just been reading that the Taliban have issued a commitment to kill Prince Harry;

This re-affirms my long-standing view that MotRF shouldnt be serving; surely they just create a massive security headache for all involved. And, also put the people serving with them at additional risk?

Thats what I think. AIBU?

Yabu

There will always be 'targets'

Sirzy · 10/09/2012 11:21

It shouldn't be made public where they are but I have no issue with them being in the armed forces.

If they didn't work people would call them lazy, they do work and people complain!

BigBoobiedBertha · 10/09/2012 11:22

Isn't he serving away from the front line in relative safety working with the Apache helicopters?

Do you not think that the MoD haven't analysed the security implications of him being there? I doubt they would send him out there just because he wanted to go and certainly he isn't being sent back to the same situation and role he was in before which they did find to be dangerous once the cat was out of the bag and everybody found out he had been there.

I think you are probably being unreasonable although I can't say for certain. I suspect there is an awful lot we don't know, with good reason, so we probably aren't in a position to judge.

imonthefone · 10/09/2012 11:24

Im sure they have analysed the security implications. Im sure it was a fucking nightmare

Wouldnt you feel nervous if your sons or daughters were serving with him?

He is such an obvious and prized target

he could always work a different job-Asda?

Sirzy · 10/09/2012 11:27

imonthefone · 10/09/2012 11:29

wouldnt you be more worried? I would

YABU. British royalty have a very long history of serving in the forces. Not allowing them to serve because of the possibility of death due to terrorist activity means that the terrorists have gained and we have lost yet another tiny bit of freedom to them.

I doubt very much that the security analysis was a nightmare. It is the job of the armed forces to assess risk in high risk situations. And if my DD was serving with him I would be quite happy as I would imagine he is one of the least likely people to come to harm.

And - if PH was kidnapped, would Britain maintain its non-negotiation policy?

OP posts:
imonthefone · 10/09/2012 11:31

why would he be least likely to come to harm call?

because he has extra resources deployed to protect him?

YABU, I think its a good thing for the RF to be in the military, it shows the esteeem in which the military are held, they are serving the country.

Whilst the army / RAF will have assessed the risks and no Apache has yet been hit by the Taliban, Apaches are a prize target no matter who is flying them, although I'm sure they are a bigger prize. He is still in a dangerous role, consider Afgan army shootings of foreign soldiers.

fishybits · 10/09/2012 11:33

I'm pretty certain that the MOD have more experience than you in threat assessment and that Captain Wales's considerable talent will be used to save numerous lives in theatre.

midori1999 · 10/09/2012 11:33

The Taliban are full of shit. Yes, there's a risk, there's a risk to everyone. The Taliban will neither know exactly where Harry is or have the capability to kill him unless it's 'accidental' IMO. Very few British helicopters have been shot down by the Taliban, they generally do not have the capabilities.

If Harry is in Bastion, it is huge like a city and it's very safe compared to other places British forces are serving.

twoGoldfingerstoGideon · 10/09/2012 11:34

Actually, on second thoughts, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would be entirely in favour of the poor being stigmatised...

iseenodust · 10/09/2012 11:34

YABU agree with Callisto

AAAAAAAAARGH Wrong thread

cantspel · 10/09/2012 11:37

All our forces personnel are at risk in Afghanistan and i dont see how the risk increases just because ph is there.
The taliban will kill any of our troops given the chance.
None of them should be there. Every death is a complete waste, nothing is going to change and when we do pull out things will be going back to how they have always been.

Actually no I wouldn't be that worried if my DSs were serving with him. I would have thought it was one of the safest places to be, serving next to the Queen's grandson. This is more because he is probablyb being kept out of real trouble not because he gets extra security (not forgetting he always has security wherever he goes, regardless of whether he is serving in the military or not)

The Taliban do nothing but threaten to kill people - there is nothing new there.

And it is daft to suggest he goes and works in Asda or similar - if he is going to work anywhere, the military with its built in security is the best place for the Royals.

fishybits · 10/09/2012 11:39

He's a co-pilot/gunner a very very good one so is called up to protect our troops when they are under attack by the Taliban.
