feel up to a rant in FWR, as I possibly have over done my presence there recently.

I'd said most women can avoid porn, then thought about whether they do or not... hence the over-sharing. As I suspect, a lot of it is down to what do people think porn is.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 17:08

So, what's the issue? Confused

It may offend you that people buy into 50 shades, but I don't think it excuses what you did, which obviously made them quite uncomfortable. I do honestly think you were out of line really. I can just imagine how I'd feel if my nice night out was interrupted by someone who decides to spark off a chat with 'do you like porn?'

Just thinking about it ... if you were in the blokes' toilet and some great beefy chap leaned over and muttered 'so how do you feel about anal?' ... would you not find it a little odd? It might be funny but it'd also be embarrassing, I think.

Depends where it was.
"pitching or catching" would have been my response on Canal Street.
Many many years ago I accidentally tried to pick someone up in Napoleons...

The people in the pub are people I know well; visit each other's house type well. Know each others partners, well. DW said - when I told her - "well at least you're not reading that shit."

Roundabout way of asking about porn use/definitions; which it has achieved Smile

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 17:14

Ah, ok, I thought from your OP you were talking about people who just happened to be in the pub. It is a bit different if they're your mates as well.

Still, I don't think it's that surprising they were blushing, TBH.

Grin at the Canal Street ref.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2012 17:14

Oh, cross posted.

I see.

You make me laugh onemore.

Oh - and just to add something other than that - i like visual porn.

thebeesnees79 · 12/09/2012 17:27

written porn fine as in novels but like you said the guff on the net is disgusting. it gives a warped perception of what is normal!
I read an article (will try & find it) that said porn stars suffer injuries such as anal tearing, osephagus tears, syphilis in the eye! The list of disgusting illnesses and injury is a grim read & some people because of porn think its normal sex.

AnyFucker · 12/09/2012 18:09

I love canal st for the people-watching opportunities (and not being pestered by men who think you fancy them because you have a vagina)

LucieMay · 12/09/2012 19:31

I find porn entertaining and I also like looking at some fairly dodgy stuff (nothing illegal). Guess I'm a traitor to woman kind!

2girls2dogs · 12/09/2012 19:35

how do you know its legal Lucie?

Oddly enough, that was never why I was pestered Smile

Lucie, you may not be a traitor to womankind bit I imagine you are spectacularly ignorant

MySpanielHell · 12/09/2012 21:04

I don't understand the conversation you had or why people's faces only got read when you mentioned written porn. Can you explain?

Most people call videos, photos etc of people having sex porn and call writing about sex erotica. So I would expect people to be confused, or to think you were confused and be embarrassed for you.

I don't think I'd talk in a pub about what types of erotica I read though, at least not to all and sundry.
